Nuclear Intron Sequence Variation of the Bulinus globosus Complex (Mollusca: Planorbidae): Implications for Molecular Systematic Analyses.

Urinary schistosomiasis is caused by the blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium, which is predominantly found in Africa. The freshwater snail Bulinus globosus is its main intermediate host. The species that make up the B. globosus group are genetically complex, and their taxonomic status remains controversial. Genetic variation, heterozygosity, and DNA recombination in B. globosus were examined using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and the intron 3 region of the arginine kinase gene (AkInt3). A total of 81 B. globosus snails were collected from three different localities in

Effectiveness of a timed praziquantel treatment of school children in relation to seasonal transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis in Northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Regular mass drug administration of praziquantel has a positive impact on reducing the burden of human schistosomiasis, however transmission still persists in many areas. To reach disease elimination; tailored interventions are needed to not only further reduce infections but also to tackle areas of persistent high prevalences of infection. One proposed approach is timed treatment based on the natural disease transmission cycle in relation to seasons. This study assessed the effectiveness of timed praziquantel treatment in a seasonal transmission foci of S. haematobium in northwest

Female genital schistosomiasis: Addressing diagnostic and programmatic gaps to advance elimination efforts.

This report underscores the critical need to include Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) within schistosomiasis elimination frameworks and sexual and reproductive health programs. Affecting an estimated 40-56 million women, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, FGS is often underdiagnosed and neglected in public health programs. This paper highlights FGS as a vital gap in schistosomiasis control and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, advocating for integrated approaches that address FGS awareness and diagnosis within disease elimination initiatives and health services. Enhanced di

Unravelling selectivity discrepancies of protoporphyrin binding to glutathione transferase: A comparative analysis of molecular dynamic simulated versus implicit solvent-minimized protein models.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic trematodes, which are an ongoing global health and veterinary concern owing to their acquired drug resistance pressure to available treatment. There is a need for a new generation of effective anthelmintics for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Natural products, such as porphyrins, have been reported to inhibit the main detoxification enzymes in these parasites, called glutathione transferases, which help them evade immune response and drug therapy, thus making them good drug targets. Computational modelling was used to scr

Human schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by infection with blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. Widely distributed in the Middle East, southeast Asia, Latin America, and (mostly) sub-Saharan Africa, schistosomiasis is acquired upon skin penetration of infective larvae released by freshwater snails. Acute infection might present with self-limiting hypersensitivity reactions (known as Katayama fever). Chronic infection typically leads to two main clinical patterns: intestinal or urogenital schistosomiasis, depending on the infecting species. Impairment of other body sites (eg, th

Seasonal distribution and cercarial shedding of Bulinus spp. snails: Implications for urogenital schistosomiasis control in the Simiyu Region, northwestern Tanzania.

Urogenital schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease of significant public health concern caused by the trematode species Schistosoma haematobium. Its transmission is localised and heterogeneous, with seasonal occurrences in Tanzania primarily facilitated by Bulinus spp. snails, which serve as intermediate hosts. To plan effective, data-driven control measures, it is crucial to understand the epidemiology of schistosomes in these snails. This study aimed to investigate the seasonal distribution, abundance, and Schistosoma spp. infections (assessed via cercarial emergence) in Bulinus spp.

Description of four cases of male genital schistosomiasis (MGS) in children and adolescents, with a scoping review.

We present four cases of male genital schistosomiasis (MGS) within children and adolescents opportunistically encountered as part of a wider screening programme for imported schistosomiasis in Germany and community outreach screening in Mali. Such genital manifestations in young children and adolescents are often overlooked but can include hydrocele, hypogonadism, varicocele, cutaneous granulomata on the penis and scrotum, echogenic spots in the prostate and the epididymis, alongside testicular masses. Though these cases appear sporadic, from our scoping literature review, they draw fresh atte

The burden of visually diagnosed female genital schistosomiasis among women with infertility in the Volta Region of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is the outcome of the deposition of Schistosoma haematobium egg in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus or cervix of women in schistosomiasis endemic areas. Chronic and untreated FGS can result in an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition and infertility. This study aimed to evaluate the burden of visual FGS among women with infertility in the Volta region of Ghana. METHODS: This study was a comparative cross-sectional study involving women with infertility defined as women with inability to achieve pregnancy after 12

A pilot investigation of bovine schistosomiasis on Unguja Island, Zanzibar, raises a new concern for elimination of urogenital schistosomiasis.

Our pilot parasitological investigation of cattle, supplemented with molecular DNA characterisation of encountered schistosomes, sheds first light upon bovine schistosomiasis on Unguja Island, Zanzibar. During February 2024, a total of 99 cattle were examined. Of these, 47 were exported animals from the Tanzanian mainland, designated for slaughter at two governmental abattoirs (Kisakasaka and Muwanda), and 52 were free-grazing animals sampled from four grazing locations within the island's North and West-B regions. Upon visual inspection of 31 cattle carcasses at Kisakasaka for adult worms, th

Urogenital Schistosomiasis Mimicking IgG4-RD in a Patient With HIV.

This article reports a case of urogenital schistosomiasis mimicking IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) in a 47-year-old immunocompromised man with HIV. Initially diagnosed with IgG4-RD, further biopsies revealed schistosoma eggs. Elevated IgG4 levels indicated a Th2 immune response, highlighting its complex role in antischistosomal immunity and the need for careful differential diagnosis.

Point-of-care ultrasound reveals extensive pathology in Gabonese preschool-age children with urogenital schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: Historically, urinary tract pathology caused by S. haematobium infection was thought to affect predominantly school-age children (SAC) and adults. Increasing availability of ultrasound data from endemic areas demonstrates that even younger children develop potentially irreversible pathology. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Point-of-care ultrasound for urinary schistosomiasis and urine microscopy were performed across age groups in 105 patients with symptomatic urogenital schistosomiasis in Lambaréné, Gabon. Of 96 ultrasound scans with sufficient image quality, bladder wall thicken

Genomic data reveal a north-south split and introgression history of blood fluke populations across Africa.

The human parasitic fluke, Schistosoma haematobium hybridizes with the livestock parasite S. bovis in the laboratory, but the frequency of hybridization in nature is unclear. Here, we analyze 34.6 million single nucleotide variants in 162 samples from 18 African countries, revealing a sharp genetic discontinuity between northern and southern S. haematobium. We find no evidence for recent hybridization. Instead the data reveal admixture events that occurred 257-879 generations ago in northern S. haematobium populations. Fifteen introgressed S. bovis genes are approaching fixation in northern S.
