Fine needle aspiration cytologic diagnosis of axillary accessory breast tissue, including its physiologic changes and pathologic lesions.

Sixty-nine cases of axillary accessory breast tissue, including its physiologic changes and pathologic lesions, were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The age of the patients ranged from 13 to 40 years, with a median of 25, and all were female. The cases presented with swellings in the left axilla in 16 cases, right axilla in 30 cases and both axillae in 23 cases. The common clinical diagnoses included accessory breast tissue (23.2%), lipomatous lesion (17.4%), lymphadenopathy (18.8%) and swellings not otherwise specified (30.4%). In 8.8% cases two of the possibilities were conside

Actinomycosis of the accessory breast treated with cotrimoxazole.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative granulomatous disease caused by the filamentous bacteria, Actinomyces israelii, which was once thought to be a fungus. It is a Gram-positive, aerobic or microaerophillic, non acid-fast hyphal organism which fragments into coccoid or bacillary forms and, unlike the fungus, does not form conidia. Accessory breast tissue usually occurs along the milk lines, frequently in the axilla and rarely in the thighs. Actinomycosis of the breast is very uncommon and we report the case of a multiparous woman who had a painful lump in the axilla which, on histopathologic

Accessory breast tissue in the axilla: mammographic appearance.

Mammographic features of normal accessory axillary breast tissue were analyzed in 13 women, 54% of whom had positive findings on physical examination. Radiographically the accessory tissue resembled the remaining normal glandular tissue but was separate from it. The mean radiographic dimension of the accessory tissue, which was best seen on oblique or exaggerated craniocaudal views, was 3.9 cm. In most cases the accessory tissue was either bilateral or confined to the right side. When found on mammography, accessory axillary breast tissue should be recognized as a normal developmental variant

[Clinicopathological study of 9 cases presenting axillary masses only].

A clinicopathological study of 9 cases presenting axillary mass alone was reported. Histological diagnosis revealed 3 occult breast cancers, 2 apocrine gland adenocarcinomas of the skin, a carcinoma and a fibroadenoma in the axillary accessory breast, a neurogenic tumor in the axilla, and a benign lymphadenopathy. There were no clinical characteristics helpful in preoperative differential diagnosis. As the axilla includes the main lymphatic routes from the breast, the axillary tail of the breast and accessory breast, breast-associated tumors should be kept in mind in the management of patients

Fungating accessory breast carcinoma in Nigerian women.

Three cases of fungating accessory breast carcinoma out of a total of 22 malignant breast formations seen and treated in Ile-Ife, Nigeria between January 1977 and November 1981 are described. The clinical presentations, features and histologic findings are presented. The methods of management and the need for close observation as well as follow up for at least two years is emphasized. A frequency of 14% as seen in this series appears so high that one cannot describe the occurrence of malignant changes in the accessory breast as rare.

[A case of carcinoma originating from accessory breast tissue of the axilla].

We report a case of carcinoma originating from accessory breast tissue of axilla and review 33 reported cases of carcinoma in heterotopic breast tissue. Although the incidence of accessory breast cancer is not high, early diagnosis and treatment are necessary, keeping in mind the possibility of this carcinoma when subcutaneous nodules of uncertain origin are found around the breast. Surgical treatment which must at least include wide local extirpation including the surrounding tissues and dissection of the axillary lymph nodes is necessary and adjunctive chemotherapy and irradiation appear to

Accessory breast on the posterior thigh of a man.

An elderly man with a mass that clinically resembles the normal female breast on the posterior portion of his left thigh is presented. We believe this is an unusual case of accessory breast tissue occurring in a location remote from the embryonic mammary line.

[Fibroadenoma in an accessory breast. A case of polythelia and fibroadenoma in the left breast region and a perivulvar accessory breast].

The case of a 32-year-old female patient with multiple malformations (hare-lip, polythelia, fibroadenoma in an accessory mammary gland) and independent of these, another fibroadenoma in the breast is reported. The fibroadenoma developing in the accessory breast around the vulva, diagnosed by means of aspiration biopsy cytology, should be payed special attention. This case also confirms the applicability in preoperative diagnostics of aspiration biopsy cytology, a method which has proved to be effective for years.

Carcinoma of supernumerary breast of vulva with bilateral mammary cancer.

Primary mammary cancer often develops at multiple sites in either one or both breasts, evidently the result of a common carcinogen acting in multicentric loci. The occurrence of carcinoma in accessory breast tissue has been recorded, including carcinoma in supernumerary breast tissue within the labium, although the latter is rare. A 62-year-old woman developed carcinoma of the right breast which was followed nearly five and one half years later by the occurrence of adenocarcinoma in supernumerary breast tissue within the left labium majus. Concomitantly, carcinoma was detected in the left brea
