Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in Benin. Freshwater snails of the genus Bulinus serve as intermediate hosts for schistosomes, trematode parasites responsible for bilharzia. The urinary form, caused by Schistosoma haematobium, is the most prevalent and is primarily transmitted by Bulinus truncatus and Bulinus globosus, whereas the intestinal form, caused by Schistosoma mansoni, is transmitted by Bulinus forskalii. Effective control strategies require an understanding of the molecular diversity and genetic structure of Bulinus populations. Bulinus samples were collected fr

We report the case of a 16-year-old adolescent from Mali who was admitted for acute macroscopic hematuria. CT urography revealed bladder wall calcifications associated with an endoluminal lesion, and cystoscopy identified a 16-mm polyp. Schistosomal serology was equivocal, while urine parasitology demonstrated nonviable eggs compatible with Schistosoma haematobium. A complete transurethral resection was performed, and histopathological examination revealed calcified eggs within the lamina propria without any signs of malignancy. This case highlights the importance of considering schistosomiasi

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis (SCH) are significant public health concerns in Tanzania, known to impair cognitive and physical development in young children. To effectively guide control programs, a comprehensive understanding of their current prevalence and intensity is essential. This cross-sectional study was aimed at determining the prevalence and intensity of STH and SCH infections and associated anemia among preschool children aged 12-59 months across seven agroecological zones in Tanzania. A total of 1612 children were examined using the Kato-Katz technique for S

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma spp. are trematodes occurring in tropical endemic areas but can be imported to non-endemic regions as causes of travel-associated infections. In this study, two pan-trematode-specific real-time PCR assays were evaluated for their diagnostic sensitivity in detecting Schistosoma spp. DNA in diagnostic human samples.
METHODS: Two previously described pan-trematode-specific real-time PCR assays were comparatively assessed using diagnostic samples containing DNA of either the S. haematobium complex or the S. mansoni complex, as confirmed by Schistosoma species complex-speci

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Urinary schistosomiasis has remained one of the most important public health issues in Sudan, especially in regions like Gezira State, which relies on irrigation schemes. Despite control activities, morbidity from schistosomiasis in these regions remains a challenge, therefore updated prevalence data are important for proper planning of control strategies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and associated socio-demographic and behavioral risk factors of urinary schistosomiasis among individuals attending healthcare facilities in Al Managil, Gezira

Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in Nigeria. We molecularly characterized Schistosoma eggs obtained from human urine to identify species and assess the presence of hybrid schistosomes in Abuja, Nigeria. Urine samples were collected from 1887 participants aged five years and above. Samples were examined for Schistosoma eggs using light microscopy. A total of 507 (26.9%) were positive for any form of Schistosoma while 91 (4.8%) had atypical Schistosoma eggs. DNA extracted from pooled ova was analyzed using metagenomic sequencing, read mapping, phylogenetic analysis, and BLAS

Chronic urinary schistosomiasis is an important cause of hematuria and genitourinary morbidity in individuals from endemic regions. In advanced disease, computed tomography (CT) may show circumferential calcification of the bladder and distal ureters, a classic pattern that can suggest the diagnosis even when laboratory tests are negative. A 38-year-old man from Mozambique, living in Portugal with human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B virus infections, presented with 2 months of painless gross hematuria. He denied dysuria, fever, flank pain, weight loss, prior urinary tract instrumentat

BACKGROUND: Accurate and accessible point-of-care testing for urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) is vital for control and prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. Point-of-care (POC) rapid diagnostic tests with high sensitivity for both high and low parasite burdens have been developed. These tests need to be assessed for their applicability in poorly resourced UGS-endemic areas so that control programs can be initiated, and improved screening and routine diagnosis can be implemented.
METHODS: This diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) review evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of eligible field-based

BACKGROUND: The efficient management of schistosomiasis depends on the rapid and accurate diagnosis of infection. Rapid diagnostic tests are essential for identifying morbidity markers of urogenital schistosomiasis.
METHODS: A total of 1,341 urine samples collected from school-age pupils in Kwara State were screened for Schistosoma haematobium eggs using the syringe filtration method. Haematuria and proteinuria were assessed using commercial urine rea-gent strips (Medi-Test Combur-9).
RESULTS: Overall, 277 paticipants were infected, of which children >15 yr accounted for 37.5% of the disease

Schistosomiasis in Yemen, caused by Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, persists as a focal public health problem despite decades of control based largely on repeated praziquantel (PZQ)-based mass drug administration (MDA). This review synthesizes epidemiological, malacological, clinical, and programmatic evidence to examine why substantial national prevalence reductions have not culminated in sustained progress toward elimination. The evidence indicates a shift from broad endemicity toward geographically uneven persistence and possible resurgence, particularly where unsafe freshwater expo

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease, with the highest burden in Sub-Saharan Africa, predominantly due to Schistosoma haematobium. Testicular involvement is rare; fewer than 30 cases have been reported in the literature to date, though sporadic reports continue to emerge from endemic areas. We report the case of a 34-year-old school teacher from Kano, Nigeria, with a history of freshwater exposure and childhood schistosomiasis treated with praziquantel. He presented with a two-year history of a firm, progressively enlarging left hemi-scrotal mass. Clinical examination and scrotal ul

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) are targeted for elimination as public health problems (EPHP) in Zimbabwe by 2030. A 2018 impact survey demonstrated prevalence below EPHP thresholds following seven rounds of annual preventive chemotherapy (PC). However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a three-year suspension of PC. We conducted a nationwide geostatistical impact assessment to estimate prevalence at ward-level and evaluated impact of PC interruption relative to 2018 results using a quasi-experimental design.
METHODS: The cross-sectional survey in 2021 targeted

BACKGROUND: Current strategies aim to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem globally by 2030. As this target approaches, up-to-date knowledge of the burden and distribution of schistosomiasis is crucial. After a decade of control measures in Ethiopia, there are currently no high-resolution data with which to evaluate progress and guide interventions. Through a nationwide survey, we aimed to map the fine-scale distribution of schistosomiasis in Ethiopia to guide programmatic decision making at the kebele (subdistrict) level.
METHODS: This cross-sectional geostatistical survey wa

Background/Objectives: Schistosomiasis affects about 250 million people globally, including an estimated 40 million women of reproductive age and over 10 million pregnant women each year. Praziquantel is a key component of schistosomiasis control and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for use during pregnancy; nevertheless, its use is uneven due to ongoing safety concerns. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes evidence from randomized controlled trials (with the strongest evidence for the second and third trimesters), observational studies (including limited first-trime

BACKGROUND: Monitoring the impact of schistosomiasis mass drug administration (MDA) relies mainly on human sampling, which is resource intensive and raises ethical and logistical challenges. Xenomonitoring of intermediate host snails offers a non-invasive alternative; however, its utility for program evaluation in Ghana remains unexplored.
METHODS: We conducted longitudinal snail sampling at 31 human-water contact points along Weija Lake, Ghana, 1 month before and at five time points up to 18 months after two rounds of community-wide praziquantel MDA. Snails were identified morphologically, e

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, a debilitating parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma species, poses significant public health challenges in tropical regions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. There is growing evidence of species hybridization which may affect transmission dynamics, host range, and treatment resistance and hamper effective control strategies. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of Schistosoma bovis and Schistosoma haematobium hybrids in endemic communities in Ghana.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with urine samples collected from 840 s

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are serious public health issues in Gabon, but current community-level data are limited and most evidence comes from schools. This study aimed to address this gap by assessing the prevalence, infection intensity, and associated risk factors of schistosomiasis and STH in communities of south-eastern Gabon. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 683 participants from several communities. The Kato–Katz and urine filtration methods were used to analyze stool and urine samples. Statistical analyses included proportion tests, Kruskal–Wal

BACKGROUND: The Zanzibar islands have implemented mass drug administration (MDA) with praziquantel against Schistosoma haematobium infections since the 2000s, achieving elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem in most areas. However, a few hotspots with high prevalence of infection remain, where MDA-driven selection of drug-resistance within the S. haematobium populations might contribute to persistent transmission. Recent advances in understanding the molecular basis of praziquantel action on the Schistosoma transient receptor potential ion channel (TRPMPZQ) now facilitate sc

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is linked to serious reproductive health complications. In southwest Cameroon, girls and women living in areas endemic for urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) face a high risk of undiagnosed FGS. This study aimed to identify probable cases of FGS by conducting syndromic screening, to administer pre-emptive treatment with praziquantel (PZQ) in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines in the Ikange community, Tiko Health District (THD), Cameroon. Adolescent girls and women of reproductive. (WRA) age (15–54 years) residing in Ikange were invited
