Pavlik Harness Treatment for Infantile Hip Dysplasia Lowers Breastfeeding Self-efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding is recommended exclusively until at least 6 months of age by the American Academy of Pediatrics. For mothers of children with hip dysplasia (DDH), Pavlik harness treatment may impact breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to assess how Pavlik harness treatment may impact breastfeeding by evaluating patient-reported outcomes (PRO) associated with breastfeeding. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of mothers of patients treated in a Pavlik harness for DDH at <3 months of age. Controls were recruited from patients evaluated for DDH who had normal ultrasound

Breastfeeding in children with down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Babies with Down syndrome (DS) present physical characteristics that can make breastfeeding difficult, including hypotonia of the muscles of the oral cavity and pharynx which can create problems with sucking and swallowing. Breastfeeding has proven beneficial for babies, and it is recommended to be exclusive for the first 6 months. However, babies born with DS have a higher probability of not being breastfed. OBJECTIVE: Describe the frequency and characteristics of breastfeeding in children with DS at the National Institute of Pediatrics, Mexico City. RESULTS: The mothers repor

[Management of Infants Born to HIV-Infected Mothers: Eighteen Years of Single-Center Experience].

The most common route of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in children is perinatal transmission. HIV can be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of mothers and babies born to HIV-infected mothers and the methods applied to prevent perinatal HIV transmission and their outcomes. Data of babies born to HIV-infected mothers who were followed up at our tertiary hospital between January 2007 and December 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and perinatal information of the patients,

Oropouche Virus (OROV) and Breastfeeding Safety: Analysis of Related Orthobunyaviruses for Mother-Infant Vertical Transmission in Breast Milk.

The discovery that the Oropouche virus (OROV) can be transmitted vertically from an infected pregnant mother to the fetus, resulting in fetal and placental OROV infection, miscarriage, stillbirth, and congenital malformations including microcephaly, has emphasized its public health significance. Because of the importance of breastfeeding in those areas affected by the Oropouche fever outbreak, public health agencies have continued to encourage nursing among mothers who have had OROV infection or who reside or travel in endemic regions. However, the basis for this recommendation has not been st

A Novel Subtype of Spondylocostal Dysplasia Associated With a Heterozygous Missense FLNA Variant.

BACKGROUND: Spondylocostal dysplasia (SCD) is characterized by vertebral defects and rib abnormalities. Following radiological diagnosis, further genetic testing is conducted to confirm the mutant loci and identify the subtype of SCD. While seven loci potentially associated with SCD have been identified, rare cases remain unexplained. CASE PRESENTATIONS: A 37-year-old female diagnosed with SCD at birth was reported in this study. She exhibited scoliosis and thoracic asymmetry, along with a left-sided bilateral breast deformity. Imaging analysis revealed congenital scoliosis with a lack of seg

Benefits of Maternal Choline Supplementation on Aged Basal Forebrain Cholinergic Neurons (BFCNs) in a Mouse Model of Down Syndrome and Alzheimer's Disease.

Down syndrome (DS), stemming from the triplication of human chromosome 21, results in intellectual disability, with early mid-life onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Early interventions to reduce cognitive impairments and neuropathology are lacking. One modality, maternal choline supplementation (MCS), has shown beneficial effects on behavior and gene expression in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, including trisomic mice. Loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs) and other DS/AD relevant hallmarks were observed in a well-established trisomic model (Ts65Dn

Polythelia (Supernumerary Nipple): Clinicopathological Characterization of an Atavistic Lesion.

Polythelia refers to the presence of additional nipples typically located along the "milk line." While its atavistic nature and associations with congenital anomalies are well documented, its clinicopathological features are less defined. This retrospective study reviewed 131 lesions diagnosed as polythelia in 112 patients from 1999 to 2024. The median age of patients at the time of excision was 28 years (range: 6 months to 72 years). Most (101, 90.2%) patients were female. Lesions were located around the breast (42%), chest (28%), axilla (15%), inframammary fold (8%), and abdomen (6%). Histop

10-steps laparoscopic excision for a rudimentary uterine horn.

Uterine malformations of the rudimentary horn type affect 2 to 4 % of women. Resulting from a defect in the fusion of Muller's ducts, they are responsible for dysmenorrhea and lead to ectopic pregnancies, as well as endometriosis. These implications mean that their removal is recommended in young patients with a potential desire for pregnancy. In addition, rudimentary uterine horns are associated with renal anomalies in 20-30 % of cases. We managed three patients with different histories for rudimentary uterine horns. We described ten surgical steps to explore and manage these rudimentary horn

Clear Cell Papulosis Associated With Multiple Developmental Abnormalities of the Skin.

Clear cell papulosis of the skin is a rare condition in children characterized by multiple small hypopigmented macules or flat papules, predominantly distributed in the pubic area and over the abdomen, chest, and axillae, along the milk lines, and by mucin- and cytokeratin 7-positive large clear cells within the epidermis. Associations of clear cell papulosis with other diseases or disorders have been rarely described. We present a case of clear cell papulosis associated with a congenital sacral dermoid cyst, nevus of Ota, presumed accessory breast tissue, thin and lightly pigmented hair, cong

Effects of Psychotropic Medications Taken by Pregnant Women on Newborn Medical Condition and Lactation Method.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychiatric condition during the perinatal period is relevant to children's cognitive development and mental health. Psychotropic medications are necessary to maintain the mental health of pregnant women with psychiatric disorders, but they are often avoided due to concerns about adverse effects, such as congenital malformations and abnormal neurodevelopment. A retrospective study of pregnant women with psychiatric disorders using psychotropic medications was performed to clarify maternal and child demographic data and to investigate whether psychotropic medications affect

Nationwide Expert Survey on Appropriate Bile Duct Transection Line in Adult and Pediatric Congenital Biliary Dilatation Surgery in Japan: AOB Consensus Meeting.

BACKGROUND: Resection of the extrahepatic bile duct including the gallbladder and the dilated segment, is a widely accepted surgical concept in congenital biliary dilatation (CBD) in both adult and pediatric surgeons. However, owing to the existence of various types of CBD and differences in the extent of dilatation, no consensus has been reached regarding the appropriate resection margins. METHODS: Consensus statements regarding the appropriate surgical margins for both the duodenal and hepatic hilum sides were developed as two clinical questions (CQs) during a multidisciplinary consensus me

Cerebral cavernous malformation proteins, CCM1, CCM2 and CCM3, are decreased in metastatic lesions in a murine breast carcinoma model.

Three genes are associated with cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs): CCM1, CCM2 and CCM3. These genes participate in microvascular angiogenesis, cell-to-cell junctions, migration and apoptosis. We evaluated the expression in vivo of CCM genes in primary tumors and metastastases in a murine model of metastatic breast carcinoma. We used cell lines obtained from metastasis of 4T1, 4TLM and 4THM breast cancer to liver and heart. These cells were injected into the mammary ridge of Balb/C female mice. After 27 days, the primary tumors, liver and lung were removed and CCM proteins were assessed u

A case of Bloom syndrome manifesting with therapy-related myelodysplastic syndromes harboring a novel BLM gene variant.

Bloom syndrome (BS) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by variants in the BLM gene. BS is characterized by distinct facial features, elongated limbs, and various dermatological complications including photosensitivity, poikiloderma, and telangiectatic erythema. The BLM gene encodes a RecQ helicase critical for genome maintenance, stability, and repair, and a deficiency in functional BLM protein leads to genomic instability and high predisposition to various types of cancers, particularly hematological and gastrointestinal malignancies. Here, we report a case of BS with a previou

Multi-omics analysis of a case of congenital microtia reveals aldob and oxidative stress associated with microtia etiology.

BACKGROUND: Microtia is reported to be one of the most common congenital craniofacial malformations. Due to the complex etiology and the ethical barrier of embryonic study, the precise mechanisms of microtia remain unclear. Here we report a rare case of microtia with costal chondrodysplasia based on bioinformatics analysis and further verifications on other sporadic microtia patients. RESULTS: One hundred fourteen deleterious insert and deletion (InDel) and 646 deleterious SNPs were screened out by WES, candidate genes were ranked in descending order according to their relative impact with mi

Unravelling drivers of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is an umbrella term for a group of rare inherited skin disorders characterised by mucocutaneous fragility. Patients suffer from blisters and chronic wounds that arise spontaneously or following minor mechanical trauma, often resulting in inflammation, scarring and fibrosis due to poor healing. The recessive form of dystrophic EB (RDEB) has a particularly severe phenotype and is caused by mutations in the COL7A1 gene, encoding the collagen VII protein, which is responsible for adhering the epidermis and dermis together. One of the most feared and devastating complicat

Asymptomatic Bloom syndrome diagnosed by chance in a patient with breast cancer.

Bloom syndrome (BS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by biallelic inactivation of the BLM gene, which usually manifests in childhood by significant growth retardation, immune deficiency, characteristic skin lesions, cancer predisposition and other distinguishable disease features. To our knowledge, all prior instances of BS have been identified via intentional analysis of patients with clinical suspicion for this disease or DNA testing of members of affected pedigrees. We describe an incidental finding of BS, which occurred upon routine germline DNA analysis of consecutive breast cancer patie
