Diaphragmatic eventration is an anomaly of the diaphragm. In Scimitar syndrome, a curved-shaped anomalous pulmonary venous drainage is seen. Association between these conditions is rare. We present a newborn with diaphragmatic eventration, whose diagnosis of Scimitar syndrome was made after surgical repair. Scimitar syndrome is a congenital disorder often associated with other heart and lungs anomalies. Diagnosis can be fortuitous but with important prognostic features.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a relatively common major life-threatening birth defect that results in significant mortality and morbidity depending primarily on lung hypoplasia, persistent pulmonary hypertension, and cardiac dysfunction. Despite its clinical relevance, CDH multifactorial etiology is still not completely understood. We reviewed current knowledge on normal diaphragm development and summarized genetic mutations and related pathways as well as cellular mechanisms involved in CDH. Our literature analysis showed that the discovery of harmful de novo variants in the fetus

Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare entity characterized by a combination of alterations, among which the following stand out: defects of the pericardium, heart, diaphragm, lower third of sternum and abdominal wall. On the other hand, congenital cardiac diverticulum is a rare malformation whose presentation is associated with Cantrell's pentalogy in some cases. We present the case of a child with Cantrell's pentalogy who, during follow-up, was diagnosed with left ventricular diverticulum, which required surgical management with a favorable outcome. Addressing these conditions requires the use of c

BACKGROUND: Both Caroli disease (CD) and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) are autosomal recessive disorders, which are more commonly found in infants and children, for whom surviving to adulthood is rare. Early diagnosis and intervention can improve the survival rate to some extent. This study adopted the case of a 26-year-old pregnant woman to explore the clinical and imaging manifestations and progress of CD concomitant with ARPKD to enable a better understanding of the disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to our hospital for more than 2

Tracheal atresia is an extremely rare condition whereby a partial or total obstruction of the trachea is seen. It is almost always lethal, with just a handful of cases that ended with a good outcome. In this study we report on a 15-week male fetus, diagnosed with hyperechogenic lungs, midline heart position and inverted diaphragm. Sonographic findings suggest congenital High Airway Obstruction Syndrome (CHAOS) An ultrasound scan and fetal MRI were not able to point out the exact obstruction level. In spite of extensive counselling, the parents opted to carry on with the pregnancy. Fetal demise

Congenital upper airway obstruction syndrome is a rare malformation that can be fatal to a newborn baby. It is defined as a complete or almost complete obstruction of the upper airways. CHAOS rate is unknown. We here report the case of a 24-year-old primiparous patient with no medical or surgical history. First-trimester ultrasound didn't show any abnormality. During the second trimester, ultrasonography showed extensive subcutaneous edema, hypertrophied lung with hyperechoic appearance, hypoplastic heart and large-volume ascites associated with severe oligoamnios. After having excluded the mo

BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a life-threatening birth defect that often co-occurs with non-hernia-related anomalies (CDH+). While copy number variant (CNV) analysis is often employed as a diagnostic test for CDH+, clinical exome sequencing (ES) has not been universally adopted.
METHODS: We analysed a clinical database of ~12 000 test results to determine the diagnostic yields of ES in CDH+ and to identify new phenotypic expansions.
RESULTS: Among the 76 cases with an indication of CDH+, a molecular diagnosis was made in 28 cases for a diagnostic yield of 37% (28/76).

Diaphragm dysfunction, which can be due to eventration or an abnormally high-positioned diaphragm, can cause respiratory compromise. Eventration is most commonly due to unilateral diaphragm paralysis, which reduces ventilatory function in adults by about 25%. Since the 1920s, this condition has been treated with diaphragm plication, which itself has evolved to include the use of several different techniques and materials. This review explores the relevant literature on diaphragm plication using sutures or staples for the treatment of eventration to determine if either provides a clinical benef

BACKGROUND Dunbar syndrome is a rare vascular alteration caused by the abnormal course of the median arcuate ligament of the diaphragm, which in some patients causes chronic compression of the celiac artery and can cause non-specific symptoms such as diarrhea, retro-sternal pain, vomiting, swelling, and nausea, or a typical symptomatic triad with weight loss, post-prandial abdominal pain, and epigastric murmur. Color Doppler ultrasound and duplex Doppler ultrasound provide a complete diagnostic framework of this disease. CASE REPORT We describe a case of 55-year-old man with post-prandial epig

Scientific evidence demonstrated a causal relationship between Zika virus infection during pregnancy and neurologic abnormalities and other congenital defects. The U.S. government's Zika Virus Disease Contingency Response Plan recognized the importance of preventing unintended pregnancy through access to high-quality family planning services as a primary strategy to reduce adverse Zika-related birth outcomes during the 2016-2017 Zika virus outbreak. The U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) includes three U.S. territories: American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and

BACKGROUND: Alport syndrome is a clinically heterogeneous nephropathy characterized by severe symptomatology at kidney level due to ultrastructural lesions of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) as consequence of mutations in COL4 genes. The disease has been linked to COL4A3/COL4A4/COL4A5 mutations, which impair GBM functionality and can be inherited in a dominant, recessive or X-linked transmission. Although a targeted Next Generation Sequencing approach has allowed identifying families with pathogenic mutations in more than one COL4 α3-α4-α5 heterotrimer encoding genes, leading to conclud
