Living Flat: Stories from Women of Color After Mastectomy.

BACKGROUND: There remain persistent racial and ethnic disparities in the receipt of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction for breast cancer. Yet, patient-reported outcomes and advocacy efforts around living flat overwhelmingly have focused on white women. We sought to characterize the lived experiences among women of color living flat after mastectomy for breast cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our community-partnered study included a sociodemographic and health questionnaire followed by semistructured interviews. Using an interview guide designed in an interdisciplinary manner, we explored them

Systemic infection of Bryoria (Lecanoromycetes, Ascomycota) by Athelia (Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) in western North America.

Bryoria (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota) is one of the dominant genera of hair lichens in western North America and is characteristic of high-elevation conifer forest ecosystems. In areas where Bryoria is abundant, it is common to find thalli in which the thalline filaments become conglutinated, forming brittle dead zones. After sampling Bryoria thalli across western Canada and the northwestern United States at different times of the year, we found that this dieback phenomenon is associated with the winter growth of a mold-forming basidiomycete. We report that this fungus belongs to Athelia (Athelia

Congenital, Inherited Bilateral Amastia in a Quarter Horse Mare.

Congential amastia, a medical condition in which mammary tissue fails to develop, was detected in a 3-year-old Quarter Horse mare. The dam of the mare was also afflicted with amastia, suggesting that the condition was due to an inherited genetic mutation as noted in other species. In addition, on presentation the mare had a purulent vaginal discharge secondary to a pyometra.

Postburn breast reconstruction: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Postburn breast deformities pose functional and aesthetic concerns for burn patients, particularly when injury occurs before puberty, as normal breast development may be hindered. Postburn breast reconstruction aims at restoration of native anatomic features, as well as re-establishment of symmetry. The objectives of this scoping review are to map the literature on scar management and breast reconstruction, highlighting strategies that are particular to postburn deformities, as well as to establish optimal timing principles. METHODS: A comprehensive search of the English literat

Dominant negative variants in IKZF2 cause ICHAD syndrome, a new disorder characterised by immunodysregulation, craniofacial anomalies, hearing impairment, athelia and developmental delay.

BACKGROUND: Helios (encoded by IKZF2), a member of the Ikaros family of transcription factors, is a zinc finger protein involved in embryogenesis and immune function. Although predominantly recognised for its role in the development and function of T lymphocytes, particularly the CD4+ regulatory T cells (Tregs), the expression and function of Helios extends beyond the immune system. During embryogenesis, Helios is expressed in a wide range of tissues, making genetic variants that disrupt the function of Helios strong candidates for causing widespread immune-related and developmental abnormalit

A Three-Step Reconstruction of the Breast in a Patient With Congenital Unilateral Amastia.

Amastia refers to a condition where breast tissue, nipples, and areoles are congenitally absent, and it can affect one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) breasts. Congenital amastia is a rare condition with only 34 reported cases in the literature. In this case, we report a 17-year-old female with congenital unilateral amastia of the right breast. She came to our clinic due to a cosmetic view of this defect, which was bothering her, and greatly reducing the overall quality of her life. Our patient's physical examination revealed the absence of right breast, and there was no other obvious physica

Parietal bone agenesis and athelia in retinoic acid embryopathy: An expansion of the phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Retinoic acid signaling plays a critical role during embryogenesis and requires tight regulation. Exposure to exogenous retinoic acid during fetal development is known to have teratogenic effects, producing a recognizable embryopathy. CASE: We describe a case of retinoic acid embryopathy secondary to maternal isotretinoin use until the ninth week of gestation and expand the phenotype to include the rare features of parietal bone agenesis and athelia. Histology of the parietal region showed fibrous tissue with no intramembranous ossification. The fetus also had multiple craniofacia

Reconstruction of Severe Burns to the Breast in Pediatric Patients: A 10-Year Experience.

The breast and anterior chest are the most commonly burned part of the trunk. Burn injuries to the breast can be associated with pain, asymmetries, and significant social stigma. Burns to the breast bud in the young female may inhibit normal breast development and result in either significant asymmetries or amastia, making the treatment of breast burn injuries challenging. A retrospective chart review was conducted on all female patients under the age of 21 years admitted to our institution for breast burn injuries from January 1, 2008 to December 30, 2018. Patients were included if they had f

Congenital breast deformities: Anatomical basis and surgical approaches for optimal aesthetic outcomes.

Plastic surgeons routinely encounter patients desiring correction of breast asymmetry, hypoplastic growth, or other aesthetic concerns. An appropriate recognition of congenital breast conditions is critical for plastic surgeons. Without consideration of underlying anatomical abnormalities in these patients, surgical intervention may not result in optimal aesthetic outcomes. Often, patients are unaware of their congenital condition and the limitations and difficulties associated with reconstruction must be discussed with the patient preoperatively to ensure optimal aesthetic outcomes. The goal

Phenotypic expansion of KMT2D-related disorder: Beyond Kabuki syndrome.

Pathogenic variants in KMT2D, which encodes lysine specific methyltransferase 2D, cause autosomal dominant Kabuki syndrome, associated with distinctive dysmorphic features including arched eyebrows, long palpebral fissures with eversion of the lower lid, large protuberant ears, and fetal finger pads. Most disease-causing variants identified to date are putative loss-of-function alleles, although 15-20% of cases are attributed to missense variants. We describe here four patients (including one previously published patient) with de novo KMT2D missense variants and with shared but unusual clinica

Breast Reconstruction in Poland Syndrome Patients with Latissimus Dorsi Myo Flap and Implant: An Efficient Endoscopic Approach Using Single Transverse Axillary Incision.

BACKGROUND: Breast hypoplasia or amastia with pectoralis major muscle defect in female Poland syndrome patients always necessitates surgical intervention. This study aims to introduce an efficient endoscopic technique to perform breast reconstruction in Poland syndrome patients with a latissimus dorsi myo flap and an implant using a single transverse axillary incision (ELDM + IMPLANT) and to evaluate its safety and effectiveness. METHODS: A prospective study was designed to recruit Poland syndrome candidates for ELDM + IMPLANT breast reconstruction. Only one transaxillary incision was made to

Breast Reconstruction with Perforator Flaps in Poland Syndrome: Report of a Two-Stage Strategy and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a congenital deformity presenting unilateral hypoplasia of the breast, pectoralis muscle, and ipsilateral skeletal anomalies. In complex female cases, the significant amount of soft tissue needed for reconstruction continues to be a surgical challenge. Perforator flaps offer alternative methods with sufficient tissue volume, minimal donor site morbidity, and natural cosmetic outcome; however, their role in Poland syndrome breast reconstruction is seldom discussed. This study aims to present a new 2-stage strategy for esthetic restoration of the Poland syndrome ch

What does a breast feel like? A qualitative study among healthy women.

BACKGROUND: Restoring the body as normal as possible increases quality of life. Aesthetically, almost perfect breast reconstructions can be created. However, these reconstructed breasts have almost no sensation. Our hypothesis is that if we succeed in restoring sensation, this will increase quality of life. So far, little is written about the phenomenon of breast sensation, which makes it difficult to evaluate whether the quality of life increases after restored sensation. Therefore, the primary goal of this study is to determine what the importance and meaning is of breast sensation among hea

Proposal of the TBN Classification of Thoracic Anomalies and Treatment Algorithm for Poland Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a congenital deformity characterized by unilateral anomalies of pectoralis muscles, breast, nipple, axillary fold, subcutaneous tissue, ribs, and upper limb. The thoracic anomaly, which is the pathognomonic malformation of Poland syndrome, presents a wide phenotype variability and has been classified by different authors. However, these classifications do not include all the possible phenotypes of Poland syndrome. The aim of this study is to propose a simple classification of the whole spectrum of thoracic anomalies and a treatment algorithm that could have a pra
