Fifty-three fingers in 52 children were divided into 2 groups, operative and nonoperative, after fingernail crush injury. Criteria for inclusion into the study were an intact nail and nail margin with subungual hematoma and no previous nail abnormality. We observed the healing process under rigid external fixation after Salter-Harris type-1 or type-2 physeal separation at the proximal tibia in immature rabbits. Metaphyseal vessels grew across the gap with little delay; the site of separation then came to lie in the metaphysis and was bridged by endochondral ossification. An 87-year-old female presented with a 3 month history of hyperkeratotic nodules on her left shin. An initial clinical and histological diagnosis of multiple squamous cell carcinomas on the left shin was made. Review of the biopsy, however, showed hypertrophic lichen planus with pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. Typical lichen planus was seen affecting the oral mucosa, nails and skin elsewhere.

We describe a patient with painful enlargement and severe nail deformity of both great toes. The patient furthermore presented with some minor diagnostic criteria for psoriasis such as nail pitting and had a positive family history of the disease. In the recent literature, such cases have been recognized as a new entity termed psoriatic onycho-pachydermo-periostitis (POPP). In this case report, POPP is discussed in relationship to other forms of psoriatic arthropathy and with special emphasis regarding its diagnostic criteria and therapeutic implications.

Pachyonychia congenita is an uncommon autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression. Symmetrical nail hypertrophy, present in nearly all cases, is accompanied by dyskeratosis and dysplasia of other ectodermal tissues. This article reviews the genetics, clinical manifestations, histopathology, and treatment of pachyonychia congenita. Many clinical features have been reported in association with this syndrome. From a review of the literature, we propose criteria for the diagnosis of pachyonychia congenita using the more important of these clinical manifestations.

This study identifies skin and nail complications other than pressure ulcers after spinal cord injury and correlate these complications to the level of injury. A prospective study was performed at the time of 679 annual spinal cord injury clinic visits from 1988 to 1991 at which time the skin and nails were examined for changes or other lesions. Clinical skin thickening and nail hypertrophy were the most frequent findings. Skin thickening occurred in 57.9% of cervical injuries, 31.6% of higher thoracic injuries, 23.6% of lower thoracic injuries, and 16.0% of thoracolumbar injuries, p < .0001.

A case of a 7-month-old boy with bilateral symmetrical congenital hypertrophy of the lateral nail folds of the hallux is described. The body showed no other skin symptoms. The types of ingrowing nails in infancy are discussed. A partial remission of the disease after 1 year was observed.

We report on two patients who exhibit the typical features of the rare Zimmermann-Laband syndrome such as gingival fibromatosis, swelling of perioral tissues, nail hypo/aplasia, and abnormalities of terminal phalanges. The older patient suffers from epileptic seizures and shows osseous mandibular hypertrophy, two maxillary mesiodentes and lumbar spondylodysplasia. In the 2nd patient, a 3 year old male, the characteristic morphological features are already present.

The microcirculation was measured by nail-fold capillary video microscopy in 21 patients (12 men, 9 women; mean age 54.7 [29-74] years) with acromegaly. Levels of growth hormone (12.0-71.7 microU/ml) and of somatomedin C (2.4-10.5 IU/ml) were elevated in 10 patients, despite preceding treatment. This paper reports a case study of a 10-year-old girl exhibiting symptoms of a Zimmermann-Laband syndrome (ZLS), including an ocular involvement not previously observed. In addition to the case reported, we have also discovered 21 patients described in the literature. Major clinical findings, defined as being present in more than 75% of the cases under discussion, are presented.

Monkey digits were used experimentally to demonstrate the pathologic anatomy of nail deformities and the results of treatment using full and partial thickness nail matrix grafts. Seventy-five human nail deformities were evaluated and treated. In both the experimental and clinical groups, microscopic hypertrophy of the superficial epithelial elements underlying the deformed nail existed. A follow-up of treatment of nail deformities indicated that nail matrix grafts, both full and partial thickness, are beneficial when the defect involves the sterile matrix and the proximal nail fold.
