BACKGROUND: Polyparasitic infections remain widespread in endemic regions, yet its contributing factors and health impact are not well understood. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors and examines the effect of polyparasitic infection on haemoglobin levels among children.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lambaréné, Gabon, among children aged 2-17 years from November 2019 to December 2020. Haemoglobin levels, environmental conditions, and sociodemographic data were collected. Stool, urine, and blood samples were analysed using light microscopy for

BACKGROUND: Relating the geographical distribution of intermediate freshwater snail hosts (viz. vectors of schistosomes) to local environmental attributes offers value for understanding the epidemiological landscape of schistosomiasis transmission in a changing aquatic environment. Schistosomiasis-both urogenital and intestinal-causes significant human suffering, affecting approximately 240 million people globally and grouped within the neglected tropical disease (NTD) umbrella. This study addresses the following questions: 1. Where are the most suitable habitats for intermediate host snails i

Urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) caused by zoonotic or hybrid schistosome infection(s) is an emerging public health concern in Malawi, and we describe a 1-year clinical sub-study with 3 inspection time points for female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) upon selecting 86 women with proven UGS. This sub-study was set within a broader 2-year longitudinal 'Hybridization in UroGenital Schistosomiasis (HUGS)' investigation. A detailed cervicovaginal examination with a portable colposcope was conducted, examining cervicovaginal lavage (CVL), cervical swab, cervical biopsy and urine with traditional para

INTRODUCTION: Schistosoma (S.) haematobium is a widespread tropical helminthic zoonosis. Schistosomiasis was endemic in some foci in Southern Europe until the sixties of the last century. Autochthonous transmission of human schistosomiasis was first reported in the French island of Corsica in 2014, and the schistosome responsible for this emergence was also linked to partial hybridisation between S. haematobium and the bovine schistosome species S. bovis. Transmission has recently been retrospectively confirmed in southern Spain as well.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a chronically disabling gynaecological condition, impacting up to 56 million women and girls, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. In lieu of a gold standard laboratory test, it is possible to diagnose FGS visually. Visual diagnosis is performed through inspection of the cervix and surrounding tissue to identify signs of Schistosoma egg deposition, associated inflammation and granuloma formation. The change related to egg deposition can be very subtle and heterogeneous and is often seen in the context of other altered cervical morphology. Visual diagnostics for

Schistosomiasis is an uncommon disease in European countries, such as Poland. However, the rare occurrence of this disease in the modern era, which is characterized by increased opportunities for migration, may start to pose a risk over time due to the diagnosis of this condition in patients who have imported it from its endemic areas. We report the case of a 9-year-old boy of Cameroonian origin who recently resided in Poland and who presented with recurrent hematuria, abdominal pain, and eosinophilia. Persistent symptoms and comprehensive diagnostics revealed Schistosoma haematobium infection

Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease affecting over 250 million people worldwide, relies on praziquantel (PZQ) as its sole treatment. However, PZQ has significant limitations, including inactivity against juvenile worms, inability to prevent reinfection, and emerging drug resistance. In this review, we outline the development of CIDD-0150303, a novel oxamniquine (OXA) derivative with pan-species and pan-stage activity against Schistosoma mansoni, PZQ-resistant S. mansoni, and S. haematobium. Using a structure-guided design approach, over 350 OXA analogs were synthesized and screened t

BACKGROUND: The fight against schistosomiasis (urogenital and intestinal) has prolonged more than expected with more areas that were previously known to have less or no incidence of infection now recording alarming incidence rate. Researchers and stakeholders are now concerned about what is probably sustaining the possible infection, and one of the leading hypotheses is the zoonotic forms of the species playing a major role.
AIM: In Africa, livestock and their owners stay in proximity, thereby bringing together both human and livestock schistosomes. Schistosoma haematobium (human) and Schisto

We present the first nuclear genome sequence and extensive genome-wide transcriptomic data for Bulinus ugandae, a freshwater snail native to the Nile drainage, including Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. B. ugandae belongs to the B. africanus species group within the genus Bulinus (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) and serves as a vector for Schistosoma bovis, the causative agent of schistosomiasis in livestock, but appears to be refractory to S. haematobium which causes human urogenital schistosomiasis. The genome was assembled from PacBio HiFi long reads obtained from a single highly inbred B. ug

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists regarding the current epidemiology of Schistosoma (S.) haematobium infection following decades of mass drug administration implementation in many areas of Burkina Faso, including the Cascades region, which is predominantly a riverine community with a high risk of schistosomiasis. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of S. haematobium infection and microhaematuria among schoolchildren in the municipality of Banfora, southwestern Burkina Faso.
METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in November 2024 among schoolchildr

Urinary schistosomiasis remains endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, yet data on women of reproductive age are limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium infection and to identify associated sociodemographic and exposure-related factors - including employment status - among women attending cervical cancer screening in Eswatini. A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Sithobela Health Centre (Lowveld region) between September and October 2023. Using convenience sampling, 360 women aged 20 - 49 years attending routine screening were enrolled. Socio

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium affects over 100 million people globally, with potential long-term genetic and immunological consequences poorly understood in endemic populations. This study investigates genetic damage and immune dysregulation in infected individuals from a hyperendemic region in Nigeria. OBJECTIVE: To quantify genetic damage markers and characterize immune system alterations in individuals with confirmed S. haematobium infection compared to uninfected controls from Atisbo Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. METHODS: This cross-s

Despite being considered non-endemic for human schistosomiasis, previous studies from India have described at least three endemic foci, with occasional case reports of autochthonous cases and cercarial dermatitis. We report a case of chronic haematuria in a 31-year-old male returning from Malawi due to Schistosoma haematobium.

Schistosomiasis remains a prevalent parasitic disease in tropical and subtropical regions, ranking second to malaria in terms of parasitic burden. The disease manifests in two primary forms: urinary schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma haematobium, and intestinal schistosomiasis, associated with S. mansoni and S. japonicum. This case report describes a 12-year-old female from New Halfa, Sudan, who presented with a progressively enlarging lower abdominal mass. She had a prior history of S. mansoni infection, diagnosed and treated a year earlier. Clinical evaluation revealed a firm, mobile, no

Human schistosomiasis is a zoonotic disease, meaning that wild animals or livestock can serve as reservoirs for the disease. This sustains active parasite transmission in regions where extensive treatment initiatives are underway, potentially undermining efforts to combat schistosomiasis. In multi-host and multi-parasite systems, achieving disease elimination necessitates the incorporation of all reservoir hosts. For this reason, animal diagnosis is crucial to enable accurate targeting of treatment. However, methods for diagnosing animals remain underdeveloped. We have evaluated two commercial

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by trematode parasites of the genus Schistosoma. Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), most often due to S. haematobium, is underdiagnosed and rarely involves the vulva. Its nonspecific manifestations frequently cause misdiagnosis in resource-limited settings. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 27-year-old multiparous Somali woman with an 11-month history of recurrent vulvar itching, persistent lesions, dyspareunia, and vaginal discharge. She was initially misdiagnosed with vaginal candidiasis without improvement. Examination revea

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis in Africa is an ongoing public health problem that is caused by two major human species, Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, which often cause concurrent infections. Due to the global goal of controlling or eliminating schistosomiasis as a public health problem, the issue of diagnostic sensitivity has become more critical in the assessment of program success. In that regard, the World Health Organization (WHO) has drawn attention to the need for field-applicable tests with high specificity and sensitivity.
METHODS: To address this, we have evaluated the amplifi
