Syndromic fibrous dysplasia of the proximal femur.

A woman in her 50s presented with a 1-year history of left hip pain that increased over the past 2 weeks. The pain began following a low-energy fall. During the 1-year period, she had multiple lesions in the thigh and gluteal region, which were surgically excised. She was evaluated and diagnosed with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of the left femur with a pathological fracture and multiple intramuscular neurofibromas. She underwent closed reduction and proximal femoral nailing of the left femur. The relation of fibrous dysplasia to McCune-Albright syndrome and Mazabraud syndrome (rare) has been

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia: Unveiling the complexity of a rare bone disorder through a case report.

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia is a benign but potentially debilitating bone disorder characterized by the gradual replacement of normal bone with fibrous tissue. The polyostotic form, less common than the monostotic form, affects multiple bones, often asymmetrically. Clinical manifestations are variable and may include bone pain, deformities, pathologic fractures. Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis. Treatment is primarily symptomatic. We report the case of a 7-year-old girl admitted to our department for intermittent bone pain. History revealed a spontaneous pathological fracture of the

Treatment of Pathological Femoral Fractures Caused by Fibrous Dysplasia Using the Bridging Combination Internal Fixation System: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare skeletal lesion. Current FD therapies center on surgery, the only modality with curative potential. Pharmacologic agents show promise but still lack large-scale evidence of halting disease progression. However, there is currently no unified surgical protocol for FD. Therefore, identifying an effective surgical approach remains important. CASE REPORT We report a case of a 29-year-old Chinese male patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD), presenting with Shepherd's crook deformity and a pathological fracture in the subtrochanteric region of the

Delayed Diagnosis of McCune-Albright Syndrome in Adulthood Revealed by Spinal Fibrous Dysplasia: Report of 2 Cases.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by fibrous dysplasia of bone, café-au-lait skin pigmentation, and endocrine abnormalities. Adult presentation with spinal fibrous dysplasia, although previously reported, is uncommon and diagnostically challenging. We report 2 cases of MAS diagnosed in young women who initially presented with persistent back pain. Both patients underwent imaging studies that revealed multiple lytic lesions in the spine, raising concern for metastatic disease. Further evaluation confirmed the presence of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia withou

McCune-Albright Syndrome as a Rare Cause of Fanconi Syndrome and Kidney Failure: A Case Report and Literature Review.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare systemic genetic condition classically characterized by childhood-onset polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, café-au-lait skin pigmentation, and precocious puberty. Kidney involvement in MAS is infrequently recognized, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where genomic testing may be limited. We presented the first case report of MAS presenting with Fanconi syndrome and progressive kidney failure, which we postulated represents a phenotypic expansion of the renal phenotype associated with MAS, in addition to hyperthyroidism, osteoid osteoma, bone

Preoperative Virtual Planning Combined with 3D-Printed Surgical Guide Technology for Correction of Shepherd's Crook Deformity: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Shepherd's crook deformity, a rare and severe skeletal malformation, is characterized by a distinctive shepherd's crook-like curvature of the proximal femur. This pathological condition manifests as a marked reduction in the femoral neck-shaft angle (typically measuring less than 90 degrees). The deformity is most frequently observed in patients with fibrous dysplasia (FD), where it is a hallmark skeletal manifestation of the disease. CASE REPORT A 12-year-old boy presented with progressive deformity of both lower limbs. Physical examination revealed a typical "shepherd's crook" def

Continuous subcutaneous octreotide infusion in congenital hyperinsulinism: practical application and insights in infancy and early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Poliomyelitis can cause long-term neuromuscular deficits, predisposing survivors to lower limb fractures. Altered biomechanics, muscle weakness, and osteopenia complicate management, yet comprehensive evidence on fracture patterns, treatment, and outcomes is limited. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review lower limb fractures in patients with post-polio residual paralysis (PPRP), analyzing epidemiology, mechanisms of injury, management strategies, complications, and functional outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus (PROSPERO: CRD420251180231) identifie

Adoptive NK cell transfer confers neuroprotection by attenuating neuroinflammation and alpha-synuclein pathology in a mouse model of synucleinopathy.

UNLABELLED: Clevidipine (Cleviprex), a late-generation dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist available as a lipid emulsion for intravenous infusion, is approved in the US for the reduction of blood pressure (BP) when oral therapy is not feasible or desirable. Intravenous clevidipine is effective in the treatment of both acute preoperative and postoperative hypertension in adult cardiac surgery patients, and with a rapid onset and short duration of action the drug can be easily titrated for predictable BP control. Moreover, in terms of controlling acutely elevated BP in this patient popula

The diagnostic utility of cytology specimen in a case of EWSR1::NFATC2 sarcoma.

EWSR1::NFATC2 sarcoma, a rare round cell sarcoma constituting the majority of EWSR1::non-ETS sarcomas, has recently been defined in the latest WHO classification. To date, the cytological findings of EWSR1::NFATC2 sarcoma remain undocumented. We present the case of a 25-year-old man with a history of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia in the right leg, referred to our hospital with left thigh pain. Cytological findings included metachromasia, minimally pleomorphic round cells, and eosinophilic infiltration. There was no precursor fibrous dysplasia and the initial diagnosis was undifferentiated pleo

Decreased calcium permeability caused by biallelic TRPV5 mutation leads to autosomal recessive renal calcium-wasting hypercalciuria.

Hypercalciuria is the most common metabolic risk factor in people with kidney stone disease. Its etiology is mostly multifactorial, although monogenetic causes of hypercalciuria have also been described. Despite the increased availability of genetic diagnostic tests, the vast majority of individuals with familial hypercalciuria remain unsolved. In this study, we investigated a consanguineous pedigree with idiopathic hypercalciuria. The proband additionally exhibited severe skeletal deformities and hyperparathyroidism. Whole-exome sequencing of the proband revealed a homozygous ultra-rare varia

Fibrous Dysplasia Polyostotic: When Radiology Clarifies the Diagnosis.

Fibrous dysplasia is a rare non-hereditary congenital condition characterized by 2 main forms: monostotic and polyostotic. Monostotic is the more common form, while polyostotic, often associated with a syndrome, is rarer. The case presented involves a 10-year-old patient who was diagnosed with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia accompanied by an endocrinopathy. This report explores the clinical and radiological aspects of this condition based on the patient's case.

Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia: A Case Report.

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) is a scarce noncancerous bone condition characterized by the failure to form mature lamellar bone and arrest in the form of woven bone, resulting in deformities and functional limitations. Extreme forms of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia can lead to leontiasis ossea, an exceptionally uncommon presentation. We report a case of a 32-year-old man displaying facial abnormalities indicative of leontiasis ossea. Through radiographic and histopathological assessments, the diagnosis of PFD was confirmed. Surgical intervention was undertaken to address symptoms and en

Navigation-assisted occipitocervical fixation and decompression in a patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare skeletal disorder characterized by the replacement of normal bone with fibrous connective tissue, leading to abnormal bone formation. This case report details the successful treatment of a 61-year-old woman with FD at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ). The patient, who had a history of intracranial meningioma and had already been diagnosed with FD, experienced worsening gait disturbance and muscle weakness following a fall. Imaging studies revealed extensive polyostotic FD lesions in the skull and cervical spine, along with a C2 odontoid fracture causing spina

Reactivating Sleeping Intramedullary Nail in a 16-Year-Old Female with Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia: A Case Report on Complications and Potential Solutions.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare condition in which normal spongy and cortical bone is replaced by non-neoplastic fibrous tissue, leading to weakened bone matrix and increased risk of pathological fractures and deformities. Treating these deformities poses a significant challenge for surgeons. While various cases of surgical stabilization and limb lengthening using intramedullary nails have been reported, there is limited evidence on the use of Motorized Intramedullary Limb-Lengthening Nails (MILLNs) in FD patients. This case report presents the clinical history of a patient with F

McCune-Albright Syndrome: A Case From Mauritius.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare genetic disease characterized by a triad of fibrous dysplasia, café-au-lait spots, and endocrine dysfunction. We present a 15-year-old male patient from Mauritius with MAS having multiple café-au-lait macules (CALM) and suffering from polyostotic fibrous dysplasia involving long bones of bilateral lower limbs and craniofacial deformities without endocrine abnormality. This case highlights the long-term management of MAS in a pediatric patient, focusing on both surgical interventions and the use of denosumab to address bone fragility.
