Molecular systematics of the avian schistosome genus Trichobilharzia (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) in North America.

Trichobilharzia is a genus of threadlike schistosomes with a cosmopolitan distribution in birds. Species of Trichobilharzia achieve notoriety as major etiological agents of cercarial dermatitis, or swimmer's itch. There are 40 species described in the literature, for which the majority lacks molecular sequence information. To better understand the phylogenetic relationships, diversity, species boundaries, host use, and geographic distribution of this genus better, we surveyed 378 birds and over 10,000 snails from North America. The phylogenetic analysis was based on nuclear 18S, 28S rDNA, inte

Cercarial dermatitis in the Netherlands caused by Trichobilharzia spp.

Outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis which occurred in recreational lakes in the Netherlands were studied and a method for direct rapid detection of the parasite Trichobilharzia in water samples was developed. A standardized questionnaire with questions on health complaints and exposure was distributed to individuals who developed symptoms of cercarial dermatitis after visiting fresh water lakes. Snails from the suspected lakes were examined for the presence of Trichobilharzia by microscopy and PCR. Water samples were concentrated by filtration and examined by PCR. Water quality was tested accord

Trichobilharzia spp. in natural conditions in Annecy Lake, France.

Annecy Lake is a well-known focus of human cercarial dermatitis in France. Identification of the parasites, however, was not performed in the past. Previous studies suspected two species, Trichobilharzia franki and Trichobilharzia regenti, based on the presence of parasites in mallards and/or morphological identification of snails emitting ocellate furcocercariae. Following a standardized molecular approach, we studied snails and furcocercariae and compared their haplotypes with those deposited in GenBank. The selected markers were the second internal transcribed spacer ITS-2 for the snails an

Cercarial dermatitis in the UK.

'Swimmer's itch' or cercarial dermatitis (CD) results from an immunological reaction to free-swimming non-human schistosome parasites released from aquatic snails. Affected bathers develop a self-limiting, pruritic, macular or papular eruption shortly after leaving the water. The condition is well-recognized in continental Europe, Asia and America, but has not to date been recorded in the UK.

Penetration of Trichobilharzia cercariae into mammals: dangerous or negligible event?

Bird schistosomes and cases of human cercarial dermatitis occur worldwide, but the number of cases is not monitored. Experiments with two schistosomes, namely Trichobilharzia szidati and T. regenti, show that they possess potent tools to penetration bird and mammalian skin, as well as exhibit species-specific migration patterns within vertebrate bodies. Therefore, the infections may affect different organs/tissues e.g. lungs or spinal cord. In this minireview, the adaptations and pathogenic effects of bird schistosomes in experimental mammals are discussed, and some ideas/hypotheses on risks t

Effects of climate change on animal and zoonotic helminthiases.

Current knowledge of animal and zoonotic helminthiases in which effects of climate change have been detected is reviewed. Climate variables are able to affect the prevalence, intensity and geographical distribution of helminths, directly influencing free-living larval stages and indirectly influencing mainly invertebrate, but also vertebrate, hosts. The impact of climate change appears to be more pronounced in trematodes, and is mainly shown by increased cercarial production and emergence associated with global warming. Fascioliasis, schistosomiasis (S. japonicum) and cercarial dermatitis caus

Antibody responses induced by Trichobilharzia regenti antigens in murine and human hosts exhibiting cercarial dermatitis.

Cercariae of bird schistosomes (genus Trichobilharzia) are able to penetrate the skin of mammals (noncompatible hosts), including humans, and cause a Th2-associated inflammatory cutaneous reaction termed cercarial dermatitis. The present study measured the antibody reactivity and antigen specificity of sera obtained after experimental infection of mice and natural infection of humans. Sera from mice re-infected with T. regenti showed a bias towards the development of antigen-specific IgM and IgG1 antibodies and elevated levels of total serum IgE, indicative of a Th2 polarized immune response.

Orientobilharzia species: neglected parasitic zoonotic agents.

Parasites of the genus Orientobilharzia belong to Platyhelminthes, Trematoda, Digenea, Schistosomatidae, and the type species is Orientobilharzia turkestanicum. O. turkestanicum was first described by Skrjabin from cattle in Russian Turkestan in 1913. Adult worms of Orientobilharzia species live in the portal veins or intestinal veins of cattle, sheep and other mammals, and often cause orientobilharziasis in China, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran in Asia, and Russia and Turkey in Europe. More importantly, the cercariae of Orientobilharzia species can infect humans and often cause cercari

Cream formulations protecting against cercarial dermatitis by Trichobilharzia.

Dermatitis caused by penetrating bird schistosome cercariae is an emerging global public health problem. Infections may be prevented by the use of topical formulations that inhibit cercarial skin penetration. We evaluated nine water resistant formulations by exposing treated arms of volunteers to Trichobilharzia szidati cercariae. Six formulations protected from cercarial invasion. However, after immersion of the treated skin in water (2 x 20 min), only two formulations offered full protection: (1) Safe Sea, a cream protecting against jelly fish, (2) niclosamide in water resistant sun protecti

Cercarial dermatitis in central India: an emerging health problem among tribal communities.

Although cercarial dermatitis is an emerging disease world-wide, cases of such dermatitis may often go undiagnosed, especially in communities that are affected by various skin infections. Between August 2001 and July 2002, 1336 individuals from tribal villages in central India were examined for dermatitis. Skin scrapings were collected and examined for Sarcoptes scabiei and each subject's response to antiscabies treatment was recorded. Freshwater snails were collected from the local ponds used for bathing, and examined for cercariae. The recorded prevalence of dermatitis ranged between 2.1% an

Cercarial dermatitis and lake eutrophication in south-central Chile.

Cercarial dermatitis is caused by exposure to the cercariae of schistosome species which have birds or mammals as their definitive hosts. A public alarm was raised in the summer of 2004 when this parasitic disease was observed for the first time in south-central Chile at Laguna Chica de San Pedro (36 degrees 51'' S, 73 degrees 05'' W). Swimmers at this eutrophic lake were surveyed in order to estimate the amount of cercarial dermatitis in the area; participants were observed during the summers of 2004 and 2005 for clinical signs of cercarial dermatitis and 25 Chilina dombeyana snails were coll

The complete mitochondrial genome of the bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti (Platyhelminthes: Digenea), causative agent of cercarial dermatitis.

The complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of the neuropathogenic bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti was fully sequenced in order to develop molecular markers for future diagnostic, molecular ecological, population, and phylogenetic studies. The genome was 14,838 bp in length, with a 68.4% AT bias in protein coding regions. A repeat element (3 x 184 bp) between trnV and trnW distinguished a single short noncoding region. As 9 of 14 genera of schistosomes parasitize birds, future characterization of their mt genomes is desirable for species-specific and strain- or population-specific diagnost

Schistosomes causing cercarial dermatitis: a mini-review of current trends in systematics and of host specificity and pathogenicity.

The human infection known under the names cercarial dermatitis or swimmers' itch is generally associated with swimming in lakes all over the world, however, a number of outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis developing in salt or brackish waters are also reported. The disease presents as allergic reaction which is able to trap and eliminate the parasites in the skin. However, the infection can be linked to more than skin symptoms under certain circumstances. Recent studies on bird schistosomes have shown that during primary infections of noncompatible hosts (mice) the parasites may migrate through

Cercarial dermatitis in Austria: questionnaires as useful tools to estimate risk factors?

Cercarial dermatitis is a worldwide occurring skin disease characterized by itching and skin papulation. It is caused by cercariae of the fluke family Schistosomatidae. In the tropics and subtropics species of the genus Schistosoma can cause severe diseases of man. However, several genera (e.g. Trichobilharzia, Bilharziella) of medical significance are prevalent in Europe as well; they are also known as "bird schistosomes", because waterfowl is the final host. Pulmonate snails act as intermediate hosts. Humans are accidental hosts; they get infested by penetration of the cercariae into the ski

Trichobilharzia regenti: the developmental differences in natural and abnormal hosts.

Trichobilharzia regenti is a bird nasal parasite causing human cercarial dermatitis. Schistosomula are able to migrate via the bird nervous system and then, they mature and lay eggs in the nasal cavity. To some extent they can also migrate and develop in mammals. The present study has shown the developmental differences of T. regenti in the natural (ducks) and the abnormal (mice; inbred strains BALB/c, SCID) hosts. The study describes the following parameters of developing worms: length and width of the body, length and content of the intestine, development of the reproductive organs and chara

Molluscan and vertebrate immune responses to bird schistosomes.

There is a growing understanding of risks posed by human contact with the cercariae of bird schistosomes. In general, there are no fundamental biological differences between human and bird schistosomes in terms of their interactions with snail and vertebrate hosts. The penetration of host surfaces is accompanied by the release of penetration gland products and the shedding of highly antigenic surface components (miracidial ciliated plates and cercarial glycocalyx) which trigger host immune reactions. New surface structures are formed during transformation: the tegument of mother sporocysts and

[Swimmer's itch in Landmannalaugar, Iceland].

Swimmer's itch (SI) or human cercarial dermatitis is caused by free-swimming larvae of bird parasites of the family Schistosomatidae (Trematoda) which have penetrated thorough the skin. Sometimes, mainly during first infections, the larvae do not cause any symptoms but if trapped by the immune system of the host each larva causes a maculopapular eruption. So far, five bird schistosome species have been reported in Iceland. Cercariae are shed by the freshwater snail Radix peregra but adults live in anseriform birds; one nasal Trichobilharzia species occurs in the nasal cavity of mallards, two v
