This report provides a review of the cadmium exposure situation in Sweden and updates the information on health risk assessment according to recent studies on the health effects of cadmium. The report focuses on the health effects of low cadmium doses and the identification of high-risk groups. The diet is the main source of cadmium exposure in the Swedish nonsmoking general population. The average daily dietary intake is about 15 micrograms/day, but there are great individual variations due to differences in energy intake and dietary habits. It has been shown that a high fiber diet and a diet

Mapping the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Continuum of Care Across the Military Health System.

INTRODUCTION: Although a leading cause of developmental disability in the United States, many individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) do not receive a timely diagnosis, are misdiagnosed, or are never diagnosed. Prevention, diagnosis, and clinical management of FASD have not been previously studied in the U.S. Military Health System (MHS), where nearly 1 million of the nation's children receive health care. To address this gap, we undertook an environmental scan of the clinical guidelines, services, programs, educational resources, and policies within the MHS pertaining to alc

Role of Drinking Attitudes and Trait Impulsivity in Prenatal Alcohol Craving and Consumption in Mothers of Reproductive Age.

Recognizing the severe consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), the present study explored the role of drinking attitudes, trait impulsivity, and decision-making toward instant gratification in alcohol craving and consumption during pregnancy among mothers of reproductive age. Utilizing participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk (N = 141), we first categorized mothers into three groups: those who neither craved nor consumed alcohol during their last pregnancy, those who craved but did not consume, and those who craved and consumed al

Sexual dimorphism in lung transcriptomic adaptations in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Current fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) studies primarily focus on alcohol's actions on the fetal brain although respiratory infections are a leading cause of morbidity/mortality in newborns. The limited studies examining the pulmonary adaptations in FASD demonstrate decreased surfactant protein A and alveolar macrophage phagocytosis, impaired differentiation, and increased risk of Group B streptococcal pneumonia with no study examining sexual dimorphism in adaptations. We hypothesized that developmental alcohol exposure in pregnancy will lead to sexually dimorphic fetal lung morpholog

Ethanol induces craniofacial defects in Bmp mutants independent of nkx2.3 by elevating cranial neural crest cell apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) describes a wide range of neurological defects and craniofacial malformations associated with prenatal ethanol exposure. While there is growing evidence for a genetic component to FASD, little is known of the cellular mechanisms underlying these ethanol-sensitive loci in facial development. Endoderm morphogenesis to form lateral protrusions called pouches is one key mechanism in facial development. We have previously shown that multiple members of the Bone Morphogenetic Pathway (Bmp) signaling pathway, a key regulator of pouch formation, inte

Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations Leading the Way in Child Health Research.

Historically, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research in Australia has adhered to Western research paradigms and contributed to the adverse impacts of colonisation. However, recent developments driven by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and scholars, and development of ethical guidelines for research, have promoted a more inclusive and collaborative research landscape. In this study, published papers and internal documents arising from a long-term partnership between Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre (MWRC) and the University of Sydney (USYD) from 2009 to 2023 were an

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and the Courts: How England and Wales Could Benefit From Following an Australian Model.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a set of symptoms and signs that may follow from exposure of the unborn child to alcohol during pregnancy. Characterised by cognitive and behavioural impairments, one secondary outcome from FASD, is encounters with the criminal justice system (CJS). In some countries, for example, England and Wales, it seems likely that many cases are missed at this point and, thus, courts are at risk of making unsafe judgements. We could learn a lot from countries where services are generally more used to dealing with FASD. Australia is one such country.

Identifying novel heterozygous PI4KA variants in fetal abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of PI4KA-related disorders are characterized by considerable variability, predominantly featuring neurological impairments, gastrointestinal symptoms, and a combined immunodeficiency. The aim of this study was to delineate the novel spectrum of PI4KA variants detected prenatally and to assess their influence on fetal development. METHODS: A thorough fetal ultrasound screening was conducted, supplemented by both antenatal and post-abortion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. Novel PI4KA variants were detected through clinical Whole exon sequencing

Choice Behaviors and Prefrontal-Hippocampal Coupling Are Disrupted in a Rat Model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are characterized by a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioral impairments. Determining how temporally specific alcohol exposure (AE) affects neural circuits is crucial to understanding the FASD phenotype. Third trimester AE can be modeled in rats by administering alcohol during the first two postnatal weeks, which damages the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus (HPC), structures whose functional interactions are required for working memory and executive function. Therefore, we hypothesized that AE during this period would impair workin

Regional hippocampal thinning and gyrification abnormalities and associated cognition in children with prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) impacts hippocampal structure and function, contributing to deficits in memory and decision-making in affected individuals. Here, we evaluate hippocampal anomalies in children with PAE and an unexposed comparison group using advanced MRI methods that characterize hippocampal curvature and thickness. METHODS: Participants, ages 8 to 16 years, included children with PAE (n = 48) and an unexposed comparison group (n = 46) who underwent a dysmorphology exam, neuropsychological assessment, and an MRI scan. Height, weight, head circumference, and dysmorph

Preconception Paternal Alcohol Consumption Elicits Postnatal Changes in Neural Retinas of the Offspring.

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the impact of preconception paternal alcohol consumption (PPAC) on retinal function and morphology in PPAC-offspring. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD)-related ocular defects caused by maternal alcohol exposure has been well investigated, but the influence of PPAC on offspring eyes remains unknown. METHODS: Adult C57BL/6J male mice were exposed to either 10% ethanol or water (control) for six weeks and bred to naïve females. Dark-adapted retinal light responses at two, four, and six months old were assessed using electroretinography (ERG) for the off

Prenatal Alcohol Consumption Alters Protein Fingerprint in Umbilical Cord Blood Serum and Induces Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cell Dysfunction.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy is directly related to the establishment of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which includes craniofacial changes, body growth restriction, and neurodevelopment impairments. Proper functioning of the central nervous system (CNS) depends on blood-brain barrier (BBB) development, which is formed by interactions of vascular endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, and basal lamina. Gestational exposure to ethanol has been demonstrated to impair CNS development; however, little is known about ethanol modulation of blood circulating factor

Low to Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Facial Shape of Children at Age 6 to 8 Years.

IMPORTANCE: In addition to confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure and severe neurodevelopmental deficits, three cardinal facial features are included in the diagnostic criteria for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. It is not understood whether subtle facial characteristics occur in children without a diagnosis but who were exposed to a range of common pregnancy drinking patterns and, if so, whether these persist throughout childhood. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether subtle changes in facial shape with prenatal alcohol exposure found in 12-month-old children were evident at age 6 to 8 years using e

Cobalamin Status Among Patients with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)-A Preliminary Study.

Background/Objectives: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders comprise a range of neurodevelopmental disorders caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. Recent investigations have revealed that among patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, serum cobalamin (vitamin B12) levels are substantially higher than those of healthy controls. Patients with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders similarly present with higher levels of cobalamin, yet the significance of cobalamin in the pathogenesis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders remains to be established. This study aimed to examine cobalamin and other cobalamin
