BACKGROUND: In polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) affecting the femur, 6 types of stable femoral deformities have been identified, ranging from the mild type 1 to the most severe type 6. The purpose of our study was to identify the type of deformity present at diagnosis in children with PFD affecting the femur, and to investigate possible changes in the original type with growth.
METHODS: Twenty-seven children affected by either PFD or McCune-Albright syndrome, with 46 affected femurs, were consecutively observed from 1994 to 2010. Radiographs of the pelvis and femurs were taken at diagnosis

Fibrous dysplasia is benign developmental disorders of bone where normal lamellar cancellous bone is replaced with immature fibro-osseus tissue resulting in poorly formed trabeculae of immature woven bone. It may affect one (monostotic) or multiple bones (polyostotic). Polyostotic disease is less common, 20-25% of patients, mostly in children below 10 years old and tends to enlarge beyond bone maturation ration which can cause pain, progressive damage and higher tendency of pathological fractures.(1) We report a case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia present on bilateral tibia diaphysis. Patien

INTRODUCTION: For complex femoral deformities in patients affected by polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and coxa vara associated with shepherd's crook deformity of the femoral shaft, the correct treatment is stabilization with an interlocking cervicodiaphyseal nail after correction of all of the femoral deformities.
STEP 1 THE FIRST-STAGE PROCEDURE—INTERTROCHANTERIC VALGUS OSTEOTOMY AND FIXATION WITH A HIP BLADE-PLATE PREOPERATIVE PLANNING: Evaluate the patient radiographically and select the hardware.
STEP 2 PATIENT PREPARATION: Position the patient on the traction table.
STEP 3 PREPARATION OF

Multiple non-ossifying fibromas (MNOFs) occur either isolated or in association with other anomalies, are usually localized in the long bones of the lower limbs, may be radiographically confused with other skeletal lesions, and tend to heal spontaneously with the completion of the skeletal growth. Segmental distribution, either monomelic or polymelic and ipsilateral, is rare and commonly observed in the context of developmental diseases known as "RASopathies", which are caused by mutations in genes that encode components or regulators within the Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling p

BACKGROUND: In patients with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with extensive femoral involvement, severe coxa vara may cause complex femoral deformities that are difficult to treat with a single-stage surgical procedure. We evaluated the results of treatment of such patients with a two-stage procedure.
METHODS: Eleven patients with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and severe coxa vara (including one who required bilateral treatment and one who required repeat treatment) were treated surgically at a mean age of fourteen years and four months. A two-stage surgical procedure was planned to correct the

Children from 4 to 7 years of age with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) may need internal fixation of the femur for either fracture or osteotomy. At that age, the small size of the femur allows only the use of small intramedullary nails. However, titanium elastic nails and rigid intramedullary pediatric interlocking femoral nails - good for fracture or osteotomy fixation in the normal femur - are not indicated in PFD. From 2009 to 2011, we treated eight cases of PFD femoral fracture and deformity by internal fixation with a custom-modified adult humeral nail to which a spiral blade was conn

Deformity of the proximal femur in fibrous dysplasia leads to deviation of the mechanical axis of the hip, which may lead to the development of secondary osteoarthritis (OA). This study investigated the prevalence and predisposing factors for the development of OA in patients with fibrous dysplasia of the proximal femur. We reviewed the records of 209 patients from our institutional database with fibrous dysplasia of the proximal femur, investigating possible predisposing factors including patient demographics, the extent of the coxa vara deformity, the presence of peri-articular disease, and

Fibrous dysplasia of the spine is very rarely observed. We reported a case of a 57-year-old woman, who presented with neck and bilateral shoulder pain with histologically confirmed fibrous dysplasia, involving the first and second thoracic vertebrae. Clinical and radiological findings were not specific for fibrous dysplasia. The histological biopsy was required for a confirmed diagnosis. Endocrine and metabolic evaluations are required to rule out diseases such as hyperthyroidism, Cushing syndrome and osteomalacia. Fibrous dyplasia can be managed by appropriate medical and surgical treatments

BACKGROUND: Mazabraud's syndrome is defined as the association between fibrous dysplasia and intramuscular myxomas. The syndrome was first described in 1967 and, up until now, less than 100 cases have been reported worldwide. Here we report the association between this rare syndrome and thyroid cancer. When a malignant disease occurs in a patient affected by this syndrome, the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant bone lesions should be undertaken carefully.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 57-year-old Caucasian male, admitted for diffuse bone pain localized in the lef

The authors report a new case of Mazabraud syndrome in a 69-year-old woman complaining of pain in her right thigh. Plain radiographs demonstrated radiological findings consistent with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of the right femur and tibia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study showed soft tissue tumors located in the vastus intermedius muscle with typical signal features of intramuscular myxomas. Biopsy was not performed because of its benign nature. Symptomatic treatment was prescribed and all the lesions remained 1 year after the diagnosis.

A 13-year-old boy with meningiomatosis, McCune-Albright syndrome, and gray platelet syndrome presented with an enlarging "lump" on his right forehead. A head CT scan revealed a polyostotic fibrous dysplasia involving the entire skull. A 3.4-cm right frontal osseous cavity and an overlying right forehead subcutaneous soft-tissue mass were seen, measuring 5.2 cm in diameter and 1.6 cm thick. Ultrasound of the cavity and overlying mass showed swirling of blood and an arterialized waveform. MRI revealed an en plaque meningioma underlying the cavity. An intraosseous pseudoaneurysm fed by 3 distal a

The lesions of fibrous dysplasia usually stabilize after adolescence, and the surgical treatment of adult patient remains the mainstay. However, the surgical treatment alone may be not enough for patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. We present the case of a surgically treated 36-year-old man with a diagnosis of progressive polyostotic fibrous dysplasia in the craniomaxillofacial region. The patients presented the swelling symptoms originally in the parietal bone at the age of 8 years, and extended gradually to almost all of the craniomaxillofacial bones during the following 28 years wit

Intramuscular myxomas are benign and rare tumors that affects predominantly the lower limbs. The association of myxomas and fibrous dysplasia, usually polyostotic, is rarer. This association is known as Mazabraud's syndrome, of which about 81 cases have been described in the literature. We present a new case of this uncommon association to emphasise the importance of recognizing this syndrome in the diagnosis and appropriate management of the patient.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) of bone is a rare skeletal disease often associated with bone pain, deformities and fractures. The bisphosphonate therapies are reported to be useful for bone pain, but seem to be not suitable for fracture repairs of extremities. This is the first report of zoledronate-induced radiological improvement and long bone fracture union in polyostotic FD. A 30-year-old Japanese female had bilateral shepherd's crook deformities typical to FD and right pathological femoral fracture and left humeral fracture nonunion. These fractures occurred without major traumas and the humeral
