PURPOSE: Umbilical cord hernia is poorly understood and often miscategorized as "omphalocele minor". Careless clamping of the cord leads to iatrogenic gut injury in the situation of umbilical cord hernia. This study aimed to determine the characteristics and outcomes of umbilical cord hernias. We also highlight an alternative repair method for umbilical cord hernias.
METHODS: We recorded 15 cases of umbilical cord hernias over 10 years. The patients' data were retrospectively reviewed, and preoperative preparation of the newborn, gestational age, birth weight, other associated malformations,

PAGOD Syndrome is an acronym for lung and pulmonary arteries hypoplasia, agonadism, omphalocele / diaphragmatic defect and dextrocardia. A series of 21 patients is described, where 90.5% had a 46,XY karyotype and only two cases 46,XX; 66.6% exhibited a female phenotype and 28.6% ambiguous genitalia. The occurrence of two patients 46,XX excludes the Y chromosome as a carrier of the genetic defect and raises the possibility of a recessive X-linked inheritance, without ruling out that the observed cases in siblings may be due to mutations in other genes as Stra6, VEGFA, VEGFB, VEGFC, and alternat

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a monogenetic disorder with progressive calcifications of the skin, the Bruch's membrane in the eyes and the arterial wall. Vascular disease is considered to be very prevalent, but the whole-body distribution of arterial calcifications in PXE is unknown. We aimed to systematically investigate arterial calcifications in PXE.
METHODS: We included 104 PXE patients from the Dutch PXE cohort and 93 hospital controls. All subjects underwent full-body low-dose CT scans without contrast. To investigate the prevalence and severity of arterial calc

Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is a rare spectrum of malformations involving various organ systems. Here, we present eight cases of URSMS, noted in autopsy, with different degrees of complexity, seven being the complete type and one being the partial type. All cases had gastrointestinal tract malformation in the form of the imperforate anus and indeterminate genitalia. Other gastrointestinal tract anomalies were anal agenesis in two cases, anorectal agenesis in two cases, and malformed lower intestinal tract in four cases. The associated renal abnormality was noted in five case

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is the most common abdominal wall defect. It is characterized by herniation of the intestine and other abdominal organs through a defect in the abdominal wall. Neuroblastoma is the most common malignant tumor observed during the neonatal period. It is a neuroendocrine tumor derived from neural crest cells that develops into the adrenal gland.
CASE: We report on the undescribed association between gastrochisis and congenital neuroblastoma, diagnosised during the prenatal period. The mother was a 20-year-old healthy pregnant woman in her second pregnancy. Obstetric ult

We report the case of an infant born after parvovirus B19-induced fetal hydrops, who presented at birth with bilateral abdominal wall laxity, which was more evident on the flanks. Imaging exams revealed congenital hypoplasia of oblique abdominal muscles not associated with other anatomical abnormalities except for small liver calcifications. We review the medical literature and identify similar cases associated with fetal ascites. We propose that isolated hypoplasia of abdominal wall muscles can be associated with fetal ascites from various causes, and represents a separate condition from prun

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumour refers to a non-malignant tumour-like mass resulting from an inflammatory reaction that is composed of granulation tissue with leukocyte infiltration that commonly occurs in the paediatric or young adult population. These tumours occur more commonly in the lungs and the orbit but rarely does it affect the gastrointestinal tract. It poses a clinical diagnostic challenge since it is a benign condition than can mimic the malignant counterpart. Our case is a rare presentation of the caecal pseudotumour in the presence of a right undescended abdominal testis ev

BACKGROUND: Congenital lipocytic tumours have rarely been reported in cattle. Lipomas are benign tumours, but infiltrative lipomas have significant health implications due to their aggressive infiltrative growth pattern.
CASE PRESENTATION: A calf was born with skeletal malformations and soft tissue proliferations, primarily on the external thoracic wall. The calf was euthanized for welfare reasons and submitted for post mortem examination. Necropsy, histopathology and post mortem computed tomography scanning revealed two types of lipocytic tumours. Widespread infiltrative lipomas were present

OBJECTIVE: From in vitro studies using cultures of orbital fibroblasts, it has become clear that cytokines play an important role in the orbital inflammation in Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). Orbital fibroblasts seem to be the key target cells of the autoimmune attack, and they are able to express the TSH receptor (TSH-R). In vivo data on the presence of cytokines in orbital tissues are sparse, and mostly limited to samples obtained from patients with endstage, inactive GO; the same holds true for the presence of the TSH-R. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the cytokine profi

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Secure closure of the pubic diastasis during bladder exstrophy and epispadias repair decreases the abdominal wall tension at the time of reconstruction. Pelvic osteotomies are routinely performed at the time of abdominal wall and bladder reconstruction in order to more easily facilitate pubic symphyseal diastasis approximation. Postoperative pelvic immobilization is performed by methods that include modified Buck's traction, modified Bryant's traction, and spica casting. People undergoing closure often require inpatient hospitalization for 2-8 weeks because of the pelvi

Gastroschisis (GS) is a structural defect of the anterior abdominal wall, usually diagnosed antenatally, that occurs with a frequency of approximately 4 per 10,000 pregnancies. Babies born with GS require neonatal intensive care and surgical management of the abdominal wall defect soon after birth. Although contemporary survival rates for GS are over 90%, these babies are at risk for significant morbidity, and require 4 to 6 weeks of costly, resource-intensive care in specialized neonatal units. Much consideration has been given to how best to treat the abdominal wall defect of GS. The traditi

BACKGROUND: Midgut volvulus is a complication of malrotation of bowel and mesenteric malfixation. In contrast, primary volvulus of the small bowel is a distinctly different and rare entity characterized by torsion of the entire small bowel with normal mesenteric fixation.
OBJECTIVE: To present the clinical and imaging findings in four infants with primary small bowel volvulus and normal bowel fixation in order to improve awareness of this entity among clinicians and radiologists and to discuss the potential etiologies of this entity to distinguish it from other causes of small bowel volvulus.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a congenital growth disorder characterised by abdominal wall defects, macroglossia and somatic gigantism. A number of associated features, including gastrointestinal and urinary tract polyps, have been described, but there are no previous reports of oral polyps occurring in this syndrome. We describe the first case of BWS presenting with an oral polyp. Clinicians should be alert to the possibility of BWS if other features of the syndrome are present, in children with oral polyps.

A 5-year-old domestic short-haired spayed female cat was presented for abdominal pain and suspended defecation. Abdominal radiographs confirmed constipation; abdominal ultrasonography showed a cystic oval structure attached to the colon. The structure exhibited a well-defined wall, composed of three layers. Its content was mildly echogenic and inhomogeneous. Laparotomy was performed and complete resection of the structure, and of part of the colon, was required (end-to-end anastomosis). Histopathology confirmed the structure to be a cystic formation of the colon with some areas of mucosal meta

Ventral body wall defects (VBWDs) are one of the main categories of human congenital malformations, representing a wide and heterogeneous group of defects sharing a common feature, that is, herniation of one or more viscera through a defect in the anterior body wall. Gastroschisis and omphalocele are the 2 most common congenital VBWDs. Other uncommon anomalies include ectopia cordis and pentalogy of Cantrell, limb-body wall complex, and bladder and cloacal exstrophy. Although VBWDs are associated with multiple abnormalities with distinct embryological origins and that may affect virtually any

Congenital lumbar hernias are rare malformations caused by defects in the development of the posterior abdominal wall. A known association exists with lumbocostovertebral syndrome; however other associated anomalies, including one case with arthrogryposis, have been previously reported. We present an infant girl with bilateral congenital lumbar hernias, multiple joint contractures, decreased muscle bulk and symptoms of malignant hyperthermia. Molecular testing revealed an R4861C mutation in the ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR1) gene, known to be associated with central core disease. This is the firs

INTRODUCTION: The extent of the abdominal wall defect in people with classic bladder exstrophy (CBE) varies, and can be extensive. In this study, human acellular dermis (HAD) was used to bridge the fascial gap, as an alternative to osteotomy, to support a fascial repair of the abdominal wall, and as a filler in selected cases of CBE.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the efficacy of the employed techniques of using HAD within the bladder exstrophy population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of six males, born with CBE, and who had abdominal wall defects were reviewed. Two children, aged 6

BACKGROUND: Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare syndrome, first described by Cantrell and co-workers in 1958. The syndrome is characterized by the presence of five major congenital defects involving the diaphragm, abdominal wall, the diaphragmatic pericardium, lower sternum and various congenital intra-cardiac abnormalities. The syndrome has never been reported in Tanzania, although may have been reported from other African countries. Survival rate of the complete form of pentalogy of Cantrell is as low as 20%, but recent studies have reported normal growth achieved by 6 years of age where correct

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCTION. Pentalogy of Cantrell is a very rare congenital multiple malformation with the poor outcome. Syndrome included the following pentad: abdominal wall defect, a defect of the lower sternum, anterior diaphragm defect, ectopia cordis, as well as a variety of intracardiac anomalies.
CASE REPORT: In the fifteenth week of the twin pregnancy, ultrasound examination showed multiple anomalies in one, as well as the absence of the nose apex in the other twin. The autopsy of the fetuses was performed after the abortion had been approved by the Ethics Committee. The external exami
