BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common postoperative complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). Besides the significant threat to the patient's life, they represent a surgical, financial, and stressful burden to the healthcare systems. Duration of the procedure, bacterial load in urine, severity of obstruction, and presence of infected stone directly increase the incidence of UTI.
AIM: To identify the perioperative predictors of postoperative UTIs in patients undergoing PNL in Assiut University Urology Hospital, Assiut, Egypt.
METHODS: A prospective study w

Infective endocarditis (IE) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Advances in medical and surgical care have led to a growing population of adults with CHD who carry a substantially higher lifetime risk of IE than the general population. This increased susceptibility reflects the combined effects of abnormal intracardiac flow patterns, the frequent presence of prosthetic material or intracardiac devices, and repeated surgical and transcatheter interventions. The epidemiology, microbiology, clinical presentation, and management of IE i

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a prevalent, debilitating disease affecting ~1% of the population, with limited therapeutic options and poor long-term remission rates. HS arises from inflammation and destruction of apocrine-bearing hair follicles, suggesting a multifactorial pathology involving immune dysregulation and follicular dysfunction. Emerging treatment strategies largely center on immune suppression, with three FDA-approved therapies targeting inflammatory pathways. However, most patients fail to achieve durable remission. Genetic evidence increasingly implicates the hair follicle as

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious disease with a high mortality rate. Complications of IE are frequent and serious, most of them manifesting as various forms of ischemia. Its rare, but equally serious complications include development of mycotic pseudoaneurysms of peripheral arteries. Total incidence of these aneurysms in connection with IE is approximately 2%. Out of this number, the majority affect intracranial arteries, while the remaining lesions occur equally in visceral and limb locations. We present a case report of a rapidly progressing popliteal artery aneurysm wi

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances. Chronic low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance are key components of its pathophysiology.Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been associated with systemic inflammation and metabolic alterations and may potentially affectendocrine function. The aim of this study was to assess whether H. pylori infection is associated with changes in hormonal parameters, including increased severity of hyperandrogenism, in women with PC

A 70-year-old male with bicuspid aortic valve developed oxacillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia complicated by infective endocarditis, aortic root abscess, and embolic stroke. Initial management included aortic valve replacement with a bioprosthetic valve, aortic root reconstruction with bovine pericardial patch, and anterior mitral leaflet repair. Despite appropriate antimicrobial therapy, the patient developed recurrent symptoms three years later. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed severe aortic regurgitation and a large pseudoaneurysm resulting from dehiscence of the pre

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by impaired ciliary function, defective mucociliary clearance, recurrent respiratory infections, and progressive respiratory morbidity. Macrolides, particularly azithromycin, have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties and may therefore provide therapeutic benefit in PCD. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy and safety of macrolide therapy in patients with PCD.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Rev

Pott's puffy tumour (PPT) is a rare condition defined by subperiosteal abscess formation following osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Complications can be severe and involve intracranial progression. Here, we present a rare case of a PPT due to an Aggregatibacter aphrophilus infection of odontogenic origin in a young adult patient with a history of bilateral cheilognathopalatoschisis. Due to the unusual location of the abscess, the diagnosis was initially missed, leading to a delay of more than 1 month until adequate treatment. Odontogenic treatment was initiated as source control, external dra

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae are an increasing challenge in pediatric practice due to the combined effects of biofilm formation, multidrug resistance (MDR), and limited therapeutic options for children. Biofilm development promotes bacterial persistence by impairing antibiotic penetration, enabling metabolic adaptation, promoting persister-cell formation, facilitating horizontal gene transfer (HGT), and inducing stress-induced mutagenesis, thereby reducing the effectiveness of conventional antimicrobial therapy. These mechanisms are further compounded by pedi

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk for recurrent and severe respiratory infections. Pneumococcal IgG measurements are used in clinical practice to evaluate humoral immunity, yet their clinical relevance in DS remains unclear. We examined potential associations between pneumococcal IgG concentrations and clinical characteristics in children with DS, including recurrent infections and respiratory hospital admission. We conducted a retrospective study in a paediatric DS cohort with repeated pneumococcal IgG measurements obtained from left-over plasma samples using ELISA and mu

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a chronic blistering skin disease with a propensity for bacterial colonization, critical colonization and/or infection, namely with Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. While P. aeruginosa cutaneous and systemic infection are associated with significant morbidity in the EB population, critical colonization poses its own risks, given its impairment of wound healing and the hypothesized association of flagellated bacteria with wound-induced skin cancer. There is a paucity of published literature describing topical management of P. aeruginosa colonizatio

INTRODUCTION: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare disorder of impaired respiratory mucociliary clearance and chronic pulmonary infections. The clinical impact of chronic infection is poorly understood. The objective of this single-center, retrospective cohort study was to assess clinical outcomes of people with PCD and chronic airway infection. We hypothesized that chronic airway infection would be associated with greater declines in lung function and higher pulmonary exacerbation rates.
METHODS: Linear mixed effects models were used to analyze the association of chronic infection with

UNLABELLED: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare inherited disorder of motile ciliary dysfunction characterized by impaired mucociliary clearance, chronic sino-pulmonary disease, and progressive bronchiectasis. Pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) are a major contributor to morbidity, lung function decline, and healthcare utilization in PCD, yet historically have been poorly defined and understudied. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical impact, and management of PEx in PCD, with emphasis on recent advances that are beginning t
