Twin gastroschisis pregnancies poses challenges in prenatal diagnosis especially for multiple pregnancies among radiologists, and therefore impacts postnatal care by neonatologists and pediatric surgeons. This case emphasizes the successful management of twin babies born with gastroschisis, highligting the role of sutureless abdominal closure to the survival of twin babies.

The burden of congenital gastrointestinal (GI) anomalies is poorly understood. The aim of this systematic review to assess the global prevalence of congenital gastrointestinal (GI) anomalies. We conducted a systematic review of global population-level birth prevalence of gastroschisis, omphalocele, intestinal atresia, esophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, Hirschsprung's disease, and anorectal malformation. We identified 103 studies from high and middle-income countries. Gastroschisis was the most reported condition. Studies reported geographic heterogeneity in gastroschisis, omp

Gastroschisis-a congenital anomaly where there is an opening at the connection of the embryonic ectoderm and the amnion at the pars flaccida, resulting in the intestines protruding outside the body-is serious and requires surgical repair. The strongest risk factor is young maternal age. This study describes gastroschisis prevalence in the United States and Puerto Rico during 2000-2020 and indirectly examines whether prevalence patterns may be explained by maternal age trends. Using data from state and territorial surveillance systems (n = 46 total; n = 18 for all years), we expressed gastrosch

Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect characterized by the eventration of bowel loops through a right-sided paraumbilical opening. Prenatal detection of gastroschisis is generally straightforward due to advanced ultrasound techniques, and it is essential for optimizing both prenatal care and subsequent management. The prognosis for this condition is generally favorable, with positive long-term outcomes for most children. However, 10-15% of cases may follow a complicated course with an elevated risk of neonatal mortality or significant morbidity. Early detection enables effective

INTRODUCTION: We hypothesized that there is a higher prevalence of critical congenital heart defects (CCHD) among infants born with gastroschisis, which leads to worse outcomes during index neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission.
METHODS: Rates of gastroschisis, omphalocele, and CCHD were calculated from Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) annual data on all live births in the US. Separately, NICU admissions to the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) between 2017 and 2023 were analyzed for diagnosis of gastroschisis, omphalocele, or CCHD, as identified by ICD-10 codes.

INTRODUCTION: Omphalocele is a congenital abdominal wall defect that is characterized by herniation of the abdominal viscera through the umbilical ring. Compared with gastroschisis, omphalocele is less frequently associated with ileal atresia. This report describes a preterm newborn with a minor omphalocele complicated by ileal atresia, a complication that may have been previously underestimated.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-day-old preterm male infant (gestational age 34 weeks, birth weight 2005 g) presented with delayed meconium passage and persistent bilious gastric aspirates. Antenatal ultrasou

Birthing in a hospital with on-site surgical facilities (co-located care) is considered preferable for neonates with surgical conditions. However, it may not always be feasible. Whether transfer of surgical neonates from birth hospital to a surgical facility affects the outcomes of this cohort is unclear. We conducted a systematic review to investigate the association of birth location/transfer with all-cause mortality and disability among neonates with congenital/acquired surgical conditions. Data Sources from PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched till December 2024. Studie

The impact of delayed presentation to primary surgery on mortality and complication outcomes in children with gastrointestinal congenital anomalies is poorly understood. Using a cohort of 3767 children with gastrointestinal anomalies in 74 countries (2018-2019), we assessed predictors of delay and compare 30-day risk of all-cause mortality (ACM) and complication among children with delayed ($>$24 hours of life) versus non-delayed ($\le$24 of life) presentation to primary surgery. Children in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) had greater probability of delay (PR: 1.79; 95% CI: 1.59, 2.02)

INTRODUCTION: Standardization of care is an important tool to improve healthcare value and patient outcomes. We created a multidisciplinary clinical care guideline for management of infants with gastroschisis. The aim of the current work is twofold: 1. Determine effectiveness of our implementation strategy and 2. Determine the association between guideline use and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of infants diagnosed with gastroschisis at a single level IV NICU from 2010 to 2024. Provider utilization of four elements of the protocol (no elective intubation for s

BACKGROUND: The management of gastroschisis involves immediate surgery and post-surgery nutritional management. Ileus is a frequent complication, leading to difficulties in establishing enteral feeding. Parasympathomimetic agents, including neostigmine, are safely used in case of ileus in adults. Neostigmine was used in a single neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the management of ileus after gastroschisis repair.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report this experience of neostigmine use to improve digestive motility and its tolerance.
METHODS AND SETTINGS: This is an observation

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is a congenital anomaly with >90 % survival in high-income countries. Despite advances in neonatal care, survival remains below 20 % in much of sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluate temporal changes in mortality and current predictors of mortality after implementing a standardized care bundle at a tertiary facility in Malawi.
METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional study included neonates admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital between 7/1/2023 and 6/3/2024 with gastroschisis. In-hospital mortality was compared between this and a historical cohort (10/21/2019-11/30/2020). Bo

INTRODUCTION: Complex gastroschisis requires timely intervention to protect the fetal intestine from inflammation and strangulation and avoid viscero-abdominal disproportion (VAD). Earlier results in ovine models for the fetoscopic management of gastroschisis highlight the benefits of minimally invasive coverage; yet specialized instruments appear to be needed for better procedural execution. The aim of this study was to create and validate a first prototype instrument for the prenatal covering of the protruded intestines in gastroschisis.
METHODS: A 7-mm diameter fetoscopic instrument was de

BACKGROUND: Ventral body wall defects (VBWDs), including omphalocele and gastroschisis, result from failed embryonic midline closure and contribute to high neonatal morbidity. While thyroid hormones (THs) are essential for morphogenesis, their role in VBWD pathogenesis is not well defined.
AIM: To investigate the impact of TH deficiency on ventral body wall development in chick embryos and evaluate levothyroxine as a therapeutic intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hypothyroidism was induced on embryonic day 3 using thiourea (2.5 mg/50 μL), a thyroid peroxidase inhibitor. A rescue group rece

A newborn of 32 + 6 weeks' gestational age with prenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis was born through elective caesarean section. Ultrasonography at 16 + 4 gestational weeks (GW) showed a gastroschisis with free bowel loops floating in amniotic fluid. From 27 + 4 GW onward, serial ultrasounds showed the disappearance of extra-abdominal intestine and progressive intra-abdominal intestinal loops dilation, raising suspicion for vanishing gastroschisis. Birth weight was 2,136 grams and the external appearance of the abdomen was normal. An exploratory laparotomy was performed, finding a dilated prox
