Identification of a major causative agent of human cercarial dermatitis, Trichobilharzia franki (Müller and Kimmig 1994), in southern England and its evolutionary relationships with other European populations.

BACKGROUND: Trichobilharzia is the most species rich and widely distributed genus of schistosomes and is known throughout Europe and North America as an agent of human cercarial dermatitis. The disease is caused by an acute allergic reaction in the skin that develops as a consequence of repeated contact with water containing schistosomatid cercariae. However, despite historical outbreaks of the disease, there are no published records of accurately identified Trichobilharzia species from the UK. METHODS: Two hundred Radix auricularia (L.) were sampled from a recreational fishing lake in Hampsh

Cercarial dermatitis, a neglected allergic disease.

Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is a common non-communicable water-borne disease. It is caused by penetration of the skin by larvae (cercariae) of schistosomatid flukes and develops as a maculopapular skin eruption after repeated contacts with the parasites. The number of outbreaks of the disease is increasing, and cercarial dermatitis can therefore be considered as an emerging problem. Swimmer's itch is mostly associated with larvae of the bird schistosomes of Trichobilharzia spp. Recent results have shown that mammalian infections (including man) manifest themselves as an allergic reac

An outbreak of acute Schistosoma mansoni Schistosomiasis in a nonendemic area of Brazil: a report on 50 cases, including 5 with severe clinical manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Acute schistosomiasis is a systemic hypersensitivity reaction against the migrating schistosomula and eggs. In this report, we describe an atypical outbreak of the disease with severe cases. Transmission occurred in a nonendemic area of Brazil, which became a new focus of transmission due to the in-migration of infected workers. METHODS: From December 2009 to March 2010, the 50 patients with acute schistosomiasis (group 1) bathed in a swimming pool supplied by a brook on a country estate in the outskirts of São João del Rei, Brazil. Thirty other subjects (group 2) living in the sa

The schistosoma granuloma: friend or foe?

Infection of man with Schistosoma species of trematode parasite causes marked chronic morbidity. Individuals that become infected with Schistosomes may develop a spectrum of pathology ranging from mild cercarial dermatitis to severe tissue inflammation, in particular within the liver and intestines, which can lead to life threatening hepatosplenomegaly. It is well established that the etiopathology during schistosomiasis is primarily due to an excessive or unregulated inflammatory response to the parasite, in particular to eggs that become trapped in various tissue. The eggs forms the foci of

Less travelled roads in clinical immunology and allergy: drug reactions and the environmental influence.

Allergy and clinical immunology are examples of areas of knowledge in which working hypotheses are dominant over mechanistic understanding. As such, sometimes scientific efforts follow major streams and overlook some epidemiologically prevalent conditions that thus become underestimated by the research community. For this reason, we welcome the present issue of Clinical Reviews in Allergy and Immunology that is dedicated to uncommon themes in clinical immunology and allergy. First, comprehensive discussions are provided for allergy phenomena of large potential impact in clinical practice such

Discovery-based studies of schistosome diversity stimulate new hypotheses about parasite biology.

This review provides an update of ongoing efforts to expand our understanding of the diversity inherent within the Schistosomatidae, the parasites responsible for causing schistosomiasis and cercarial dermatitis. By revealing more of the species present, particularly among understudied avian schistosomes, we gain increased understanding of patterns of schistosome diversification, and their abilities to colonize new hosts and habitats. Schistosomes reveal a surprising ability to switch into new snail and vertebrate host species, into new intrahost habitats, and may adopt novel body forms in the

Survey of Migratory Birds (Anatidae: Anas platyrhynchos) for Schistosome Parasites from Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to survey birds' schistosomes in migratory birds (Anatidae: Anas platyrhynchos) which are the source of the disease in Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran. METHODS: A number of mallards were bought from the markets of hunted birds. The respiratory tracts (nasal mucosa) and intestinal blood vessels were studied for adult worms. The nasal mucosa was separated and observed by a microscope. In order to separate the visceral schistosomes, after separating intestine, vessel mesenteric was studied under the lamp light and then in saline. The parasite sampl

Vesical paragonimiasis diagnosed by histopathology: a case report.

Vesical paragonimiasis is an extremely rare form of ectopic infestation caused by Paragonimus spp. We reported a case of vesical paragonimiasis associated with urinary symptoms but without history of respiratory symptoms or cercarial dermatitis. The diagnosis was made by histopathological examination of the surgical specimens of the vesical masses. Identification of the species by morphometric analysis of the fluke body sections indicated that the vesical lesion was caused by Paragonimus. Postsurgical medication with the antiparasitic drug praziquantel was applied regularly, and the patient ex

Two avian schistosome cercariae from Nepal, including a Macrobilharzia-like species from Indoplanorbis exustus.

As part of a global survey of schistosomes, a total of 16,109 freshwater snails representing 14 species were collected from lakes, ponds, rivers, rice fields and swamps mostly in the Terai region of southern Nepal. Only two snails were found to harbor avian schistosome cercariae even though Nepal is well known for its rich avian diversity. One schistosome infection was from an individual of Radix luteola and on the basis of phylogenetic analyses using 28S rDNA and cox1 sequences, grouped as a distinctive and previously unknown lineage within Trichobilharzia. This genus is the most speciose wit

INTRODUCTION: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a devastating disease with complete collapse of the femoral head often reported in greater than 70% of patients within 3 to 4 years of diagnosis. Early intervention prior to collapse may improve the chance of success of joint preserving procedures. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether core decompression with mesenchymal stem cells combined with bisphosphonate therapy can improve the clinical outcomes and reduce the risk of hip replacement when compared to treatment with bisphosphonate therapy alone. Characterization of microRNAs from Orientobilharzia turkestanicum, a neglected blood fluke of human and animal health significance.

The neglected blood flukes Orientobilharzia spp. belonging to the Platyhelminthes, infect animals in a number of countries of the world, and cause cercarial dermatitis in humans, as well as significant diseases and even death in economically-important animals. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are now considered to be a key mechanism of gene regulation. Herein, we investigated the global miRNA expression profile of adult O. turkestanicum using next-generation sequencing technology and real-time quantitative PCR, to gain further information on the role of these molecules in host invasion and the parasitic lif

Avian schistosomes and human cercarial dermatitis in a wildlife refuge in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran.

Each year, hundreds of aquatic migratory birds migrate from northern hemisphere to the Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. Little information is available on prevalence and density of schistosomes in water birds in Iran and around the world. The objectives of this study were to determine definitive and intermediate hosts of avian schistosomes as well as to assess human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) in a wildlife refuge in Mazandaran Province. Of 1106 examined people, 589 (53.2%) had maculopapular rashes mainly on feet but also on hand. The majority of cases were adults and local residents. Of 260

Pathogenicity of Trichobilharzia spp. for Vertebrates.

Bird schistosomes, besides being responsible for bird schistosomiasis, are known as causative agents of cercarial dermatitis. Cercarial dermatitis develops after repeated contact with cercariae, mainly of the genus Trichobilharzia, and was described as a type I, immediate hypersensitivity response, followed by a late phase reaction. The immune response is Th2 polarized. Primary infection leads to an inflammatory reaction that is insufficient to eliminate the schistosomes and schistosomula may continue its migration through the body of avian as well as mammalian hosts. However, reinfections of

Species identification of birds nasal trichobilharzia in sari, north of iran.

BACKGROUND: Cercarial dermatitis is known as an endemic parasitic disease in North of Iran, a hypersensitive skin reaction to the penetration of nonhuman schistosome larvae into human skin. In recent studies in this region, final and intermediate hosts were recognized and Trichobilharzia was identified as the main causative agent of cercarial dermatitis in this region, but to date the parasite species haven't been identified. Therefore this study was performed to species identification of nasal Trichobilharzia in infected birds for the first time. METHODS: A total of 45 Anas clypeata birds id

Molecular evidence of Trichobilharzia franki Müller and Kimmig, 1994 (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) in Radix auricularia from Central Italy.

The molecular approach was used to identify the first focus of human cercarial dermatitis occurring during the spring-summer season in Vico Lake, a Natural Reserve Area in Central Italy. Sequences of 586 bp length of the partial region of 18S and ITS-1 ribosomal DNA from cercariae were obtained. They were compared with extant GenBank sequences of Trichobilharzia. Accordingly, the ocellate furcocercariae were identified as belonging to the species Trichobilharzia franki Müller and Kimmig, 1994. Sequences of the 18S (712 bp) and ITS-2 (218 bp) rDNA gene of snails belonging to the family Lymnaeid

Cathepsins B1 and B2 of Trichobilharzia SPP., bird schistosomes causing cercarial dermatitis.

Trichobilharzia regenti and T. szidati are schistosomes that infect birds. although T. regenti/T. szidati can only complete their life cycle in specific bird hosts (waterfowl), their larvae-cercariae are able to penetrate, transform and then migrate as schistosomula in nonspecific hosts (e.g., mouse, man). Peptidases are among the key molecules produced by these schistosomes that enable parasite invasion and survival within the host and include cysteine peptidases such as cathepsins B1 and B2. These enzymes are indispensable bio-catalysts in a number of basal biological processes and host-para

Aminothiophenedicarboxamides and dicyanothiopheneacetamides as effective synthetic molluscicides against Indoplanorbis exustus snail.

New thiophenedicarboxamide 2a-c and dicyanothiopheneacetamide 3a-c derivatives were synthesized and their bioactivity against Indoplanorbis exustus snails was evaluated. The I. exustus snail is a serious host of parasite of genus Schistosoma which infects cattle. Thus reduces livestock productivity and also acts as a source of cercarial dermatitis in human beings. The results obtained show a significant (P < 0.05) molluscicidal activity with LC(50) = 0.6043 ppm for compound 2a and LC(50) = 0.6511 ppm for compound 3a.

Genetic differentiation of cercariae infrapopulations of the avian schistosome Trichobilharzia szidati based on RAPD markers and mitochondrial cox1 gene.

Avian schistosome Trichobilharzia szidati is a member of the largest genus within the family Schistosomatidae (Trematoda). Population genetic structure of Trichobilharzia spp. schistosomes, causative agents of cercarial dermatitis in humans, has not been studied yet. The knowledge of the genetic structure of trichobilharzian populations is essential for understanding the host-parasite coevolutionary dynamics and epidemiology strategies. Here we examined genetic diversity in three geographically isolated local populations of T. szidati cercariae inhabiting Russia based on nuclear (randomly ampl

Secretory glands in cercaria of the neuropathogenic schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti - ultrastructural characterization, 3-D modelling, volume and pH estimations.

BACKGROUND: Cercariae of schistosomes employ bioactive molecules for penetration into their hosts. These are released from specialized unicellular glands upon stimuli from host skin. The glands were previously well-described in the human pathogen Schistosoma mansoni. As bird schistosomes can also penetrate human skin and cause cercarial dermatitis, our aim was to characterize the architecture and ultrastructure of glands in the neurotropic bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti and compare it with S. mansoni. In the context of different histolytic enzymes used by these two species, we focuse
