Avian schistosomes, mainly belonging to the genus Trichobilharzia, are the etiological agents of cercarial dermatitis in humans. The aims of this study were to report a human case of cercarial dermatitis contracted in a paddy field in a natural regeneration area in Tokyo, Japan, and identify the etiological agents of this case using molecular phylogenetic analyses. A snail survey was conducted between 2021 and 2023 in a rice paddy field where a case of cercarial dermatitis occurred, and molecular phylogenetic analyses of the furcocercariae and parasitized lymnaeid snails were performed based o

BACKGROUND: Emerging parasites pose increasing challenges at the interface of human, animal, and ecosystem health. Among these, Trichobilharzia spp., schistosomatid of migratory and resident waterfowl, can cause cercarial dermatitis (CD) when its larval stage (cercaria) accidentally penetrate human skin. While this parasite has been documented in several European countries, its presence in Portugal has remained unreported, leaving a critical gap in understanding potential zoonotic risks in local freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the presence of Trichobilharzia s

Indoplanorbis exustus, a pulmonate snail, is an important component of freshwater ecosystems and serves as the primary intermediate host for the larval stages of several medically and veterinary significant trematodes. However, data on its infection status and associated trematode species in the Phayao Lake area of northern Thailand are currently lacking. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of infection and identify the trematode species present in snails from this region. A total of 1290 snails were collected from Phayao Lake between November 2024 and February 2025 and examined usi

Limpets are abundant and ecologically important gastropods in intertidal and some riverine ecosystems, yet their role in trematode transmission remains comparatively understudied. We investigated trematode infection in intertidal limpets from Otago Harbour, New Zealand, using a molecular approach. Two species were identified: the avian schistosome Gigantobilharzia cf. patagonensis in Siphonaria australis and Acanthoparyphium sp. A metacercariae in Notoacmea sp. Gigantobilharzia cf. patagonensis was detected at all five sampling sites, with prevalence ranging from 2.6% to 100%. Haplotype networ

Cercarial dermatitis is an important occupational health problem among rice farmers in Assam and other parts of India. We surveyed 1657 paddy farmers from sixteen villages across four districts of Assam, Northeast India, to determine the prevalence of cercarial dermatitis. Of these, 555 (33.5%) reported dermatitis during the preceding three months, and a subset of affected farmers from Barpeta district showed a high proportion of moderate-to-severe disease, often complicated by secondary bacterial infection. Snail surveys were conducted in thirteen villages across eight districts. Examination

Swimmer's itch is caused by the accidental penetration of human skin by various species of avian schistosomes that naturally cycle in bird and snail hosts. Little is known about the ontogeny of avian schistosomes in their vertebrate hosts, especially in wild birds. Taking advantage of the abundance of common merganser (Mergus merganser) broods on northern Lower Peninsula lakes in Michigan, we obtained fecal samples from 97 common mergansers, focusing on ducklings (n = 75) of 13 different ages but also including birds that were 1 yr and older. Miracidia hatching from fecal samples were quantifi

Studies estimating genetic diversity and population structure in multi-host parasites are often constrained by temporally and spatially limited sampling. This study addresses these limitations by analyzing globally distributed samples of three congeneric avian schistosomes (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae: Trichobilharzia), including collections spanning 20 years archived at The Museum of Southwestern Biology, Parasites Division. The three species exhibited significant differences in population genetic parameters across one nuclear and two mitochondrial loci. Trichobilharzia querquedulae (TQ) main

Despite being considered non-endemic for human schistosomiasis, previous studies from India have described at least three endemic foci, with occasional case reports of autochthonous cases and cercarial dermatitis. We report a case of chronic haematuria in a 31-year-old male returning from Malawi due to Schistosoma haematobium.

In the context of a research program dealing with the symbiotic associations between aquatic snails and trematodes, we studied a host-parasite consortium in Lake El Nihuil (Mendoza, Argentina), a water body from Atuel river basin (Central Andes) in which recent outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis ('swimmer's itch') occurred. According to the morphological traits and molecular phylogenetic analyses (mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes), the gastropod host was assigned to the endemic genus Chilina. The snails hosted and released a schistosomatid brevifurcate apharingeate cercaria, whose phylogene

BACKGROUND: Cercarial dermatitis (CD), or swimmer's itch, is a water-borne allergic skin reaction caused by the penetration of the larval stages of bird schistosomes (cercariae) into the skin. Members of the genus Trichobilharzia are the primary causative agents of CD worldwide. Due to the increasing number of cases, CD is regarded as a (re)emerging disease. Outbreaks in recreational waters can significantly impact public health and local economies. Environmental monitoring of Trichobilharzia is crucial for outbreak prediction and public health management. However, conventional methods, such a

Avian blood flukes of the genus Trichobilharzia, the largest subgroup of the Schistosomatidae family, are of medical and veterinary importance as causative agents of avian schistosomiasis and human cercarial dermatitis. Despite their significance, molecular data on Trichobilharzia species from Southeast Asia remain limited, and no mitochondrial genomes have been reported to date. This study presents the first complete mitochondrial genome and nuclear ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene analysis of a Trichobilharzia sp. isolate (PYO) recovered from Radix (Lymnaea) rubiginosa in Phayao, Thailand, alongsid

OBJECTIVE: Cercarial dermatitis, often called swimmer’s itch, is a non-communicable skin condition caused by bird schistosomes. The host response is characterized by an early type I hypersensitivity reaction and a late phase of cutaneous inflammation, often leading to severe itching. Outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis in recreational waters can significantly impact public health. The aim of this present study was to describe the geographical distribution of reported cercarial dermatitis in Norway from 1980 to the end of 2023. METHODS: The study is based on random reports obtained from private p

Orientobilharziasis, caused by Orientobilharzia turkestanicum, is a zoonotic parasitic disease that leads to significant economic losses in livestock and cercarial dermatitis in humans. This study focuses on the molecular characterization and functional analysis of thioredoxin glutathione reductase (TGR) from O. turkestanicum, a key enzyme involved in the parasite’s antioxidant defense system. The full-length O. turkestanicum thioredoxin glutathione reductase (OtTGR) cDNA and O. turkestanicum thioredoxin glutathione reductase with selenocysteine (OtTGRsec) were cloned and expressed as recombin

Cercarial dermatitis (CD; swimmer's itch) is a re-emerging skin disease caused by avian schistosomes, including Trichobilharzia franki. Here, we present morphological, genetic, and experimental evidence confirming the involvement of T. franki in recent CD outbreaks across Czechia. Ocellate furcocercariae were collected from Radix auricularia at four sites and identified as T. franki through ITS1 sequencing. Despite minor morphological differences from previously reported specimens, all isolates belonged to the genetically uniform T. franki "auricularia" clade. Experimental infection of mice wi

BACKGROUND: Human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) is a clinical disease typically caused by skin-penetrative larvae of avian schistosomes. Its geographical epidemiology is firmly tied with that of infected freshwater intermediate snail hosts. To better understand the current distribution of HCD and its level of nuisance in the UK, we undertook a systematic literature review.
METHODS: Following PRIMSA guidelines, PubMed and Scopus databases were searched with keywords "human cercarial dermatitis" OR "swimmer's itch" AND "United Kingdom". Articles about imported cases of HCD, or HCD outside the UK,

BACKGROUND: Swimmer's itch, an allergic contact dermatitis caused by avian and mammalian blood flukes, is a parasitic infection affecting people worldwide. In particular, avian blood flukes of the genus Trichobilharzia are infamous for their role in swimmer's itch cases. These parasites infect waterfowl as a final host, but incidental infections by cercariae in humans are frequently reported. Upon accidental infections of humans, parasite larvae will be recognized by the immune system and destroyed, leading to painful itchy skin lesions. However, one species, Trichobilharzia regenti, can escap

We describe a severe case of swimmer's itch in Victoria with widespread bullous eruption, which is a rare manifestation of this condition and presented a diagnostic challenge. This is the first case reported in Victoria, having been previously reported in more northern parts of Australia; with climate change trends, swimmer's itch is likely to become increasingly common in southern parts of the region.
