Chondroectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

Chondroectodermal Dysplasia is a disease complex consisting of bilateral manual polydactyly, chondrodysplasia of long bones resulting in acromelic dwarfism, hydroitic ectodermal dysplasia affecting principally the nails, teeth and hair and congenital heart malformations. It is necessary to identify this disease at its early stage in order to render prompt treatment. The oral manifestations are characteristic for this particular disease so that a dental surgeon can identify this condition and refer the case to a cardiologist and orthopedician for corrective surgeries. In this article, a case of

Ellis-van Creveld Syndrome: a report of two cases.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EVC) or chondroectodermal dysplasia, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is a tetrad of chondrodysplasia, ectodermal dysplasia, polydactyly, and congenital heart disease, of which chondrodystrophy of the tubular bones is the most common feature, while central nervous system (CNS) and urinary tract anomalies are some of its rarer associations. This report describes EVC syndrome in two sisters of Indian origin, ages 8 and 6 years, the products of nonrelated, unaffected parents. The patients had chondrodysplasia of tubular bones resulting in disproportionate dwarfism,

Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of ellis-van creveld syndrome.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (chondroectodermal dysplasia) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a narrow thorax with short ribs, short extremities with polydactyly, and heart defects. A woman underwent sonographic examination at 27 weeks' menstrual age to rule out anomalies because of premature labor. Sonography revealed a live fetus with short long bones, polydactyly in the hands and feet, a narrow thorax with short ribs, and an atrial septal defect. All bony structures were of normal hyperechogenicity. The placenta appeared normal and was located at the posterior uterine wal

Ellis van Creveld syndrome (chondroectodermal dysplasia, MIM 22550) in three siblings from a non-consanguineous mating.

The major diagnostic features of Ellis van Creveld syndrome (EvC) includes disproportionate short stature, polydactyly, ectodermal anomalies, and structural heart defects. We describe three siblings with EvC of a non-consanguineous mating. The history of these siblings well illustrate the clinical manifestations and complications that children with EvC encounter. All three girls had short stature, narrow rib cage, polydactyly and nail hypoplasia. The first daughter died in early infancy in respiratory failure. The second daughter underwent open heart surgery for atrial septal defect repair. Th

Oral manifestations of Ellis-van Creveld syndrome: report of two siblings with unusual dental anomalies.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC), also called chondroectodermal dysplasia, is a rare occurrence inherited as an autosomal recessive disease. Despite the fact that oral manifestations play an important role in the diagnosis criteria for EvC, few detailed reports have been published in the dental literature. This articles presents two siblings with EvC, a boy aged 9 years and a girl aged 7 1/2 years, a product of unaffected first cousin parents. The patients manifests: chondrodysplasia of tubular bones resulting in disproportionate dwarfism, polydactyly and syndactyly of hands and feet, severe d

[Ellis-van Creveld syndrome: an easy early diagnosis?].

Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome is a rare chondroectodermal dysplasia. Congenital heart disease is present in more than one-half of cases. The majority are partial atrioventricular septal defects and affect the atrial septum. Although isolated cases of the syndrome are uncommon, an early diagnosis is made in most of the patients because of their cardinal manifestations. The cases of two gypsy brothers with Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome and congenital heart disease (ostium primum atrial septal defect and single atrium), diagnosed during adulthood, are presented.

Oral and dental anomalies in Ellis van Creveld syndrome (chondroectodermal dysplasia): report of a case.

A case of Ellis van Creveld syndrome is described in which, in addition to all the major features constituting the tetrad of chondroectodermal dysplasia, there was (unusually) bipedal hexadactyly. As well as the frequently reported oral anomalies, this case exhibited taurodontism of permanent and some primary molars, a finding rarely reported in this syndrome.

Chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome): a case report.

A case of chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome) with a remarkable number of the classic oral and dental changes is described. This syndrome involves all embryonic tissue layers and is polysymptomatic; yet some oral and dental manifestations are pathognomonic and must be considered in primary diagnostic criteria. However, in some patients, these oral and dental manifestations are not clinically evident leading to misdiagnosis.

Del(12)(p11.21p12.2) associated with an asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy or chondroectodermal dysplasia-like syndrome.

We describe a 5-year-old Japanese boy who has some radiographic findings characteristic of asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (ATD)-chondroectodermal dysplasia with a de novo chromosome abnormality. He also has mild mental retardation, short stature, hypoplastic hair and skin, oligodontia, small thoracic cage, hypoplastic pelvis and cone-shaped epiphyses of hands. On cytogenetic studies he was found to have a de novo del(12)(p11.21p12.2). These results suggest that the locus of the gene associated with ATD-chondroectodermal dysplasia may be situated at 12p11.21p12.2.

[The Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome. Apropos 2 clinical cases].

The chondroectodermal dysplasia--Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome--is an unusual form of congenital disease, genetically transmitted with a recessive autosomal pattern, which involves the skeletal system, nails and teeth. In about 50 to 60 percent of cases, the affected individuals show cardiac abnormalities, and the most common are single atrium, large atrial septal defect, ostium primum type. Other abnormalities may accompany these lesions, such as aortic atresia, hypoplasia of the ascending aorta or of the left ventricle. About half of the patients die in the childhood due to cardiorespiratory co

Skeletal histopathology in fetuses with chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome).

Chondroectodermal dysplasia (CED) is an uncommon autosomal recessive disorder and one of the short rib polydactyly syndromes (SRPS). It is characterized by acromelic and mesomelic shortness of limbs, postaxial polydactyly, small chest, ectodermal dysplasia, and in many cases, congenital heart defects. Controversy exists over possible changes in the growth plate. With the advent of ultrasonographic examination, increasing numbers of fetuses with osteochondrodysplasias are examined by pathologists. Since histopathologic examination of the skeletal system is useful in defining various osteochondr

Clinical and radiological features of chondroectodermal dysplasia.

This report documents the presence of chondroectodermal dysplasia in southwestern Saudi Arabia by describing the clinical and radiological features in three patients from two families. Mesomelic dwarfism, characteristic orodental manifestations, small thorax, nail hypoplasia and polydactyly of the hands were seen in all cases. Two patients had atrial septal defect; the third patient, who died, had an undefined cardiac anomaly with congestive heart failure. In addition to the typical radiological features, variations such as anterior scalloping of dor-solumbar vertebrae, syntarsaly and polydact

[The Ellis-van Creveld syndrome].

A case of Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome is presented. The diagnosis was established after birth and was based on three major symptoms: unproportionally small stature, hexadactylism and ectodermal dysplasia. The heart finding was normal and the other laboratory tests were negative. Other symptoms were less important for this syndrome. It is a chondroectodermal dysplasia of autosomal recessive type. Reports from the literature are discussed as well, especially symptoms that are rarely found in such patients. This report is intended to point out the effective role of ultrasonography in establishing

[Clinico-roentgenologic semeiotics of chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome)].

The paper is devoted to the description of a rare hereditary systemic skeletal disease--chondroectodermal dysplasia (CED). The clinical symptoms of CED are divided into 4 groups. On the basis of 2 cases, symptoms of the affection of the locomotor system in patients with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome are analyzed. An x-ray picture of hand and foot lesions is characterized not only by change in the shape, size, number and synostosis of some bones but also by marked reorganization of osseous tissue in the epimetaphysial regions. X-ray examination was shown to be the chief method for investigation of

Comparative histopathology of the growth cartilage in short-rib polydactyly syndromes type I and type III and in chondroectodermal dysplasia.

The histopathology of growth cartilage of long bones was studied in two cases of chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome), a case of short-rib polydactyly (SRP) type I (Saldino-Noonan syndrome), three cases of short-rib polydactyly (SRP) type III (Verma-Naumoff syndrome), and a case with polydactyly without other skeletal abnormalities but with visceral malformations. The lesions were qualitatively similar in chondroectodermal dysplasia and SRP I: regular concave ossification line, short, slightly irregular columns, regularly dispersed hypertrophic chondrocytes. In SRP III, the
