The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is the most severe type of congenital ichthyosis. It is extremely rare with very few cases reported in India. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. The importance of antenatal diagnosis by ultrasonography, DNA-based molecular studies on chorionic villus sampling, and amniocentesis has been emphasized. We report a new case of HI in an infant, diagnosed postnatally by correlation of clinical and histopathological features on skin biopsy. The infant succumbed on the second day of birth despite intensive supportive care. A short review of the literature regar

Harlequin ichthyosis is a rare autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis with a distinct phenotypic appearance. It associated with a high mortality rate and affects both sexes equally. We report a harlequin fetus with a history of scalp psoriasis in his mother. The neonate was born to consanguineous parents who had a previous female baby that was diagnosed with harlequin ichthyosis.

Harlequin Ichthyosis (HI) is a dreadful skin disorder with steady rise of cases with prolonged survival. Harlequin fetus follows an autosomal recessive pattern with the incidence of 1in 300,000 live births. In the succeeding case report, a male child was born with keratinized and kaleidoscopic diamond pattern of skin suggestive of HI. He was born at 36th week of gestation from consanguineous marriage. The newborn remained under extensive intensive care in a tertiary care unit where he breathed his last on 11th day after birth. Prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling is of vital importance du

The paper describes a skin morphological examination using an immunohistochemical study (Ki-67, cytokeratin (CK) 5/6, and CK LMW) in a dead 4-month-old girl with congenital ichthyosis (Harlequin ichthyosis (HI)). There is impaired proliferative activity, abnormalities in epidermal differentiation with abnormal CK LMW synthesis, and those in the differentiation of the skin appendages. There are also pronounced sclerotic changes with a predominance of reticulin fibers, derma, and its vessels. The patient with HI and trichoepithelioma is noted to have the similar immunohistochemical phenotype of

Harlequin Ichthyosis (HI) is an extremely rare genetic skin disorder. It is the most severe type of ichthyosis. It is characterized by thickened, dry, rough and armor like plates of skin with deep cracks in between. Alternative names for HI include- keratosis diffusafetalis, ichthyosis congenital, icthyosis fetalis, harlequin fetus and icthyosis congenital gravior. It is an autosomal recessive disorder with the majority of affected individuals being homozygous for mutation in the ABCA 12 gene. This condition presents with a wide range of severity and symptoms. Affected neonates usually do not

We report 4 cases of Harlequin ichthyosis, which is a rare and severe congenital ichthyosis involving the face. Facial appearance consists in severe ectropion, conjonctival edema, eclabium, flattened ears, broadened nose and large, thick, plate-like skin scales. Recent advances in neonatal care have been made, such as retinoid therapy, and have led to an increased survival rate. Early surgical correction of ectropion may be required because of ocular complications.

Neu-Laxova syndrome is a rare, lethal, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, central nervous system anomalies, skin findings, such as ichthyosis, edema, collodion baby and harlequin fetus, facial dysmorphic features, limb anomalies and genital hypoplasia. Although it is generally a lethal condition, cases of such patients who lived beyond 6 months and 10 months of age have been reported. Here, we describe an 8-year-old boy who was born with collodion membrane, facial dysmorphic features, limb anomalies, genital hypoplasia and pachygyria. He had no major

Harlequin fetus is a rare and the most severe form of the congenital ichthyosis with an autosomal recessive inheritance. Incidence of the disease is nearly 1 in 3,00,000 live births. The disease might be lethal at birth and the affected babies are often premature. Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is marked by severe keratinized and alligator-like horned skin. The present study reports a new case with HI and adds to the collective knowledge of this rare skin disorder. HI has been linked to mutation in the ABCA12 gene; therefore, genetic counseling and mutation screening of this gene should be consider

Harlequin ichthyosis is a rare and the most severe form of congenital ichthyosis. Although prenatal diagnosis isdifficult for this disorder, recently, this obstacle has markedly improved with the use of DNA-based prenataldiagnosis. Here in, we presented a neonate with harlequin ichthyosis born by assisted reproductive technology(ART). In this case, the diagnosis of harlequin ichthyosis was not established by conventional prenatal screening.

BACKGROUND: Ichthyosis is an infrequent clinical entity worldwide (1:300,000 births). When diagnosed in a newborn, two forms can be identified: collodion baby and its most severe form, harlequin fetus or maligna keratoma. In both cases, clinical manifestations are thick and hard skin with deep splits. The splits are more prominent in the flexion areas.
CASE: We report a case of a 4- day-old baby who was referred to JNMC Eye OPD by the Pediatric Department of the JNMC. He was having severe bilateral ectropion of the upper lids and chemosis of conjuntiva, without corneal involvement. There was

Harlequin fetus is a rare and mostly fatal form of congenital ichthyosis that can be diagnosed by fetal skin biopsy in patients with a family history of the disease. More recently DNA analysis of amniocentesis and chorion villus sampling materials have also been utilized. We report a case of prenatally diagnosed congenital ichthyosis with no previous family history. Diagnosis was mainly achieved by 3D and 4D ultrasonography findings such as diffuse scaling of the skin, digital contractures, flattened rudimentary external ear, nasal hypoplasia, everted eyelids, typical fish mouth appearance, ma

Collodion baby is a rare keratinizing congenital disorder. Although it is milder in degree than harlequin fetus, the infant is at risk for increased water loss, thermal instability, percutaneous toxicity, and infection as a result of an impaired skin barrier function. Here we report on an 11 days-old collodion baby with hypernatremic dehydratation, septicemia and congenital hypothyroidism. To our knowledge congenital hypothyroidism associated with collodion baby is reported in only one case up to date.

Harlequin fetus, with an incidence of about 1 in 300.000 births, is an extremely severe form of congenital ichtyosis. We report a case of malignant keratoma: a male infant was born at 40 weeks' gestational age. The parents were first cousins. This infant was covered with massive thick, waxy, plate-like scales and deep fissures. There was striking facial distortion including severe eclabium and ectropion. The baby was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit but he died at 2 days of age. There is limited information regarding the course and prognosis of neonates affected with Harlequin i

Ichthyosis is a very heterogeneous family of skin disorders with harlequin ichthyosis being the most severe genetic form. It is a rare autosomal recessive condition, characterized by dry, severely thickened skin with large plates of hyperkeratotic scale, separated by deep fissures. Infants are very susceptible to metabolic abnormalities and infections. They usually do not survive for very long, but several long term survivals have been noted. The vast majority of affected individuals are homozygous for mutations in the ABCA12 gene, which cause a deficiency of the epidermal lipid transporter, r

The development of the human skin from intrauterine to extrauterine life is a balletic interplay of maturing layers and interlocking structures. We discuss this transition and then branch out to touch on issues of premature infant as well as neonatal skin care. Disruption of the barrier function due to toxins and development errors are expounded upon. Staph scalded skin syndrome, collodion membrane, bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, autosomal recessive ichthyosis (lamellar and congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma), and harlequin fetus are used as examples of these disruptions. We describe a stillborn female with joint contractures, subcutaneous oedema, ectropion, a severely flattened nose, an 'O' shaped open mouth and extensive peeling of skin. The head circumference was normal. She was born at 33 weeks of gestation to consanguineous parents, who had one previous offspring affected with non-immune hydrops fetalis. Pathological, radiological and prenatal findings are reported. The features of the present case are compared with those of Neu-Laxova syndrome, restrictive dermopathy and harlequin fetus.

UNLABELLED: Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz is an herbal plant with distinctive medicinal properties which have been used in Ayurvedic treatments for several diseases. This study explored the preliminary antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antibacterial activities of R. nasutus rhizomes using both in vitro and computational docking methods. R. nasutus rhizomes were sequentially extracted using n-hexane (HRN), chloroform (CRN), and methanol (MRN). These fractions were analysed for total phenolic and flavonoid content. Antioxidant capacity was measured via phosphomolybdate and DPPH scavenging assays,

We report a case of harlequin fetus. This very rare cutaneous malformation is a severe form of congenital ichthyosis. This disorder is due to an inborn error of epidermal keratinization. Malformations of ears, nose, and hypoplasia of fingers or nails are seen. This affection is most often lethal.
