BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, a major neglected tropical disease, is caused by Schistosoma spp. It is estimated that more than 200 million people are affected worldwide, mostly in Africa. The gold standard diagnosis of urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) is the microscopic visualisation of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in concentrated urine; however, its sensitivity is low. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of molecular and serological testing for imported UGS screening in asymptomatic sub-Saharan migrants in a non-endemic setting.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study betwee

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends conducting a baseline survey to quantify the infection burden of schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH) in pre-school aged children (PSAC) and school-aged children (SAC) before implementing a schistosomiasis mass drug administration intervention. The objective of the study was to compare the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections between preschool-aged children (PSAC) and school-age children (SAC) in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The study was conducted in the provinc

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a disease of poverty. Integrated interventions are recommended for its elimination. Despite major prevalence reductions over the past decades, hotspot areas with persistent or recurring moderate or high prevalence remain. We aimed to assess the contribution of multidisciplinary interventions that were adapted to the local micro-epidemiology for schistosomiasis elimination in Pemba, Tanzania, and to identify drivers for the occurrence of hotspot areas.
METHODOLOGY: From 2020 to 2024, annual cross-sectional surveys were conducted in schools and communities in 20 i

Traditional serological diagnosis can be invasive and uncomfortable, potentially discouraging patients, especially women and children, from seeking diagnosis and treatment. In resource-limited, endemic regions, non-invasive diagnostic approaches are highly desirable. This study investigated the potential of urine-based ELISA using Schistosoma haematobium soluble egg-based (Sh-SEA) and worm antigen protein (Sh-WAP) for diagnosing urogenital schistosomiasis. Urine samples were disaggregated into three groups; 50 laboratory-confirmed S. haematobium-positive individuals, 50 S. haematobium-negative

Schistosomiasis is a significant public health threat in many regions of Ghana. Due to the abundance of freshwater bodies that serve as a breeding ground for the parasites and their intermediate hosts, the Pru East District is one of the high-risk areas for this disease. This study aims to assess the prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis and risk factors among school-aged children in the Pru East district of Ghana. A cross-sectional study recruited 452 schoolchildren randomly selected from the Basic Schools in the district between Nov. 2023 and Oct. 2024. A questionnaire was used to obtain

BACKGROUND: In the absence of an active schistosomiasis control programme, the affected community is vulnerable to complications such as female genital schistosomiasis. Research has shown that female genital schistosomiasis is a challenge faced by many African women including those from South Africa. Since 2008, the South African National Department of Health has been trying to resuscitate the schistosomiasis control programme; the programme has not been fully established or implemented. However, there are some surveillance best practices that the country can institutionalise to improve contro

Schistosomiasis is tropical/sub-tropical infectious disease commonly seen in areas with sub-optimal access to clean water. Schistosomiasis usually involves urinary bladder and large bowel causing hematuria and bloody stool, respectively. However, testicular schistosomiasis is extremely rare. Testicular schistosomiasis commonly present as testicular mass which resembles testicular cancer. So far, there are no radiologic investigations to help distinguish between testicular cancers and testicular schistosomiasis, which is why most patients with testicular schistosomiasis undergo unnecessary orch

BACKGROUND: Protozoa and helminths cause significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where an accurate understanding of their epidemiological profile is needed to improve their control. In Gabon, a country endemic for a diverse range of both helminths and protozoa, epidemiological data for protozoa are lacking, whereas updated data for helminths are needed. This study aimed to describe the distribution of helminth and protozoan infections in the Moyen-Ogooué province of Gabon.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included individuals aged one year and

Schistosomiasis remains a major global public health challenge. Bulinus serves as an intermediate host for Schistosoma, including S. haematobium, S. intercalatum, and S. guineensis. Emerging evidence suggests that temperature fluctuations associated with global climate change are key factors influencing the survival and distribution of Bulinus. The ecological shifts in intermediate host snails may significantly influence schistosomiasis transmission dynamics, thereby exacerbating threats to human health. However, the physiological effects of temperature stress on the survival of B. globosus at

INTRODUCTION: Praziquantel (PZQ) is commonly used to treat schistosomiasis; however, there is considerable interindividual variability in its efficacy, partly because of genetic variation. Data on this relationship is scarce across Africa - where schistosomiasis is prevalent. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenetic relationship between PZQ and its metabolites in a Zimbabwean population infected with Schistosoma haematobium by leveraging dried blood spots (DBS) and mass spectrometry (MS).
METHODS: DBS were obtained from 38 Zimbabwean participants

In 2022 the World Health Organization (WHO) issued guidelines with key interventions to control and eliminate schistosomiasis in endemic countries. In Malawi, whilst praziquantel Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaigns have been ongoing for over a decade, implementation of other interventions have not been formally assessed. To help formulation of an integrated country-specific control strategy, we assessed the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) and infection prevalences in two representative rural communities in Mangochi and Nsanje Districts. Longitudinal cross-sectional community-base

Malaria and schistosomiasis are two of the most clinically important human parasitic diseases in terms of morbidity and mortality, collectively causing approximately 800,000 deaths annually. Coinfection with their causative parasites, Plasmodium spp. and Schistosoma spp., is common, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. These parasites may interact with each other via their effects on the host immune system, but studies to date report conflicting consequences of such interactions, some suggesting that schistosomes are associated with reduced parasitaemia in malaria infection while others report

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis persists as a public health problem in Hadhramout, the largest governorate in the eastern part of Yemen. Despite its endemicity, epidemiological patterns in many districts remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with schistosomiasis among schoolchildren in the Amd District of Hadhramout Valley.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 380 schoolchildren aged 6-16 years. Data on the children's sociodemographic characteristics, infection-related behaviors, and environmental factors were collected using

In Africa, female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) damages women's health. In Cameroon, diagnosis is rare and healthcare workers lack knowledge. Clinicians can be trained to identify FGS lesions, but the accuracy is uncertain. We assessed the acceptability and feasibility of FGS screening in Cameroon's East Province by comparing static HIV clinics and mobile pop-up clinics through consultations and acceptance rates, guided by precise disease mapping. A clinician was remotely trained to diagnose FGS lesions, with success measured by expert comparison using cervix images. The proportion of FGS was

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a chronic disease manifestation of the waterborne parasitic infection Schistosoma haematobium that affects up to 56 million women and girls, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa. Starting from early childhood, this stigmatizing gynaecological condition is caused by the presence of Schistosoma eggs and associated toxins within the genital tract. Schistosoma haematobium typically causes debilitating urogenital symptoms, mostly as a consequence of inflammation, which includes bleeding, discharge and lower abdominal pelvic pain. Chronic complications of FGS i

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a major public health problem in Ghana, significantly impacted by the construction of dams during the 1960s that resulted in the creation of Lake Volta. The Ghana Health Service launched the Neglected Tropical Disease program in 2008, expanding baseline disease mapping first initiated in 2007 to additional geographic areas in 2008 and 2010 and simultaneously rolling out mass drug administration (MDA). Significant reduction of infection across the country was noted in 2015 during the first impact assessment, following five years of MDA. After another five years of

Male genital schistosomiasis (MGS), a gender-specific manifestation of urogenital schistosomiasis and neglected tropical disease, typically results from the entrapment of Schistosoma haematobium eggs within the male genital tract. Across the world, there are no current and accurate estimates of the burden of MGS, due to disease underreporting primarily from diagnostic challenges and a lack of general awareness within the health system. Diagnostic methods for MGS are extremely limited. Conventionally, semen microscopy for Schistosoma ova is used though this technique suffers from low sensitivit

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection prevalent mainly in tropical and subtropical countries. We report a case of urinary infection caused by Schistosoma haematobium in a 16 years-old boy from Mali presented to our Institution with a one-month history of gross hematuria. The physical examination revealed an apparently healthy patient with soft abdomen, treatable, but painful to palpation and otherwise no other significant symptoms. The blood tests were within normal range except for eosinophilia. Urinary ultrasound revealed mild bilateral renal pelvis dilation, and distended bladder with th

BACKGROUND: Therapy of acute schistosomiasis in travellers currently relies on poorly consistent combinations of corticosteroids and praziquantel. In a cluster of travellers recently infected with Schistosoma mattheei × Schistosoma haematobium hybrids during a trip to South Africa in 2017, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of short methylprednisolone cycles to suppress early symptoms and of a single-day praziquantel/methylprednisolone administration at well-defined time lapses.
METHODS: Symptomatic patients seen during the early phase, 4 to 5 weeks (week 4-5) after infection, were given or

SUMMARYSchistosomiasis occurs in 80 primarily tropical and subtropical countries. It is transmitted to humans and animals by Schistosoma cercariae during freshwater contact. Parasite stages adapt and switch between molluscs, water, and mammals, where worms sustain parasitism. We reviewed research on larvae encountering humans published in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science until May 2024. Larvae perform intermittent active/tail-first and passive/body-first swimming with arc-like re-encountering upon host approaches. Skin contacts occur spontaneously or through stimulants.
