The relevant literature has been reviewed and it appears that there is no doubt that in utero exposure to stilboestrol is related to the eventual development of vaginal adenocarcinoma in young females. Although cancer of other types are also prevalent, the incidence is not great and may be related to other types of drugs taken during pregnancy. The review attempts to correlate the genetic effects with the abnormal development, but on account of the scarcity of data such correlation is not possible. Three patients with postaxial polydactyly and other abnormalities of the hands and feet, hypoplasia and fusion of the vertebral bodies, and dental abnormalities are reported. Two were sisters born to normal unrelated parents; the other patient was the male offspring of a consanguineous marriage. A series of 88 cases of male breast cancer was compared with 241 cases of female breast cancer randomly selected from Departmental records. Cases of male breast cancer differed significantly from control female cases with regard to stage of the disease, age of onset and liability to the development of a second carcinoma. The mammary glands of ten still-birth premature fetuses were studied histologically. In seven cases a combination of oestrogen-progesterone preparations were administered to the mother in early pregnancy for a duration of at least 3 months. In three cases no hormones were administered. According to our observations and the experimental work of other investigators, we may conclude that oestrogenic hormones inhibit the development of the mammary gland.

This case report describes the genesis of endometrial carcinoma after prolonged stilboestrol therapy in a patient with gonadal dysgenesis (Turner's syndrome). The varied histological appearance included the presence of cartilage-like material. A review of the literature reveals the need to treat these patients with combined oestrogen/progestogen preparations rather than with continuous unopposed oestrogens.

Twelve women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia are reported. Initial diagnoses were made at ages ranging from 12 to 32, with epiphyseal fusion complete in all patients. The plastic surgeon is not a miracle worker, as so many of his patients believe. Nevertheless, he can do much to minimize the functional and cosmetic effect of many congenital deformities. If a moral can be drawn from this article it must be that the plastic surgeon should be given an early opportunity to see and assess the patients described here, if only to ease the anxiety in the minds of their parents by appropriate reassurance and discussion.

Three triploid infants, two male (69,XXY) and one female (69,XXX) all of which survived beyond 35 weeks' gestation are described.
