Impact of praziquantel treatment and early reinfection patterns in a mixed Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium infection focus in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of single versus mixed Schistosoma infections on the efficacy of PZQ treatment as well as on the dynamics of reinfection after treatment. METHODS: We followed 388 randomly selected residents of a village co‑endemic for Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni, screening them for Schistosoma infection every three weeks across a nine‑week period. Kato-Katz stool examination was used to detect eggs of S. mansoni and urine filtration to detect eggs of S. haematobium. At every visit, those who were positive for schistosomiasis were treated with 40mg/kg praziquantel.

"We don't know schistosomiasis can affect the female reproductive system and increase the risk of HIV": A mixed-methods analysis reveals gaps in risk factor determinants and health consequences of female genital schistosomiasis in Southern Chad.

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium infection is a public health problem in Chad. Despite reports of urinary S. haematobium prevalence in endemic communities, research on the genital aspect of the disease, which disproportionately affects women, remains neglected especially given the contemporary geographical overlap with HIV/AIDS. This study was undertaken to establish baseline data on the awareness and perception of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) among community inhabitants and healthcare professionals in southern Chad to inform effective policy dec

Ontogenetic shifts in sound production and shared sonic mechanisms in two priacanthid fishes.

Sound production in teleost fishes relies on diverse anatomical adaptations, yet convergent mechanisms involving extrinsic sonic muscles acting on the swim bladder are widespread. This study investigates the acoustic and morphological features of two priacanthid species, Indo-Pacific glasseye Heteropriacanthus carolinus and moontail bullseye Priacanthus hamrur to explore interspecific similarities in sound production. Using recordings and anatomical analyses, we show that both species rely on a forced-response mechanism, where the contraction rate of fast sonic muscles determines the fundament

A community-based participatory research and community health workers-led health education strategy for schistosomiasis control among schoolchildren in Pemba Island, Zanzibar: a cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains an intractable public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. While mass drug administration (MDA) has been the cornerstone of control, its limited impact on sustained behavioral change and persistent transmission in high-intensity transmission areas underscores the urgent need for complementary strategies. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach led by community health workers (CHWs), compared to conventional health education, in achieving sustainable schistosomiasis control among schoolchildren in

PD-L1 expression in schistosomal granuloma: an immunohistochemical study in urinary bladder schistosomiasis.

AIMS: Schistosomiasis remains endemic in various parts of the world, and insights into pathogen immunobiology are mainly based on experimental models, while studies on human tissues are limited. METHODS: We explored the role of immune checkpoint pathway by evaluating the immunohistochemical expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in a retrospective cohort of patients with bilharzial cystitis. Inflammation severity by conventional histology and staining intensity by immunohistochemistry were assigned three-tier scores (0/1+/2+), and a cut-off for staining percentage was set at 5%. RES

Schistosome Infection is Associated With High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Persistence, Together With Altered Cervicovaginal Microbiota.

Schistosoma haematobium infection may impair female genital mucosal antiviral defense. We sought to determine whether women with S. haematobium infection had higher odds of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) persistence, a prerequisite to cervical cancer. We also examined cervicovaginal dysbiosis, which has been linked to HR-HPV persistence and schistosome infection. In 96 Tanzanian women with baseline and 9- to 12-month follow-up samples, we performed HPV genotyping, schistosome antigen quantification, and 16S rRNA sequencing. Both S. haematobium (odds ratio: 4.7 [1.3-16.5], P = .017) an

Case report: Radiographic and cystoscopic manifestations of chronic urogenital Schistosomiasis in an asymptomatic Zimbabwean man with HIV.

While undergoing evaluation for loss of consciousness and traumatic injuries after a single-vehicle collision, a 55-year-old Zimbabwean man residing in Maryland was incidentally noted to have circumferential bladder wall calcification and thickening on CT imaging. Cystoscopy revealed extensive 'sandy patches', confirmed by histopathology to represent calcified eggs of Schistosoma haematobium. Genitourinary symptoms were absent, ova were not identified on urine microscopy, and serum eosinophil level was normal, consistent with the primary infection having occurred at least 20 years prior. While

Single-Imaging Parasite-Quantification Microfluidic Device for Detection and Analysis of Schistosoma Eggs in Urine.

The accurate diagnosis of schistosomiasis for effective disease surveillance, treatment, and follow-up is crucial to attain the World Health Organization's 2030 goal to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem. The current diagnostic tools for urinary schistosomiasis, including the gold standard urine filtration test, have been reported to show low sensitivity in detecting low-intensity infections, which, when missed, act as reservoirs for infections-an evident gap in endemic areas where preventive chemotherapy reduces infection intensities. This study assessed the laboratory-based

Genetic Diversity and Ecological Distribution of Bulinus Populations in Southern Benin Using PCR-RFLP Analysis.

Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in Benin. Freshwater snails of the genus Bulinus serve as intermediate hosts for schistosomes, trematode parasites responsible for bilharzia. The urinary form, caused by Schistosoma haematobium, is the most prevalent and is primarily transmitted by Bulinus truncatus and Bulinus globosus, whereas the intestinal form, caused by Schistosoma mansoni, is transmitted by Bulinus forskalii. Effective control strategies require an understanding of the molecular diversity and genetic structure of Bulinus populations. Bulinus samples were collected fr

Pseudotumoral Bladder Schistosomiasis in a 16-Year-Old Adolescent: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 16-year-old adolescent from Mali who was admitted for acute macroscopic hematuria. CT urography revealed bladder wall calcifications associated with an endoluminal lesion, and cystoscopy identified a 16-mm polyp. Schistosomal serology was equivocal, while urine parasitology demonstrated nonviable eggs compatible with Schistosoma haematobium. A complete transurethral resection was performed, and histopathological examination revealed calcified eggs within the lamina propria without any signs of malignancy. This case highlights the importance of considering schistosomiasi
