A 16-year-old phenotypic female with XY genotype presented an unusual form of nonfamilial male pseudohermaphroditism. Seemingly a normal girl during childhood, the patient failed to undergo pubertal changes presenting with scant pubic hair, absent axillary hair, lack of breast development, retarded bone age and primary amenorrhea. Neither uterus nor adnexa were palpable above the blind-ending vagina. Serum testosterone and estradiol were barely detectable by radioimmunoassay, while LH and FSH reached castrate levels. Two small testes were removed from the pelvic sidewalls which, on biopsy, sho

Three new cases of true hermaphroditism are described: a 14-year-old patient with a testis on one side and an ovotestis on the other side and a 11-year-old patient as well as a 6-year-old patient both with an ovary on the one side and an ovotestis on the other side. Twenty-four cases, which were personally investigated, were previously reported. Therefore, this analytic review is based upon the author's experience of 27 cases as well as 340 cases reported in the world literature since 1899. The presenting symptoms and age of diagnosis are discussed. Apart from ambiguous genitals, the developme

Two cases of Swyer's syndrome, characterized by rudimentary streaks in association with a 46,XY chromosome karyotype are reported. Both individuals were tall, with sparse axillary and pubic hair, and breasts were undeveloped in one and well developed in the other (she had some estrogen therapy). One had infantile but otherwise normal external genitals, while the other had poor development of labia majora and no clitoris. The vagina in each was normal, with a small cervix and uterus, and vaginal smears of the preadolescent type. Urinary 17-ketosteroids were normal, while gonadotropin levels wer

Primary mammary cancer often develops at multiple sites in either one or both breasts, evidently the result of a common carcinogen acting in multicentric loci. The occurrence of carcinoma in accessory breast tissue has been recorded, including carcinoma in supernumerary breast tissue within the labium, although the latter is rare. A 62-year-old woman developed carcinoma of the right breast which was followed nearly five and one half years later by the occurrence of adenocarcinoma in supernumerary breast tissue within the left labium majus. Concomitantly, carcinoma was detected in the left brea

This case report describes the genesis of endometrial carcinoma after prolonged stilboestrol therapy in a patient with gonadal dysgenesis (Turner's syndrome). The varied histological appearance included the presence of cartilage-like material. A review of the literature reveals the need to treat these patients with combined oestrogen/progestogen preparations rather than with continuous unopposed oestrogens.

Verified breast cancer was present in a father, his mother, and his daughter. His sone had a brain tumor (by history) and his grandson, (ehs sone of the affected daughter), had a histologically verified rhabdomyosarcoma. This familial aggregation of cancers (except for leukemia, which is absent) is consistent with a newly described familial breast cancer syndrome. A single pleiotropic, dominantly transmitted gene, possibly interacting with carcinogenic factors, such as an oncogenic virus, may be the cause. A cancer-control potential exists for tumor associations such as those exhibited in this

Mixed gonadal dysgenesis (MCG) is a rare intersexual disorder, characterized in most cases by the presence of a testis and a contralateral streak gonad; in some cases the contralateral gonad may be rudimentary not having differentiated into an ovary or into a testis and in other cases it may be absent. A personal case was recently studied by the authors in some detail: A 51-year-old individual reared as a female with primary amenorrhea, short stature, subnormal intelligence, male type habitus, hirsutism, moderate breast development, ambiguous external genitalia with a 5 x 2 cm phallus, labia m

Male and female offspring of rats given antiandrogens, the steroidal BOMT or the non steroids DIMP or Sch 13521, daily during the last third of pregnancy were studied. Detailed examinations were made of the genital tract of male, and of the nipples of male and female offspring. A) Male offspring. 1) Genital tract of newborn and 31-91 day old males : Modifications of the development of accessory sexual tissues were found in all treatment groups. As indicated by the severity of deviations from normal (morphology and weight of sex accessories), the antiandrogenic effect of the preparations, in th

Twelve women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia are reported. Initial diagnoses were made at ages ranging from 12 to 32, with epiphyseal fusion complete in all patients. During 6 to 10 years of corticosteroid therapy there occurred substantial reduction of hypertrichosis, disappearance of temporal recession, and decrease in eroticism. In 11 patients menstrual bleeding occurred within 4 months. Urinary excretion of total gonadotropins remained unchanged; total estrogens decreased slightly. By the end of followup, 7 patients with a mean age of 17 years had regular menses, 6 were ovulating, and

Chromosome changes in human cancer cells appear to evolve by non-random losses and/or gains of particular homologues or groups. It is probable that some of the apparent losses or gains actually represent formation of new chromosome structures, which are then classified as markers or are misclassified as normal homologues. In many cancers these changes appear to continue at a high rate throughout the life of the cancer (so that in some cancers almost every cell will exhibit a different karyotype). In other cancers the rate of change may be slow or arrested so that all cells will have the same a

One-hundred-and-seventy infants resident in the Oxford Record Linkage Area and dying suddenly and unexpectedly in the five-year period 1966-70 were linked with the records concerning their delivery. For each of these cases three controls were chosen, matched for maternal age, parity, social class, legitimacy, and place and year of delivery. The files of general hospital admissions were scanned to identify admissions to the mothers during the pregnancy, and admissions to the infants, for both index cases and controls. Significant associations were found with short gestation, low birthweight, sl

The plastic surgeon is not a miracle worker, as so many of his patients believe. Nevertheless, he can do much to minimize the functional and cosmetic effect of many congenital deformities. If a moral can be drawn from this article it must be that the plastic surgeon should be given an early opportunity to see and assess the patients described here, if only to ease the anxiety in the minds of their parents by appropriate reassurance and discussion.

Three triploid infants, two male (69,XXY) and one female (69,XXX) all of which survived beyond 35 weeks' gestation are described. One was stillborn due to a difficult delivery, the other two survived for a few hours only. Two were of relatively low birth weight, the other was normal. There was no evidence of mosaicism in the tissue examined. In keeping with previously reported triploid infants they showed a variety of abnormalities. From a total of 13 cases now reported the more frequent associated anomalies are low set ears, coloboma of the iris, syndactyly of the hands, a single palmar creas

A review of cases indicated that gingival fibromatosis occurs in a variety of genetic entities. High risk for epilepsy and oligophrenia is associated if hypertrichosis is present. Other entities are symmetrical gingival fibromatosis; Zimmermann-Laband syndrome with bone, ear, nose and nail defects and hepatosplenomegaly; Murray syndrome with multiple hyaline dermal tumors; Rutherfurd syndrome with corneal dystrophy; Cowden syndrome with hypertrichosis, oligophrenia and giant fibroadenomatosis of breasts and Cross syndrome of hypopigmentation, oligophrenia and athetosis.
