Cancer Treatment During Pregnancy and Maternal and Infant Outcomes: A Descriptive Cohort Study Using a Japanese Claims Database.

PURPOSE: To characterize cancer treatment during pregnancy and maternal and infant outcomes among women with cancer identified during pregnancy in Japan. METHODS: In this descriptive cohort study, we used mother-infant linkage data from the JMDC claims database from 2005 to 2024. Live-birth pregnancies were considered eligible when a malignant neoplasm (ICD-10 C00-C97) was recorded between the estimated pregnancy onset and delivery. Exposure was defined as at least one anticancer agent prescribed between the diagnosis and delivery; surgery and radiation therapy were also identified. The outco

Isolated supernumerary nipple along embryonic milk line in an adult male patient successfully treated by surgical excision: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Supernumerary nipples are the most common congenital anomaly of the mammary ridge, resulting from incomplete regression of the embryonic milk line. Most cases are asymptomatic and managed conservatively; surgical excision is reserved for cosmetic concerns, psychological distress, symptomatic lesions, or diagnostic uncertainty. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old Nepali male presented with an accessory nipple-areolar complex on the right chest, which had been present since childhood. Although asymptomatic, it caused significant cosmetic dissatisfaction and self-consci

Fibrocystic disease within an axillary accessory breast (Kajava class IV): a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Accessory breast tissue is a congenital anomaly occurring in 0.4-6% of the population, most commonly in the axilla. While this tissue is subject to the same physiological and pathological changes as orthotopic breast tissue, fibrocystic disease presenting as a large axillary mass is rare, representing a diagnostic challenge that mimics lipomas and other conditions common in the axillary region. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of 33-year-old female who presented with a chronic painful mass in the left axilla that have been present for 10 years. Clinical examination revealed a

Androgen insensitivity syndrome: A case report.

RATIONALE: 46, XY disorder of sex development (46, XY DSD) is relatively rare and frequently missed in clinical practice, necessitating early standardized diagnosis and treatment. Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), a major subtype, should be considered in phenotypic females with suggestive clinical clues. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 29-year-old phenotypic female presented with primary amenorrhea and intermittent abdominal pain. Examination revealed normal breast development, sparse pubic hair, and female external genitalia. Pelvic ultrasonography and CT showed an absent uterus and ovaries, with b

Cystic Neutrophilic Granulomatous Mastitis in Accessory Breast Tissue: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis (CNGM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease characterized by granulomatous inflammation with cystic spaces and neutrophilic infiltration. CNGM involving accessory breast tissue is exceptionally uncommon and has only rarely been reported. Due to its nonspecific clinical manifestations, CNGM may be misdiagnosed, potentially resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old woman presented with swelling and pain in the right axillary region. Ultrasonography revealed an inflammatory lesion within accessory breast

Postnatal Cytomegalovirus Infection in Preterm Infants ≤28 Weeks: Maternal IgG Effector Function, Risk Factors, Viral Kinetics in Relation to Symptom Onset, and Clinical Outcomes in a Prospective Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal cytomegalovirus (pCMV) infection is a major concern in extremely preterm infants. However, the clinical and maternal immunological factors involved in pCMV transmission and related manifestations remain unclear. METHODS: This multicenter prospective cohort study included infants born at ≤28 weeks of gestation. Urine samples were collected within 13 days of life to exclude congenital CMV infection. Serial urine, blood, and breast milk were tested biweekly for CMV load. Maternal serum and breast milk were analyzed for CMV-specific antibodies, IgG subclasses, neutralizing a

Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Bone Metastasis From Accessory Breast Cancer Using HER2 PET/CT: A Case Report.

We presented the imaging findings of 18 F-FDG and 68 Ga-HER2 affibody PET/CT in a 52-year-old woman with HER2-positive accessory breast cancer in the right axilla. 18 F-FDG and HER2 PET/CT showed avid uptake of multiple axillary lesions. HER2 PET/CT identified extensive bone metastases with intense uptake, while the ⁹⁹ᵐTc-MDP whole bone scan was negative, and only a few bone lesions with mild tracer uptake were detected by 18 F-FDG PET/CT. Following 6 cycles of the TCbHP regimen, the axillary lesions markedly reduced. This case demonstrates that HER2 PET/CT enables more sensitive detection of

A nipple-like lesion: A case report of leiomyosarcoma on the back.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the skin is a rare malignant neoplasm that can have varied clinical presentations, even mimicking benign lesions, making diagnosis challenging. We describe a 74-year-old male with a history of subcutaneous LMS of the left leg treated successfully with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation over 10 years prior, who presented with an incidental papule on the lower back resembling an accessory nipple. Biopsy revealed a spindle cell tumour with diffuse smooth muscle actin and desmin positivity and a high Ki-67 index, consistent with a non-metastatic subcutaneous LMS. Wide loc

Pediatric Breast Pathologies: 5-Year Experience and Proposal for a Risk-Based Management Algorithm.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Breast complaints in children are uncommon, and standardized management guidelines are lacking. Adult-based protocols are often extrapolated to pediatric patients despite differences due to breast development and different disease behavior. We aimed to review our institutional experience and propose a practical, evidence-informed diagnostic and management algorithm. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all female pediatric patients who presented with breast-related complaints to a tertiary pediatric surgery clinic between June 2020 and June 2025. Demographic and c

Male accessory breast mucinous carcinoma: a case report and literature review.

Accessory breast carcinoma represents a distinct ectopic malignancy comprising approximately 0.3-0.6% of all mammary neoplasms, of which male accessory breast cancer is even rarer. This condition typically manifests as a progressively enlarging mass, predominantly situated in the axillary or inguinal regions, and may present with early lymph node metastasis. Pathological examination remains the diagnostic gold standard, whereas ultrasound, mammography, and MRI serve as critical adjunctive modalities. Current therapeutic strategies for accessory breast carcinoma largely mirror established breas

Novel biallelic multi-exon duplication in the PIGN gene associated with multiple congenital anomalies-hypotonia-seizures syndrome 1.

BACKGROUND: Multiple congenital anomalies-hypotonia-seizures syndrome type 1 (MCAHS1) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by PIGN variants affecting glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor biosynthesis. Exon-level duplications are exceptionally uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a male neonate with multiple congenital anomalies, including auricular malformation, submucous cleft palate, accessory nipple, cryptorchidism, microphallus, clubfoot, and digital hypoplasia, accompanied by hypotonia and poor sucking. Whole-exome trio sequencing identified a biallelic duplication span

Breast reconstruction in supernumerary breast and ectopic breast tissue in Poland's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Poland's syndrome is a rare congenital condition characterized by anterior chest wall malformations and, frequently, ipsilateral upper limb deformities. Treatment strategies vary depending on severity and may involve complex reconstructive approaches. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 20-year-old female with Poland's syndrome who exhibited left-sided supernumerary nipple and significant breast asymmetry. Clinical examination revealed two vertically aligned nipples and accessory breast tissue 6 cm lateral to the midclavicular line. The patient also presented with agenesis

Axillary fibroadenoma: A rare case report and review of literature.

Fibroadenoma (FA) is a common benign tumor of the breast, but its occurrence in the axillary region is exceptionally rare. Such lesions may arise from accessory breast tissue or develop de novo within axillary stromal tissue, often mimicking lymphadenopathy or other soft-tissue masses. This report presents a rare axillary FA in a young female, highlighting its unusual site and diagnostic importance. A 23-year-old woman presented with a painless swelling in the left axilla that had gradually increased in size over 5 months. Ultrasound showed an oval, heterogeneously hypoechoic axillary mass wit

Congenital double lower lip in a newborn with feeding difficulties.

We describe the case of a full-term male newborn admitted on the first day of life due to feeding difficulties and hypoglycemia, who presented with a protruding bifid mass along the mucosa of the lower lip that interfered with breastfeeding. Double lip is a rare congenital condition caused by hyperplasia of the lip mucosa, most commonly affecting the upper lip. Surgical removal is generally recommended if the condition interferes with speech, sucking, or, more commonly, for cosmetic reasons. In this case treatment was conservative, resolving feeding difficulties without the need for surgery, w

Human Milk and Infant Gut Microbiome in Association With Infant Fecal Metabolome and Child Blood Pressure.

IMPORTANCE: Infant milk feeding type (eg, human milk vs formula) and infant gut microbes have each been associated with differences in microbial metabolites and childhood blood pressure; however, evidence remains limited regarding how specific infant gut microbes, at a species or strain level, in combination with milk feeding type, shape microbial metabolites and blood pressure. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether human milk feeding and infant gut microbes, including Bifidobacterium longum subsp infantis (B infantis) and other milk-degrading microbes, are associated with infant fecal metabolite

Case report of breastfeeding after maternal iodine contrast: neonatal hypothyroidism revealing an underlying congenital disorder.

BACKGROUND: Iodine plays a critical role in producing thyroid hormones essential for brain development. An imbalance of iodine, whether deficiency or excess, can disrupt thyroid function. Iodine-induced hypothyroidism is rare but has been reported, particularly in premature infants exposed to excess iodine. Currently, iohexol, a nonionic radiocontrast agent, has limited data but is considered compatible with breastfeeding. CASE PRESENTATION: A small for gestation African American male neonate was born at 36 weeks and 3 days of gestation and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit for res

PCOS and breast cancer risk: hormonal modulation and epidemiological trends.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal signals intricately regulate breast growth and development. Any perturbations due to altered endocrine and metabolic conditions, such as in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), may influence breast cancer risk. This review highlights the susceptibility of women with PCOS to breast cancer, with a focus on the potential contribution of its comorbidities, such as hyperandrogenism, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, menopausal status, inflammation, and use of ovulation induction agents to this association. METHODS: This is a narrative review including articles and informatio

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the axilla in a 70-year-old female: a case report of multidisciplinary management from a resource-limited setting.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Soft tissue sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Sarcomas constitute a rare subgroup that usually affects younger age groups. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 70-year-old female who presented with a right axillary mass that had gradually increased in size over the last 8 months. Imaging revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass that was free from the underlying muscle and joint capsule but was splaying the axillary vessels. Upfront resection of the mass was planned in the multidisciplinary meeting. Mass was excised with
