INTRODUCTION: Duplication of the gallbladder (GB) is a rare congenital abnormality occurring in 1 in 4000 to 5000 births. Three types have been reported: type I (split primordial GB), type II (2 separate GBs with their own cystic ducts), and type III (triple GBs drained by 1 to 3 separate cystic ducts). Patients with a duplicated GB are usually asymptomatic and are sometimes not diagnosed on preoperative imaging, which might increase the difficulty and risk of cholecystectomy. The key to successful treatment is total removal of the duplicated GB to avoid the recurrence of disease. Intraoperati

Background Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetically transmitted connective tissue disorder characterized by aortic root dilatation, dissection, and rupture. Molecularly, MFS pathological features have been shown to be driven by increased angiotensin II in the aortic wall. Using an angiotensin II-driven aneurysm mouse model, we have recently demonstrated that local inhibition of leptin activity restricts aneurysm formation in the ascending and abdominal aorta. As we observed de novo leptin synthesis in the ascending aortic aneurysm wall of patients with MFS, we hypothesized that local counteracti

A 21-year-old woman was admitted at 35 +4 weeks due to disappearance of fetal movement for one day. The ultrasound from other hospital indicated fetal gastroschisis. Abdominal ultrasound in our hospital confirmed that the discontinuity of the fetal abdominal wall by 4.5 cm. The stomach and part of the intestine were herniating into the amniotic cavity. Considering the possibility of gastroschisis and fetal distress, electronic fetal monitoring was implemented continuously and consultations of relevant departments were called immediately, including anesthesiology, neonatology and general pediat

BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC), classified in nine groups, is likely to be underreported, since milder isolated lesions in wellbeing newborns could often be undetected, and solitary lesions in the context of polymalformative syndromes could not always be reported. Regardless of form and cause, therapeutic options have in common the aim to restore the deficient mechanical and immunological cutaneous protection and to limit the risk of fluid leakage or rupture of the exposed organs. We aimed to review our institutional prevalence, comorbidities, treatment and outcome of newborns with

Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a very rare congenital anomaly occurring due to budding of the primitive foregut, and its common location is the posterior mediastinum. BC when diagnosed prenatally can be treated if it is encroaching on the development of lungs. BC has been reported in other locations such as cervical, thoracic, abdominal sites and also as subcutaneous lesions. Omphalocele is a congenital malformation occurring due to a central defect in the abdominal wall with herniation of the viscera. The nonentity documented here was found in a female fetus with 20 weeks of gestational age. The m

BACKGROUND: Ectopia cordis (EC) is a congenital anomaly associated with heart defects and extracardiac malformations.
OBJECTIVES: We determined the various presentations of EC diagnosed in our center between 2010 and 2017.
RESULTS: Seven fetuses from six pregnancies with EC were detected, five during the first trimester. Three were from multiple pregnancies, and both twins had EC in one monochorionic-monoamniotic pregnancy. Abdominal wall defects were detected in six fetuses. Kyphoscoliosis, cephalocele, clubfoot and short umbilical cord were other abnormalities. Five fetuses were terminated

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 1-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for a sternal defect and ventral abdominal wall hernia.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The cat appeared healthy. Palpation revealed a sternal defect, and the heart could be observed beating underneath the skin at the caudoventral aspect of the thorax. A 3-cm-diameter freely movable mass, consistent with a hernia, was also palpated at the cranioventral aspect of the abdomen. Thoracic radiographic and CT images revealed a sternal cleft, cranial midline abdominal wall hernia, and peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH

Omphaloceles are ventral abdominal wall defects that are associated with significant other anomalies in up to 80% of cases in some descriptions. Of these abnormalities, Cardiac defects are some of the more common ones, and have the most substantial impact on outcomes and survival. In cases with a severe congenital heart defect (CHD), the omphalocele management changes significantly. This article addresses the common defects seen, and their management issues.

PURPOSE: Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a human genomic imprinting disorder characterized by lateralized overgrowth, macroglossia, abdominal wall defects, congenital hyperinsulinism, and predisposition to embryonal tumors. One of the molecular etiologies underlying BWS is paternal uniparental isodisomy of chromosome 11p15.5 (pUPD11). About 8% of pUPD11 cases are due to genome-wide paternal uniparental isodisomy (GWpUPD). About 30 cases of live-born patients with GWpUPD have been described, most of whom were mosaic and female. We present male patients with BWS due to GWpUPD, elucidate the

Vitellointestinal duct (VID) anomalies have been described extensively in the literature. However, an everted VID with prolapse of ileum arising from an omphalocele is rare, and its appearance at birth can be alarming and can present a diagnostic challenge. We describe a baby born to a teenage diabetic mother who was noted to have a strange exophytic mass arising from the abdominal wall. Antenatal scans had revealed multiple other malformations but not an omphalocele. He was operated on early, and the diagnosis of a patent VID with prolapse of the ileum arising from an omphalocele was only con

BACKGROUND: Conjoined twins are rare developmental anomalies. There is a paucity of literature other than case reports and small case series. The aim of this study was to examine national outcomes and identify predictors of mortality in newborn conjoined twins.
METHODS: We reviewed data on newborn conjoined twins from the Kids' Inpatient Database (1997-2012).
RESULTS: A total of 240 patients were identified for a nationally weighted incidence of 1 per 100,000 live births. The majority of conjoined twins were female (n = 190 [81%]). The most commonly associated anomalies were cardiac (n = 87

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is an increasingly common congenital abdominal wall defect. Due to advances in neonatal critical care and early surgical management, mortality from gastroschisis and associated complications has decreased to less than 10% in most series. However, it has been recognized that the outcome of gastroschisis has a spectrum and that the disorder affects a heterogeneous cohort of neonates. The goal of this study is to predict morbidity and mortality in neonates with gastroschisis using clinically relevant variables.
METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective observational study o

This case of cleft lip and palate repair by a surgical mission team is common. Low-risk, single-procedure surgical interventions requiring minimal follow-up with substantial quality of life improvement are well suited for this type of mission. However, cleft repair can also be quite complex and require multiple surgeries and other care over time, postoperative surveillance, and speech therapy. These benefits and burdens prompt us to investigate, from clinical and ethical perspectives, whether and when some surgical care is better than none. We argue that, when performing surgical interventions

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies on long-term sequelae of gastroschisis are scarce. The limited data suggest increased abdominal complaints in young children. To provide proper counseling for both parents and patients, more information on long-term outcome is needed. This study aims to evaluate long-term outcome regarding GI function, gastroesophageal reflux (GER), health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and cosmetic satisfaction.
METHODS: An observational longitudinal cohort study was performed. All patients (N = 43) born between 1982 and 2008 with gastroschisis that were admitted to the Universi

Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is a rare multisystemic disease characterized by a deficiency of abdominal wall musculature, urinary tract anomalies and bilateral intra-abdominal testes. PBS in females is called pseudo prune belly syndrome (PPBS) and is characterized by abdominal wall laxity and urinary tract defects. We report three male and one female stillborn piglets with abdominal distension, hypoplastic abdominal wall musculature and urinary tract anomalies. Bilateral cryptorchidism was observed in the males. In addition, two males showed anomalous liver lobulation, one of them had an anomalo

As technology improves and becomes more widely accessible, more subclinical congenital malformations are being detected. Using a cohort of 1,780,156 pregnant women and their offspring nested in the 2000-2013 US Medicaid Analytic eXtract, we contrasted time trends in malformations which do not necessarily present with overt clinical symptoms early in life and are more likely to be diagnosed via imaging (secundum atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, ventricular septal defect, pulmonary artery anomalies, pulmonary valve stenosis, hydrocephalus) with trends in malformations that are unl

BACKGROUND Thoracoschisis is a very rare congenital birth defect defined by the herniation of intra-abdominal organs through a defect in the thoracic wall. Though often associated with other birth defects as a part of the "limb-body wall complex" deformities, thoracoschisis has very rarely been reported as an isolated finding. CASE REPORT Here we present the case of a 30-day-old term male infant with an isolated left thoracoschisis managed successfully by primary closure. The patient was monitored postnatally in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maputo Central Hospital because of the

Background: Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is an often underdiagnosed cause of lower chest wall and abdominal pain. The diagnosis of SRS is established by physical examination with or without dynamic ultrasound. The pain can be debilitating and surgical excision of the nonattached, subluxing cartilages is curative for most patients, but frustratingly, up to a quarter of patients have transient or limited relief and require reoperation. Some of these patients were found to have subluxation of the remaining bony ribs, suggesting that excision of rib cartilage alone may not be curative in a subset o

The most frequent anomaly of the urogenital tract is a simple renal ectopia with one organ lying in the pelvis. Crossed renal ectopia is a less common condition in which the ectopic kidney is located on the opposite side of the midline from the ureteral insertion in the urinary bladder. The cause of both types of renal ectopia is the arrest or failure of the kidney ascent from the pelvic to the lumbar position. Whereas an accelerated ascent leads to a subdiaphragmal or intrathoracic ectopic position, an ectopic ureter can be defined as one that does not drain into the trigonum vesicae. The ect

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In this report, the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) examines and compares gastroschisis and omphalocele for a recent 5-year birth cohort using data from 30 population-based birth defect surveillance programs in the United States.
METHODS: As a special call for data for the 2019 NBDPN Annual Report, state programs reported expanded data on gastroschisis and omphalocele for birth years 2012-2016. We estimated the overall prevalence (per 10,000 live births) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for each defect as well as by maternal race/ethnicity, maternal a
