[Significance of schistosome lectins in the host allergic reaction evoked by penetration of cercaria].

Cercarial dermatitis is a skin allergic response caused by larval stages (cercariae) of the trematode family Schistosomatidae. In the Czech Republic the main causative agents of the disease are bird schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia. In the past it was supposed that cercariae of animal schistosomes die soon after the penetration into the human skin. However, we observed a migration and partial development of T. szidati cercariae within a nonspecific (mouse) host. The initial development of parasites in mice was similar to that observed in a specific host (duck) as well as to that descr

Recovery of avian schistosome cercariae from water using penetration stimulant matrix with an unsaturated fatty acid.

Avian schistosome cercariae that emerge from aquatic snails can penetrate human skin causing cercarial dermatitis resulting in serious skin disease in sensitized and immunocompromised people. A trap developed for Schistosoma mansoni cercariae was tested for recovery of avian schistosome cercariae. A matrix with an unsaturated fatty acid, linoleic acid stimulates attachment and penetration of Trichobilharzia spp. cercariae, and the immobilized larvae can be subsequently visualized. The number of trapped cercariae exceeded by 3 to 7 times the number of larvae expected on the surface of the trap,

Schistosome cercariae as the causative agent of swimmer's itch in Iceland.

During late summer in 1995 to 1997, repeated outbreaks of maculopapular skin eruptions were noted on the legs of children after wading in the pond in the Family Park in Laugardalur, Reykjavík, Iceland. Clinical symptoms developing on the legs resembled those of cercarial dermatitis. An examination of Lymnaea peregra snails from this pond and from the adjacent Lake Tjornin resulted in detection of previously undescribed schistosome cercariae. This is the first report of schistosomes in Iceland and also the most northern occurrence of these parasites in Europe.

[Urticaria and parasites].

Urticaria has many etiology and during its exploration, it's important to mind about parasitic disease. The authors present briefly ten of them potentially associated with this eruption. For each disease (ascaridiosis, trichinellosis, fasciolosis, giardiosis, toxocarosis, anisakidosis, cercarial dermatitis, schistosomiasis, strongyloidosis, hydatidosis), they precise epidemiological situation for contamination and simple diagnosis approach.

Trichobilharzia regenti, a pathogen of the avian and mammalian central nervous systems.

The development of nasal avian schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia in their final host is poorly known. Therefore, an experimental infection of ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos f. dom.) by T. regenti was performed. The infection resulted in leg paralysis and orientation/balance disorders of birds. The examination of the duck's spinal cord and brain confirmed the presence of developing parasites in pre-patent as well as patent periods. The absence of the worms in other tissues strongly supports our hypothesis that the parasite migrates through the central nervous system (CNS) to its final lo

Lead poisoning and parasitism in a flock of mute swans (Cygnus olor) in Scotland.

Increased mortality in a flock of non-breeding mute swans (Cygnus olor) on a Scottish loch was investigated. Postmortem examinations were carried out on eight adult and six immature swans. The commonest cause of death, found in eight birds, was lead poisoning associated with the ingestion of large lead fishing weights. Heavy parasitic burdens were found in five immature birds, involving combinations of the gizzard worm Amidostomum species, the thornyheaded worms Polymorphus minutus and Profilicollis anatis, and the tracheal trematode Orchipedum tracheicola. Other parasites of lesser significan

The epidemiology of cercarial dermatitis and its association with limnological characteristics of a northern Michigan lake.

Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is an annoying inflammatory response to penetration of skin by non-human schistosome parasites while swimming or wading in lakes. The purpose of this survey was to identify risk factors for cercarial dermatitis and to determine whether limnological characteristics of the lake were associated with development of the condition. Starting 1 June 1993, an active case surveillance system was established in the communities around Walloon Lake, Michigan, which continued until 30 August 1993; controls were randomly selected weekly during the same time period throug

Cercaria-schistosomulum surface transformation of Trichobilharzia szidati and its putative immunological impact.

Schistosome cercariae of the genus Trichobilharzia are the causative agent of swimmers' itch. In order to characterize the changes in parasites during and after the penetration of the host skin, in vitro and in vivo (in ducks and mice) transformations of T. szidati cercariae to schistosomula were performed. Ultrastructural observation revealed that cercariae possess a simple outer tegumental membrane with a thick glycocalyx. As with human schistosomes, the latter structure disappears during transformation and a new double membrane with putative protective function is formed. Our biochemical an

Public health importance and risk factors for cercarial dermatitis associated with swimming in Lake Leman at Geneva, Switzerland.

Fifteen cohorts of healthy bathers were recruited at four Lake Leman beaches between 3 July and 23 August 1996 to assess the public health importance of cercarial dermatitis in Geneva, Switzerland. Telephone follow-up interviews were carried out after 2-7 days. Overall, 153 bathers out of 555 reported probable cercarial dermatitis at follow-up. Median daily attack rate was 27.7% (2.2-57.7%). Of the cases, 11.1% noticed more than 30 skin lesions, 19.6% described severe itching, 50.3% used a drug treatment, 3.9% visited a doctor and 15% claimed they would reduce their bathing activities. Aquarium dermatitis: cercarial dermatitis in an aquarist.

A 33-year-old man presented with very itchy red papules on the back of his hands and forearms. These papules appeared about 90 min after he had cleaned his aquarium in which he kept native fish and watersnails. He had obtained the watersnails some weeks before from a nearby pond. Examination of water from the aquarium revealed cercariae. The clinical diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis was corroborated. Cercarial dermatitis has repeatedly been seen in swimmers but not in aquarists keeping fish in a home aquarium.

Incrimination of Schistosoma spindale as a causative agent of farmer's dermatitis in Assam with a note on liver pathology in mice.

Cercarial dermatitis of paddy field workers in Assam is very common. However, it is not known which species of animal schistosomes, is its causative agent in Assam. Studies in two dermatitis affected villages of Dibrugarh district revealed that cercariae of Schistosoma spindale were involved in its aetiology. Indoplanorbis exustus was the only snail species found infected with apharyngeate brevifurcate schistosome cercarie. Experimental infection of the laboratory animals with the dermatitis causing schistosome cercariae revealed that duckling and chicken were refractory to infection. However,

Studies on animal schistosomes in Peninsular Malaysia: record of naturally infected animals and additional hosts of Schistosoma spindale.

Surveillance studies on cercarial dermatitis were carried out in paddy growing areas in Peninsular Malaysia. It was observed that dermatitis in paddy planters occurred in paddy fields which were cultivated using animals such as bafflos or fields where domestic animals were allowed to graze during the off planting season as these animals harbored the parasite. The causative agent of cercarial dermatitis was Schistosoma spindale. A total of 215 small mammals trapped from Alor Setar and 126 trapped from Labu were examined for the schistosome. In Alor Setar Bandicota indica, Rattus argentiventer a

[Cercarial dermatitis in Europe: a new public health problem?].

Cercarial dermatitis is a parasitic impasse that has worldwide distribution. The condition manifests itself as a highly pruriginous skin rash and is due to penetration of the dermis by larval stages (furcocercariae) of avian trematodes. Many species may be responsible for this disease. In Europe the genus Trichobilharzia is widely represented, in particular by the species T. ocellata; the definitive host is the duck (Anas platyrhinchos); the intermediate hosts are snails of the genus Lymnea (L. ovata or L. stagnalis). In France, cases of cercarial dermatitis were reported in June and July 1994

Outbreak of schistosomiasis among travelers returning from Mali, West Africa.

Schistosomiasis in travelers often remains unrecognized because doctors are unfamiliar with the clinical presentation and diagnosis of this imported disease. We describe the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics associated with an outbreak of schistosomiasis among nonimmune travelers. Of 30 travelers in two consecutive groups, 29 who had swum in freshwater pools in the Dogon area of Mali, West Africa, were followed for 12 months. Twenty-eight (97%) of those 29 became infected; 10 (36%) of the 28 had cercarial dermatitis, and in 15 (54%), Katayama fever developed. Eggs were

[Cercaria dermatitis (swimmer's itch). Case report of cercaria dermatitis caused by Trichobilharzia (Digena, Schistosomatidae)].

A 63-year-old woman developed a pruritic exanthema on the extremities after one hour of work in her garden pond in Planegg, Southern Bavaria. As the appropriate vectors (ducks and snails) were present, we made the tentative diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch). By different serological methods (cercarial fluorescent antibody test, cercarial Hüllen reaction, circumoval precipitin test) antibodies against cercariae could be demonstrated in the serum of the patient 14 days later. Cercarial dermatitis appears worldwide, but in Central Europe the disease is often not recognized.

Investigation of the life cycle and adult morphology of the avian blood fluke Austrobilharzia variglandis (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) from Connecticut.

This study was undertaken to expand the current knowledge of the life cycle and adult morphology of the avian schistosome Austrobilharzia variglandis, which causes a marine cercarial dermatitis in New England. The specific objectives were to: (1) investigate the seasonality of the infection in the molluscan intermediate host, Ilyanassa obsoleta; (2) determine which bird species are acting as natural definitive hosts for the parasite; and (3) characterize the morphology of the parasite using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-thousand individuals of I. obsoleta were collected each month fo

[The ecological prerequisites for the spread of schistosomal dermatitis (cercariasis) in Moscow and the Moscow area].

Cases of schistosomiasis (cercarial dermatitis) were recorded in humans in Moscow in 1991. The authors analyze the ecologic conditions conducive to dissemination of cercariasis in 17 natural and artificial water bodies of Moscow and the Moscow region. They point out that high contamination of the water bodies with organic communal wastes and an abundant overgrowth of macrophytes favor the development of molluscs, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma, and promote the increase of the populations thereof. High number of Lymnaea ovata, L. auticularia, L. stagnalis, Planorbarius corneus, P. planorbis,

[Occurrence of swimmer's itch in Tyrol].

Cercariae from trematodes of birds are capable of penetrating human skin causing a dermatitis, called swimmer's itch. In 1992, after a hot dry summer there was a marked increase in the incidence of cercarial dermatitis in Austria. Although the increased incidence of this complaint can be quite worrisome for the population, the occurrence of swimmer's itch can, in fact, generally be seen as harmless. Cercarial dermatitis responds well to treatment with topical antihistamines or cortisone; even without medication the skin rash heals within 2-3 weeks. The effectiveness of various preventive measu
