The Basel ultrasonography protocol for assessing hepatosplenic pathologies in Asian schistosomiasis: report of a WHO expert meeting.

Asian hepatointestinal schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma japonicum is prevalent in the Philippines and in Indonesia, while it is close to elimination in China. The second Asian schistosome, S. mekongi, is found in Cambodia and Laos. The main pathology caused by both species is liver fibrosis, which can cause significant morbidity and mortality, mainly due to portal hypertension leading to bleeding from esophageal varices. Ultrasonography was introduced several decades ago as a safe, fast, non-invasive, and relatively inexpensive technique for assessing chronic schistosomiasis-related hepatic

Cerebral schistosomiasis in a 3-year-old girl due to Schistosoma japonicum: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral schistosomiasis is a rare but severe manifestation of Schistosoma japonicum infection, often leading to significant neurological impairment. This case report details the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and treatment of a 3-year-old girl with cerebral schistosomiasis in Sichuan, China. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old girl from a rural area in Sichuan, China, presented with a 3-month history of unstable walking, left facial paralysis, drowsiness, and intermittent fever. Brain MRI revealed giant polycystic lesions in the right temporal, parietal, and occipital

Neuro-schistosomiasis with palm tree contrast enhancement pattern, a report of three cases, and review of literature.

We describe three cases of neuroschistosomiasis, two cases with cerebral schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma japonicum, with multiple pseudotumoral lesions presented with seizures and hemiparesis respectively, and a spinal cord conus medullaris schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mansoni presented with conus medullaris syndrome. In the two cases with cerebral schistosomiasis imaging with CT revealed multiple areas of brain edema, and gyriform calcifications in both cerebral hemispheres, which suggested cerebral parasitemia, chronic venous hypertension, multifocal cerebral vascular malformation,

Schistosomiasis in the Philippines: Innovative Control Approach is Needed if Elimination is the Goal.

In 1996, schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma japonicum was declared eradicated in Japan. In the People's Republic of China, S. japonicum transmission has been interrupted in the major endemic areas in the coastal plains but the disease persists in the lake and marshland regions south of the Yangtze River. The disease remains a public health problem in endemic areas in the Philippines and in isolated areas in Indonesia. Comprehensive multidisciplinary campaigns had led to eradication of schistosomiasis in Japan and have been successful in the interruption of disease transmission in the major end

Antibody Signatures Reflect Different Disease Pathologies in Patients With Schistosomiasis Due to Schistosoma japonicum.

Infection with Schistosoma japonicum causes high levels of pathology that is predominantly determined by the cellular and humoral response of the host. However, the specific antibody response that arises during the development of disease is largely undescribed in Asian schistosomiasis-endemic populations. A schistosome protein microarray was used to compare the antibody profiles of subjects with acute infection, with early or advanced disease associated with severe pathology, with chronic infection, and subjects exposed but stool negative for S. japonicum eggs to the antibody profiles of nonex

Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis presenting as spontaneous hemoperitoneum in a Filipino immigrant.

Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis is due to chronic parasitic trematode infections with various Schistosoma sp. The Schistosoma life cycle requires contamination of surface water by infected human or animal excreta, specific freshwater snail intermediate hosts and human skin contact with water. The disease is prevalent in many developing tropical areas, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa as well as in Southeast Asia. Deposition of Schistosoma eggs in the hepatic portal system leads to periportal fibrosis, cirrhosis and portal hypertension but little hepatocellular damage. Portal hypertension of an

The sensitivity of artesunate against Schistosoma japonicum decreased after 10 years of use in China.

Schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma japonicum is a major public health problem in China. Since 1995, artesunate has been used to treat and prevent schistosome infections in China. Artesunate previously showed a high prophylactic efficacy against schistosome infection, with a protection rate of 100%. However, recent clinical trials and animal experiments have found that the sensitivity of many schistosomes to artesunate, including Schistosoma mekongi and Schistosoma mansoni, decreased. Whether the prophylactic efficacy of artesunate on Schistosomiasis japonica decreased after being used over 10-

Epidemiologic study of the relationship between schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma japonicum and liver cancer/cirrhosis.

In Yamanashi Prefecture, one of the former areas in Japan endemic for Schistosoma japonicum, there have been no cases of schistosomiasis since 1978. We attempted to find out in this study whether there was still a chronic effect of schistosomiasis, e.g., liver cancer or liver cirrhosis present in this region. The subjects studied were the population in Yamanashi Prefecture from 1973 through 1992. We divided the population into residents in an area endemic for schistosomiasis and those in a nonendemic area. We calculated the standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for liver cancer and liver cirrho
