A case of prune belly syndrome with patent urachus: Pediatric surgical aspects of a rare case report.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS), or Eagle-Barrett syndrome, is a rare congenital disorder defined by a triad of abdominal wall hypoplasia, urinary tract anomalies, and bilateral cryptorchidism. It is associated with high perinatal morbidity and mortality. A male infant born at 37 weeks via vaginal delivery presented with abdominal distension, thin wrinkled abdominal skin, urine discharge from the umbilicus, and bilateral cryptorchidism. Imaging revealed severe bilateral hydronephrosis and a patent urachus, confirming Prune Belly Syndrome. The urachus was surgically closed without complications, and

Neoplasms in prune belly syndrome: A novel case of early-onset metastatic bladder carcinoma and systematic review of reported tumors.

PURPOSE: Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital malformation complex characterized by cryptorchidism, urinary tract abnormalities and deficiency of the abdominal wall musculature. Although advances in neonatal and reconstructive care have substantially improved survival, the long-term risk of malignancy in this population remains poorly defined. We report a novel case of early-onset metastatic bladder carcinoma in a patient with PBS and perform a systematic review of all tumors described in association with the syndrome. METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed according

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Prune-belly Syndrome: An Update.

The Prune-Belly (Eagle-Barrett) syndrome (PBS) is a congenital and genetically heterogeneous disease, more prevalent in males, defined by the clinical triad (1) deficiency of abdominal muscles, (2) bilateral cryptorchidism, and (3) urinary tract abnormalities. The abdomen of an infant with PBS has a typical appearance, similar to the aspect of a prune, which gives it its name. Although the etiology of this disorder is still unknown, numerous theories, mutations, and genetic disturbances have been proposed to explain the origin of PBS. Prognosis can differ a lot from one patient to another, sin

Co-occurring non-urinary congenital anomalies among cases with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract.

Cases with congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) often have other associated anomalies. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the prevalence and the types of associated anomalies in CAKUT in a well-characterized population from northeastern France. The associated anomalies in CAKUT were collected in all live births, stillbirths and terminations of pregnancy during 29 years in 387,067 consecutive births of known outcome in the area covered by our population-based registry of congenital anomalies. Of the 1946 cases with CAKUT born during this period (prevalence at bi

Generation of induced pluripotent stem cell line, NCHi028-A, from a male child with Prune Belly Syndrome.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is a rare, multi-system congenital myopathy mainly affecting males, whose genetic basis is still being explored. Phenotypically, its morbidity spans from mild to lethal, and PBS cases manifest three cardinal pathological features: wrinkled, flaccid ventral abdominal wall with skeletal muscle deficiency, urinary tract dilation with poorly contractile smooth muscle, and intra-abdominal undescended testes. NCHi028-A is an iPSC line derived from skin fibroblasts of a 1-month-old male with PBS using Sendai Virus reprogramming factors. This iPSC line shows typical iPSC mor

Case Report: A rare case of prune belly syndrome with intraperitoneal cryptorchidism.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS), a rare congenital disorder characterized by the absence of abdominal wall musculature and abnormalities in the genitourinary tract, is primarily linked to the urethral obstruction during fetal development. Given the overall rarity of the PBS and its multisystem involvement, there is currently no consensus on the optimal management strategy for PBS patients. This case report elaborated the comprehensive therapeutic outcomes of a patient with PBS, who had previously undergone several surgeries, including vesicoscopic cross-trigonal ureteral reimplantation, and first-s

Diagnostic and management challenges of prune belly syndrome in a low-income country: a neonatal case report.

Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital anomaly defined by deficient abdominal wall musculature, urinary tract abnormalities, and cryptorchidism. It is associated with high morbidity, particularly in low-resource settings where prenatal imaging and specialized surgical care are limited. We report the first documented case of PBS from Somalia in a 6-day-old male neonate delivered without antenatal care. He presented with abdominal distension, respiratory distress, bilateral undescended testes, and oliguria. Laboratory tests showed impaired renal function and elevated inflammatory marker

Beyond borders: Prune belly syndrome unveiled in a nine-year-old Pakistani boy.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is characterised by a malformed urinary tract, undescended testes and abnormal abdominal wall musculature. No prior report of PBS is known to us from Pakistan. Most cases are diagnosed at birth, but we report the case of a nine-yearold boy who presented with the complaint of left flank pain for the past year. Upon physical examination, his abdomen was swollen with creased skin and lacked the rectus abdominis muscles. The scrotal skin had minimal wrinkling, and both the testes were undescended, along with the constriction in the external urethral meatus. This report a

Ruptured spinal dural arteriovenous fistula with subdural hematoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (SDAVFs) are the most common spinal vascular malformations and can lead to significant neurological deficits if left untreated. Although typically associated with chronic myelopathy, rupture of SDAVFs is a rare yet severe complication that can result in acute spinal cord injury secondary to intradural hematoma expansion. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 53-year-old male presented with fluctuating neck and back pain, unsteady gait, right leg numbness, and urinary retention, eventually attributed to a ruptured thoracic SDAVF resulting in a T3-T4 subdural hemat

Novel minimally invasive abdominoplasty for selected cases of prune belly syndrome: Step-by-step technique description and clinical indications.

BACKGROUND: Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is characterized by the triad of abdominal flaccidity, bilateral undescended testicles and genitourinary tract anomalies. A variable spectrum of abdominal wall laxity is observed in PBS. We present the first case of a novel technique using a minimally invasive abdominoplasty to specifically address patients with localized abdominal wall weakness in PBS. CASE PRESENTATION: A two-years-old child with PBS presented with recurrent febrile urinary tract infections. Ultrasonography demonstrated a dysplastic right kidney associated with significant ipsilateral

Combined Double-breasted Full-thickness Abdominal Flap Plication and Acellular Dermal Matrix in Prune-belly Syndrome Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of the abdominal wall in patients with prune-belly syndrome (PBS) following previous intra-abdominal procedures is a challenging problem with a high incidence of revision due to persistent bulging or herniation. The abdominal wall flaccidity not only produces a severe psychological and aesthetic discomfort for the patient but often determines functional disabilities, including inability to cough properly, impaired bowel and bladder function, and delay in posture and balance. METHODS: The authors describe three cases of reconstruction of abdominal wall using a modifi

The challenging diagnosis and management of the prune belly syndrome: A case report.

Prune belly syndrome is a rare disorder that occurs mainly in men. It is characterized by the triad of deficient abdominal wall muscles, the dilated urinary collecting system, bilateral cryptorchidism, and infertility. It mainly affects the genitourinary system, which involves the prognosis. We present the case of a preterm neonate male whose diagnosis of a prune belly was suspected in antenatal ultrasound. He had a urinary tract abnormality starting at 22 weeks of gestation. At birth, a clinical examination revealed a distended abdomen within a wrinkled and flaccid abdominal wall, a macropeni

Prune belly syndrome in a neonate with severe bilateral hydronephrosis: A rare case report from Somalia.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Prune belly syndrome (PBS), also known as Eagle-Barret syndrome, is a rare congenital disorder characterized by abdominal wall muscle underdevelopment, urinary system abnormalities, and cryptorchidism. This case report presents the clinical features, diagnosis, and management of PBS in a newborn. This is the first case report of prune belly syndrome in Somalia. The condition is estimated to occur in approximately 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 50,000 live births, making it a relatively uncommon presentation. Recognizing and managing this syndrome is crucial, as it can lead to

Long-term outcomes of kidney replacement therapy in Australians with prune belly syndrome.

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe long-term outcomes of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in Australians with prune belly syndrome in comparison to a control group of congenital kidney disease. METHODS: We identified all Australians treated with KRT between 1977 and 2021 with a diagnosis of PBS from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry. RESULTS: We identified 37 males (no females) who commenced KRT at a median age of 17 years (range 1-45). At initiation of KRT treatment, 54% of patients were on haemodialysis, 30% on peritoneal dialysis and 16% received a pre

PIEZO1 loss-of-function compound heterozygous mutations in the rare congenital human disorder Prune Belly Syndrome.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS), also known as Eagle-Barret syndrome, is a rare, multi-system congenital myopathy primarily affecting males. Phenotypically, PBS cases manifest three cardinal pathological features: urinary tract dilation with poorly contractile smooth muscle, wrinkled flaccid ventral abdominal wall with skeletal muscle deficiency, and intra-abdominal undescended testes. Genetically, PBS is poorly understood. After performing whole exome sequencing in PBS patients, we identify one compound heterozygous variant in the PIEZO1 gene. PIEZO1 is a cation-selective channel activated by vari
