Filarial nematodes cause significant illness worldwide, including lymphatic and subcutaneous filariases in tropical regions. Dirofilaria asiatica is a recently described canine filarioid increasingly implicated in zoonotic human infections. Here, we report a patent infection in a child in Sri Lanka who had persistent microfilaraemia after 2 rounds of diethylcarbamazine treatment.

We report 2 cases of asymptomatic Dirofilaria microfilaremia in humans in Sri Lanka, detected during night blood surveillance for lymphatic filariasis in 2025. Partial sequence of microfilarial cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene revealed that both infections were caused by the novel species D. asiatica, originally described in Hong Kong as Candidatus D. honkongensis.

INTRODUCTION: Molecular diagnostics have improved infectious disease detection, yet their role in parasitology remains nuanced.
METHODS: We compared the performance of the AMPLIQUICK®Fecal Parasitology assay with the conventional methods encompassing microscopy, antigen testing and in-house PCR testing, in a reference laboratory for parasitology in a travel clinic. The detection of protozoa, helminths, and microsporidia was evaluated on 107 stool samples from 99 patients with suspected gastrointestinal parasitic infections, of which 40 specimens were tested retrospectively and 67 were collect

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are parasitic intestinal worms infecting humans through contact with, or ingestion of, soil contaminated with eggs shed by infected individuals. STHs include roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercoralis), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma ceylanicum). Their transmission is influenced by water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services and practices. Unlike past reviews, this scoping review did not assess effect sizes or strength of associations. Instead, it aimed to: map WASH-related

Recently, food deficiency has become the most critical problem and a major global challenge. Rapid population growth requires increased food production to meet the resulting demand. High meat and chicken prices prompted the world to focus on fish production to meet ongoing food needs. Seafood is rich in vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Fish-borne parasitic diseases are primarily found in people in most countries, causing severe illness and death. This review article will focus on the most important parasites affecting marine fishes and the most popular parasitic diseases affecting fish global

Deltamethrin is among the pyrethroids most frequently detected in Egyptian irrigation canals and drains, the same water bodies that support Biomphalaria alexandrina, the snail that transmits Schistosoma mansoni in Egypt. The objective of this study was to characterize the response of adult B. alexandrina to sublethal concentrations of a commercial deltamethrin formulation, using hemocyte, biochemical, and histopathological biomarkers. The hypothesis tested was that sublethal deltamethrin reduces the number of circulating hemocytes, alters the balance between hemocyte classes and damages hemocy

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic options for patients with poor-prognosis invasive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remain lacking. Although novel treatment strategies have demonstrated improved efficacy, they are frequently associated with substantial financial costs. Consequently, rigorous economic evaluation is essential to inform clinical and policy decisions.
METHODS: A three-state Markov model with a lifetime horizon was developed using clinical efficacy data from the ASCENT-04/KEYNOTE-D19 trial, along with treatment-related cost inputs. Lifetime costs and health outcomes in cases of advance

Schistosomiasis remains an important but neglected public health problem in Uganda. We estimated its prevalence, microscopy-based species distribution and associated factors among women delivering at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. A hospital-based analytical cross-sectional study included 392 women from 1 September to 30 December 2025. One stool and one urine specimen per participant were examined microscopically for Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression assessed associated factors; parsimonious conventional and Firth penalized models were u

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization in Brazil has shifted the epidemiological landscape of parasitic diseases, such as schistosomiasis and malaria. Although typically considered a rural infection, Schistosoma mansoni transmission persists in urban settings where sanitation and water access remain uneven. This study investigates the persistence and dynamics of urban schistosomiasis across neighborhoods of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
METHODS: Between 2011 and 2024 cross-sectional surveys were conducted to identify neighborhoods with the highest prevalence in the major metropolitan area of Salvador, Bah

Baylisascaris species parasitizing skunks have received limited attention compared to the well-characterized raccoon roundworm (B. procyonis). We present the first complete mitochondrial genome of a Baylisascaris sp. collected in Kansas, United States, from a striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). We morphologically identified the nematode as Baylisascaris sp., extracted DNA, sequenced it on the Illumina platform, and de novo assembled the complete mitochondrial genome. The complete mitochondrial genome was 14,752 bp, consisting of 12 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs. The genome had a s

Current American Heartworm Society guidelines characterize prescribing macrocyclic lactone preventives in the absence of antigen testing as "NOT RECOMMENDED," regardless of compliance history or geographic prevalence. Number Needed to Screen, an established human preventive medicine framework applied here as a novel veterinary screening tool, has not previously been used to evaluate this guideline. Using county-level Companion Animal Parasite Council prevalence data and the compliance-gap distribution as a proxy, we derive geographically stratified Number Needed to Screen estimates varying app

BACKGROUND: In many endemic regions, accurately diagnosing urogenital schistosomiasis remains challenging, particularly in cases of low-intensity infection and limited laboratory capacity. Exploring antigens that cross-react between related schistosome species provides a promising alternative to conventional diagnostic approaches. Schistosoma bovis-an animal parasite closely related to S. haematobium and sharing the same Bulinus snail hosts in overlapping habitats- is a strong candidate for such studies. This work therefore assessed whether the recombinant S. bovis 22.6 kDa antigen (rSb22.6 kD

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a life-threatening parasitic disease that affects nearly 250 million people worldwide, and over 780 million people are at risk of infection globally. Sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden, accounting for approximately 280,000 deaths annually. In Kenya, over 17.6 million people are at risk, and approximately 10 million are infected. Busia County, an endemic region, has a prevalence of 17.6%. In past MDAs, the County recorded a praziquantel coverage level of 64.11%, below the WHO-recommended threshold of over 75%. This study aimed to identify the determinants

The adoption of targeted selective treatment (TST) is an alternative for the sustainable management of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. TST mitigates the development of anthelmintic resistance by reducing the number of animals drenched while preserving the parasite refugia population. This study analysed the reduction of anthelmintic (AH) usage and assessed the AH cost reduction derived from a TST program compared to the previous whole-flock treatment regimen on a commercial smallholder sheep farm. Data acquisition spanned a 4.75-year period on a smallholder meat sheep farm in Colombo, Par

BACKGROUND: In rural areas, goat farming is essential for maintaining livelihoods by ensuring income generation and enhancing agricultural resilience globally. However, the productivity of small ruminant systems is significantly affected by parasitic infections from gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs), particularly in regions where extensive production systems dominate.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and infection intensity of GIN parasites and associated risk factors in goats in the Humbo District of Southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study e

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis is a common consequence of chronic liver injury and is driven largely by persistent activation of hepatic stellate cells and excessive extracellular matrix deposition. We previously identified Schistosoma japonicum-derived sja-miR-2a-3p as a parasite-derived microRNA with antifibrotic activity in schistosomiasis-associated liver fibrosis. Whether this cross-species regulatory molecule also modulates fibrogenesis beyond the context of schistosome infection remains unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated the effects of sja-miR-2a-3p in a carbon tetrachloride-ind
