Bone involvement in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is rare. The differential diagnosis between HL bone localization and other malignant or benign skeletal diseases is challenging. We report the case of a girl affected by classic HL, initially staged IVA because of supradiaphragmatic lymph nodes and skeletal involvement. After 6 ABVD (adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) cycles, positron emission tomography (PET) showed a complete metabolic response of the nodal localizations and a persistent, high metabolic activity of bone lesions. Salvage treatment followed by autologous stem cell transpl

Mc Cune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare disorder defined by the triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, "café au lait" skin hyperpigmentation and hyperfunctioning endocrinopathies, such as precocious puberty. MAS is caused by an activating post zygotic somatic mutation of GNAS gene, coding for the alpha-subunit of the stimulatory G protein (Gsalpha). In endocrine tissues, this mutation results in overproduction of hormones and endocrine cell hyperfunction and proliferation. Whereas the association of hyperthyroidism and thyroid adenomas is well known in MAS, the relation with thyroid carcino

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a skeletal developmental anomaly, which is non-hereditary and idiopathic in origin. It is characterized by the replacement of normal bone with the excess proliferation of fibrous tissue in irregular bony trabeculae. Patients might complain of swelling, pain, or numbness on the affected side. The incidence of monostotic FD (MFD) is four times more than that of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. In MFD, the maxilla is more commonly affected than the mandible. The clinical behavior and rapid progression of FD renders the treatment challenging. The malignant potential is 0.5%

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a fibro-osseous lesion where normal bone and marrow is replaced with fibrous tissue, resulting in formation of bone that is weak and prone to expansion. It is classified according to the number of affected bones, and its association to endocrine alterations, that is, monostotic (80-85%), polyostotic forms (20-30%), and Albright's disease. Involvement of two or more bones is termed as polyostotic FD, a relatively uncommon condition. Here we report a rare case of polyostotic FD involving facial bones, orbital bones, sphenoid bone, and spine in a 21-year-old male patient

BACKGROUND: Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) is an uncommon developmental bone disease in which normal bone and marrow are replaced by pseudotumoral tissue. The etiology of PFD is unclear, but it is generally thought to be caused by sporadic, post-zygotic mutations in the GNAS gene. Herein, we report the case of a young female with bone pain and lesions consistent with PFD, unique physical findings, and gene mutations.
CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old female presented with unbearable bone pain in her left foot for 4 years. Multiple bone lesions were detected by radiographic examinations, and a

PURPOSE: The natural history of fibrous dysplasia (FD) is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in demographic, clinical, and radiographic characteristics among patients with craniofacial FD, including McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS), polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD), and monostotic fibrous dysplasia (MFD). We hypothesized that patients with MAS would show higher disease severity, have more complications, and undergo more operations than those with PFD or MFD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients with MAS or FD, evaluated at Massa

INTRODUCTION: Factor XI (FXI) deficiency is a hematologic condition that is rarely encountered by the arthroplasty surgeon. Effective risk assessment and perioperative management are paramount in minimizing the risk of intra- and post-operative bleeding in this patient population. An interdisciplinary approach is crucial in minimizing complications and achieving successful outcomes. We present the case of a patient that successfully underwent conversion total hip arthroplasty (THA) following failed internal fixation of a proximal femur fracture.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a developmental bone disorder caused by the hamartamatous proliferation of bone-forming cells. A 29-year-old male patient with diagnosis of FD was admitted to our clinic with the symptoms of severe craniomaxillofacial involvement of FD beginning from last year. Neurological examination revealed diplopia, horizontal nystagmus, conductive hearing loss, and partial vision loss. In his medical history, it was reported that he had undergone intramedullary nailing operation in his left femur due to a pathological fracture approximately 8 years ago in the orthopedics clinic

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare bone disorder in which normal intramedullary bone is replaced by fibro-osseous tissue, which is complicated by the progression of Shepherd's crook deformity. How to predict the progression of Shepherd's crook deformity is still a challenging for the orthopedic surgeon.
METHODS: A total of 159 cases were reviewed in the retrospective study between January 2000 and September 2016. Clinical and monitoring data were collected. We analyzed the correlationship between the bone turnover markers and other parameters (age, gender, FD type, deformity, BMI, a

We report the case of a 43-year-old male patient, who presented with severe osteoporosis and pain at multiple sites and a chest X-ray suggestive of few cystic lesions in bilateral ribs. Subsequently, the patient was referred for bone scan, in view of the suspicion of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia or neoplastic lesions. Bone scan showed homogenously increased tracer uptake in the axial and appendicular skeletal system, suggestive of metabolic superscan. Computed tomography neck localized right inferior parathyroid adenoma and expansile lytic skeletal lesions suggestive of brown tumors were also

Gene dosage imbalance resulting from an extra copy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21) contributes to numerous clinical features in Down syndrome (DS). While dysregulated metabolism has long been noted in DS, the underlying cause is poorly understood and vastly understudied. To fill this critical knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive metabolic analysis of Dp(16)1Yey/+mice (abbreviated Dp16), a segmental duplication model carrying ~58% of the triplicated Hsa21 gene orthologs. Our multi-tissue transcriptomic analyses reveal shared and sex-specific increases in expression dosage of the triplicat

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign bone disorder, in which normal bone structure is replaced by fibrous connective tissue. Polyostotic FD is also related to McCune-Albright syndrome with possible endocrine disorder and Cafe-au-lait macules. Although FD commonly presents as craniofacial bone abnormality, atypical presentation can be misleading and pose a difficulty in clinical diagnosis. Here we report a case of polyostotic FD, who presented as an accidental finding of multiple spinal osseous lesions, leading to clinic workup for metastatic cancer.

Pure intraosseous arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a limb bone is extremely rare. Furthermore, there is currently insufficient information on the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for pure intraosseous AVMs. We herein report a case of pure intraosseous AVM of the proximal femur occurring in a patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. The patient was a 39-year-old woman who presented with pain in the right thigh. Plain radiographs and computed tomography scans revealed a medullary lytic lesion with expansion and thinning of the bone cortex in the right proximal femur, mimicking a prima

Individuals with fibrous dysplasia, particularly of the proximal femur, present significant challenges to the orthopaedic care team. Higher risks for fracturing and bone resorption make joint replacement a tenuous solution. Underlying associated conditions such as increased vascularity, bone deformity, and neurological and endocrine abnormalities complicate treatment further. Because of the low prevalence, there has not been much written in the literature on joint replacement in the setting of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. Yet, understanding the physiology of the condition and subsequent care

Infantile Cushing's syndrome is potentially found as part of McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) which is caused by postzygotic somatic mutations of the GNAS gene. MAS is typically characterized by a triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, café-au-lait skin pigmentation, and precocious puberty or other endocrine hyperfunction. Here, we describe a 2-month-old female infant with features of Cushing's syndrome without café au lait spots, polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, and clinical evidence of other endocrine hyperfunction. Investigations demonstrated adrenocorticotropic hormone-independent Cushing's s

BACKGROUND: McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare multisystem disorder that classically was defined by the triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of bone, café-au-lait skin pigmentation, and precocious puberty. It is a condition that has a gradual onset, slow growth rate and remain painless throughout. The clinical phenotype of MAS is highly variable and no definite treatment is available.
CASE PRESENTATION: This article describes two cases, a 10-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, both with MAS comprising deforming craniofacial FD. Challenges related to diagnosis and management included
