Deltamethrin is among the pyrethroids most frequently detected in Egyptian irrigation canals and drains, the same water bodies that support Biomphalaria alexandrina, the snail that transmits Schistosoma mansoni in Egypt. The objective of this study was to characterize the response of adult B. alexandrina to sublethal concentrations of a commercial deltamethrin formulation, using hemocyte, biochemical, and histopathological biomarkers. The hypothesis tested was that sublethal deltamethrin reduces the number of circulating hemocytes, alters the balance between hemocyte classes and damages hemocy

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic options for patients with poor-prognosis invasive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remain lacking. Although novel treatment strategies have demonstrated improved efficacy, they are frequently associated with substantial financial costs. Consequently, rigorous economic evaluation is essential to inform clinical and policy decisions.
METHODS: A three-state Markov model with a lifetime horizon was developed using clinical efficacy data from the ASCENT-04/KEYNOTE-D19 trial, along with treatment-related cost inputs. Lifetime costs and health outcomes in cases of advance

Schistosomiasis remains an important but neglected public health problem in Uganda. We estimated its prevalence, microscopy-based species distribution and associated factors among women delivering at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. A hospital-based analytical cross-sectional study included 392 women from 1 September to 30 December 2025. One stool and one urine specimen per participant were examined microscopically for Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression assessed associated factors; parsimonious conventional and Firth penalized models were u

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization in Brazil has shifted the epidemiological landscape of parasitic diseases, such as schistosomiasis and malaria. Although typically considered a rural infection, Schistosoma mansoni transmission persists in urban settings where sanitation and water access remain uneven. This study investigates the persistence and dynamics of urban schistosomiasis across neighborhoods of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
METHODS: Between 2011 and 2024 cross-sectional surveys were conducted to identify neighborhoods with the highest prevalence in the major metropolitan area of Salvador, Bah

BACKGROUND: In many endemic regions, accurately diagnosing urogenital schistosomiasis remains challenging, particularly in cases of low-intensity infection and limited laboratory capacity. Exploring antigens that cross-react between related schistosome species provides a promising alternative to conventional diagnostic approaches. Schistosoma bovis-an animal parasite closely related to S. haematobium and sharing the same Bulinus snail hosts in overlapping habitats- is a strong candidate for such studies. This work therefore assessed whether the recombinant S. bovis 22.6 kDa antigen (rSb22.6 kD

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a life-threatening parasitic disease that affects nearly 250 million people worldwide, and over 780 million people are at risk of infection globally. Sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden, accounting for approximately 280,000 deaths annually. In Kenya, over 17.6 million people are at risk, and approximately 10 million are infected. Busia County, an endemic region, has a prevalence of 17.6%. In past MDAs, the County recorded a praziquantel coverage level of 64.11%, below the WHO-recommended threshold of over 75%. This study aimed to identify the determinants

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis is a common consequence of chronic liver injury and is driven largely by persistent activation of hepatic stellate cells and excessive extracellular matrix deposition. We previously identified Schistosoma japonicum-derived sja-miR-2a-3p as a parasite-derived microRNA with antifibrotic activity in schistosomiasis-associated liver fibrosis. Whether this cross-species regulatory molecule also modulates fibrogenesis beyond the context of schistosome infection remains unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated the effects of sja-miR-2a-3p in a carbon tetrachloride-ind

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, causing substantial morbidity and millions of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Although the WHO aims to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem in several countries by 2030, current epidemiological data on schistosomiasis in Zambia are insufficient to adequately characterize transmission patterns, identify priority intervention areas, and inform the planning and evaluation of control programmes.
METHODS: We assessed the prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis among

Schistosomiasis is major neglected tropical disease of humans that is caused by trematodes in the genus Schistosoma. Humans are infected during contact with water in which schistosomes are being shed from their intermediate hosts, freshwater snails. Snail control is effective at reducing transmission, but can be expensive and ecologically problematic. Therefore, there is substantial interest in understanding the genetic mechanisms behind variation in snail resistance to infection by schistosomes, with the goal of leveraging that information to reduce transmission at the snail stage. INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic neglected tropical disease that remains a major public health problem in many African countries. Accurate diagnosis is essential for control, surveillance and elimination efforts. Conventional parasitological methods have limited sensitivity, particularly in low-intensity infections commonly observed after treatment or in low-endemic settings. Circulating anodic antigen (CAA), released by live Schistosoma worms, is a highly sensitive and specific marker of active infection. The up-converting reporter particle lateral flow (UCP-LF) CAA test enables n

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health challenge. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective disease management and control, with host-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs) emerging as promising disease biomarkers. This systematic review surveys research conducted on miRNA responses in disease vectors and human hosts of VBDs. A systematic search of four databases and manual searching identified 93 qualifying articles. Numerous VBDs were described, with the most common focus on dengue (21%; n = 15) and Chagas disease (11%; n = 8). Twenty-eight in vivo human studies h

The ureter is an important conduit between the kidney and the bladder and is frequently imaged to rule out cancer in the upper genitourinary tract. However, while malignancy can occur, a spectrum of other pathologic ureteral findings can exist, and these can be divided into congenital, intrinsic, and extrinsic abnormalities that range from postoperative and neoplastic conditions to inflammatory disease. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the ureter, including the ureteral anatomy, ureteral imaging strategies, and various ureteral conditions and their associated imaging features.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in endemic settings. The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium has developed a new paediatric treatment, arpraziquantel, for preschool-aged children. Because the treatment is dosed according to body weight, dose determination by scales poses operational challenges in community-based mass treatment campaigns. This study assessed the performance of the Pediatric Advanced Weight Prediction in the Emergency Room Extra-Long Mid-Arm Circumference (PAWPER XL-MAC) tape for weight estimation during mass drug administration in Uganda and Côte

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of single versus mixed Schistosoma infections on the efficacy of PZQ treatment as well as on the dynamics of reinfection after treatment.
METHODS: We followed 388 randomly selected residents of a village co‑endemic for Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni, screening them for Schistosoma infection every three weeks across a nine‑week period. Kato-Katz stool examination was used to detect eggs of S. mansoni and urine filtration to detect eggs of S. haematobium. At every visit, those who were positive for schistosomiasis were treated with 40mg/kg praziquantel.

BACKGROUND: Measuring the periportal fibrosis pattern (PPF) in schistosomiasis mansoni (SM) is essential for diagnosing portal hypertension. The Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test can be used to quantify liver fibrosis, however, few studies have been done in SM. This study evaluated serum ELF value according to the PPF pattern established by the Niamey ultrasound classification (US) and history of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in patients with SM.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, bidirectional analytical study was carried out with patients from an endemic area and from a reference out
