Genome-wide paternal uniparental isodisomy mosaicism (GWpUPIDM) is an extremely rare condition characterized by varying proportions of an androgenetic cell line across different tissues. It is primarily associated with severe congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI), Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) stigmata, a high risk (69-79%) of developing neoplasia and, in some cases, additional manifestations of multilocus paternal imprinting disorders (MPIDs). We herein report the first Mexican/Latin American female patient GWpUPIDM presenting with non-syndromic CHI requiring subtotal pancreatectomy and persis

BACKGROUND: Acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau (ACH) is a rare, sterile pustular psoriasis variant refractory to many conventional treatments. The eruption typically occurs after local trauma or infection; other etiologies include neural, inflammatory, and genetic causes. Herein we reported a single case of a 64-year-old patient with ACH that was successfully treated with spesolimab for 19 weeks.
CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old Chinese male with no personal or known family history of psoriasis had recurrent episodes of redness, swelling, and pustules in the nail bed on seven fingers with progre

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare genodermatosis characterised by defects in the development of ectodermal tissues, primarily affecting hair, teeth, and sweat glands. It can be inherited in autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked patterns. Mutations in the EDA, EDAR, or EDARADD genes, which encode Ectodysplasin-A, the EDA receptor, and a death domain, respectively, are responsible for HED. A 36-year-old Sudanese male presented with hypohidrosis, hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and Ichthyosis without an obvious family history of the HED syndrome. Six members of his exten

Biofuels and bioenergy production are increasingly being viewed as viable alternatives to conventional energy sources because of their renewable nature and ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waste products, lignocellulosic materials, and agricultural residues are some of the feedstocks that can be used to create biofuels, including biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. The production of biofuels not only promotes sustainable energy but also addresses environmental problems. This review article explores the challenges posed by dependence on non-sustainable resources and the environmental

BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) and folliculitis decalvans (FD) are two of the most common types of primary scarring alopecia. Several Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) have been used effectively in their treatment. We conducted an immunohistochemical (IHC) study to evaluate whether any member of the JAK family was overexpressed in the primary inflammatory infiltrate of FD and LPP. Additionally, we performed an exploratory retrospective study on the efficacy and safety of oral JAKis in LPP.
METHODS: Pathology scalp samples from seven healthy controls and 28 patients with LPP or FD were se

Cobalamin (Cbl) metabolism deficiencies are a heterogeneous group (CblA, CblB, CblC, CblD, CblE, CblF, CblG) of autosomal recessive disorders. CblF deficiency occurs due to mutations in LMBRD1 gene, causing variable phenotype, including neurological, haematological, developmental and dermatological defects. Here, we describe a 15-year-old male, presented with clinical features of Dyskeratosis Congenita (DC) such as dystrophic nails, skin discoloration with additional clinical features of uniform reticulate-brown hued hyperpigmentation, developmental delay, mild intellectual disability, mucosit

Dear Editor, Genodermatoses are usually diagnosed in early childhood but diagnosis may be delayed in rare cases. Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome (SSPS) first described in 1971 is a rare type of autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma, periocular and eyelid apocrine hidrocystomas, hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and nail dystrophy (1). Fewer than 40 cases have been reported up to 2018 (2) and the number has slightly increased with subsequent case reports. We report here a 73-year-old male patient whose parents were third-degree cousins presented to dermatol

RATIONALE: Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV (HSAN IV) may be misdiagnosed because of low awareness among clinical professionals and overlap with other subtypes of congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP).
PATIENT: The patient was a 1-year-and-5-months-old boy whose main symptoms were delayed psychomotor development and recurrent fever. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed a compound heterozygous mutation (c. 1927C > T, c. 851-33T > A) in the NTRK1 gene of the child. Pathological analysis showed decreased autonomic small nerve fibers, sparse hair follicles, and atrophy of the

This review aims to present a comprehensive synthesis of the existing treatment modalities for keratosis pilaris (KP) and evaluate their therapeutic efficacy. KP is a prevalent chronic dermatological condition typified by its unique 'chicken skin appearance', with the cheeks being the most commonly involved sites. Numerous therapeutic interventions have emerged, given its substantial prevalence and impact on skin aesthetics and psychological wellbeing. Nonetheless, a consistent therapeutic response has been challenging to achieve. This review endeavours to collate and critically appraise the c

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP, Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome) is a multisystem disorder which associates specific skin lesions that evolves in four stages, and occasionally, central nervous system, eye, hair, and teeth involvement. Familial (35%) and sporadic (65%) cases are caused by pathogenic variants in the IKBKG gene. Here we report an unusual family, where, in two half-sisters affected by typical IP, molecular genetic analysis identified a likely pathogenic non-sense variant in the IKBKG gene of one of the sisters, the other being not a carrier. The strong clinical conviction motivated further

Of patients with a Noonan syndrome phenotype, only about 1% are found to be related to pathological variants in CBL, also known as Noonan syndrome-like disorder (NSLD). We present a case of a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with NSLD, presenting with multiple melanocytic nevi and superficial neurofibromas. A literature review identified common cutaneous findings of NSLD, for example, café-au-lait macules (22%), juvenile xanthogranuloma (16%), and thin hair (10%). As there are no documented cases of neurofibromas associated with NSLD, and only a single report of multiple melanocytic nevi, inclusion of

The current case report presents a male baby, second born to nonconsanguineous parents at 38 weeks of gestation by lower segment cesarean section, with engorged blood vessels and distinctive patterns of discoloration and dilation of blood vessels on the left leg. A Doppler of the femoral artery and vein showed normal triphasic flow and waveforms without any evidence of significant luminal stenosis. There was also a lower limb length discrepancy of 1.5 cm. Genetic testing using fluorometric enzyme immunoassay screening revealed a negative screening report. Otologic screening using distortion pr

Pili multigemini is an uncommon hair follicle disorder, where multiple hair shafts emerge from the same follicular opening. While it is commonly observed in men's facial hair, it has also been reported, albeit infrequently, in other areas of the body. Here we describe an unusual case of congenital pili multigemini presenting on the eyebrow of a female infant.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old Asian woman of Han ethnicity presented to the clinic with trunk lesions for over a year. On physical examination: multiple light brown patches of varying size centered on hair follicles in the axillae and trunk, with the patches on the back fusing together and scales visible on the surface of the patches. Finally, through fungal microscopy

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) have a complex etiology, and environmental factors play an important role in their occurrence. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous chemicals, and some have teratogenic potential. However, few studies have examined PAHs exposure and CHD risk. We investigated the association between PAHs in maternal scalp hair and CHD risk.
METHODS: A case-control study involving 170 severe CHD cases and 170 healthy controls was conducted, and the concentrations of 11 PAHs in maternal hair grown during the periconceptional period were quantified. A

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a rare disease in children and a leading cause of heart failure. There are numerous causes of DCM including genetic causes leading to isolated or syndromic presentations, with a wide variety of implicated genes. Among them, PPP1R13L is associated with a recessive syndrome leading to cardiac anomalies with skin, teeth, and hair abnormalities. Fifteen patients have been described so far. We report a patient born to unrelated parents with early-onset and progressive DCM, skin appendage anomalies, and an anorectal anomaly. Her late brother shared the same phenotype.

Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is a rare genetic disorder with a high mortality rate among pediatric patients, primarily as a result of related infections. Its defining clinical feature is brittle, dry hair, with broken hair shafts revealing "tiger-tail banding". Other common characteristics include photosensitivity, scaly skin and stunted growth. The disorder's rarity and variety of symptoms pose diagnostic challenges, yet early diagnosis and treatment can improve a patient's overall health and quality of life. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of an underweight five-year-old boy

Biomagnetic fluid dynamics (BFD) is an emerging and promising field within fluid mechanics, focusing on the dynamics of bio-fluids like blood in the presence of magnetic fields. This research is crucial in the medical arena for applications such as medication delivery, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, prevention of excessive bleeding, and treatment of malignant tumors using magnetic particles. This study delves into the intricacies of blood flow induced by cilia, carrying trihybrid nanoparticles (gold, copper, and titania), within a catheterized arterial annulus under a robust magnetic f
