Early First-Trimester Diagnosis of Thoracopagus Conjoined Twins with a Shared Cardiac Structure.

Thoracopagus conjoined twins are the most common type of conjoined twinning and are frequently associated with shared cardiac anatomy, the principal determinant of prognosis and postnatal survival. Early prenatal diagnosis is essential for accurate counseling and timely pregnancy management. We report the diagnosis of thoracopagus conjoined twins with a shared cardiac structure in a 35-year-old primigravid woman at 8 weeks and 3 days of gestation. High-resolution transvaginal ultrasound demonstrated persistent thoracic fusion, fixed relative fetal position, a single yolk sac, a single umbilica

Conjoined Parasitic Twins (Cephalo-Thoracopagus Parasiticus) in a Free Ranging Northern Bat (Eptesicus nilssonii): A Micro-CT Anatomic and Genetic Survey.

The detailed anatomical situation of male stillborn cephalo-thoracopagus twins in a wild ranging northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii) is described by means of full body micro-CT scans in high resolution with three-dimensional computational reconstruction. The external anatomy was characterised by supernumerary wings and legs and marked cranial disfiguration. The most striking features of the internal anatomy were the presence of two hearts with different characteristics, three lungs with two tracheas, three kidneys as well as a doubled liver. Vascular aberrations and other organ deformities are

Circumferential venous sinus: an innovative separation method for total vertical type II craniopagus twins.

Craniopagus twins, particularly the total vertical type II variant, represent one of the rarest and most complex congenital malformations, with significant surgical challenges. This technical note presents the successful staged separation of craniopagus twins at 3 years 9 months of age, the oldest known to be separated to date. The twins shared a prominent circumferential venous sinus, requiring a novel surgical strategy. Advanced imaging, 3D modeling, and virtual reality planning in the metaverse-between Brazil and the United Kingdom-guided the 7 staged surgeries. Initially, partial separatio

Prenatal diagnosis and management of omphalopagus conjoined twins with shared cloacal exstrophy: A rare case report.

OBJECTIVE: Omphalopagus conjoined twins with shared cloacal exstrophy is a rare and easily missed diagnosis in early pregnancy. We emphasize the importance of early prenatal diagnosis and management to prevent complications. CASE REPORT: This is a 32-year-old gravida-3, para-0 woman referred at 19th week of gestation age for conjoined twins diagnosed as omphalopagus. Initial evaluations misidentified the condition due to the presence of a large cyst, initially thought to be simple amniotic fluid. Advanced magnetic resonance imaging confirmed shared bowel structures and a significantly dilated

Effectiveness of closed incisional negative pressure wound therapy in pediatric spinal dysraphism: a single-center retrospective case series.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative wound complications - including surgical site infection (SSI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, and wound dehiscence - remain a significant challenge following surgery for spinal dysraphism, particularly in neonates and infants. Closed incisional negative pressure wound therapy (ciNPWT) has demonstrated benefit in several surgical subspecialties; however, evidence regarding its routine use in pediatric spinal dysraphism surgery is limited. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all pediatric patients (age < 18 years) who underwent surgery for spinal dys

Perinatal Management and Appropriate Time of Delivery in Monochorionic Monoamniotic Twins When One Twin has Transposition of the Great Arteries. A Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Monochorionic monoamniotic (MCMA) twin pregnancies are typically delivered at 32–34 weeks of gestation to reduce the risk of intrauterine demise, but this practice may compromise outcomes for a growth-restricted or very–low-birth-weight twin requiring complex cardiac surgery. We conducted a literature review in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE and PubMed from inception to October 26, 2025. We included reports of MCMA twin pregnancies with one fetus with TGA describing perinatal outcomes, cord complications, and cardiac surgery in very–low-birth-weight neonates. Of 388 rec

Successful Separation of Female Omphalopagus Conjoined Twins at the Mother and Child University Hospital Center in N'Djamena, Chad: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Conjoined twin pregnancies are rare, and the twins can be connected via shared organs or anatomical structures. Omphalopagus conjoined twins represent 10% of cases and are connected at the abdominal wall, typically between the xiphoid process and the umbilicus. They can share the liver, biliary tract, and upper gastrointestinal system. This report describes the successful separation of female omphalopagus conjoined twins at a specialist center in N'Djamena, Chad. CASE REPORT One-day-old female omphalopagus conjoined twins were admitted to the Mother and Child University Hospital in

Partial craniofacial duplication in a resource-limited setting: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Diprosopus, or craniofacial duplication, is an extremely rare congenital malformation, representing only 0.4% of conjoined twins with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 15 million births. Fewer than 40 cases have been reported worldwide. We describe a case of partial craniofacial duplication in a child from rural Ethiopia, highlighting the challenges of delayed diagnosis and management in a resource-limited setting. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old girl presented with a congenital mandibular mass that had remained untreated since birth due to a lack of antenatal care

Twin hearts, one challenge: safe anesthetic care for thoraco-ischiopagus conjoined twins requiring emergency colostomy in resource-limited setting.

INTRODUCTION: Conjoined twinning represents a rare and complex congenital anomaly arising from incomplete embryonic division after the 13th day of fertilization. The condition occurs in approximately 1 in 50,000–200,000 live births, most commonly among females. Successful perioperative management requires multidisciplinary planning and precise anesthetic coordination to address unique physiological challenges, including potential cross-circulation and shared organ systems. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the anesthetic management of six-hour-old male conjoined twins joined from the mid-chest to t

Conjoined ischiopagus twins after single euploid embryo transfer: A case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of an exceedingly rare form of conjoined twinning in a 37-year-old patient who underwent a single euploid embryo transfer for severe male factor infertility. The male partner presented with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens, absence of the right seminal vesicle, and right renal agenesis. The sperm used to create the couple's embryos were obtained by TESE and cryopreserved with subsequent thawing. The patient had an unremarkable IVF and medicated frozen embryo transfer cycle. The serum βHCG trend was unremarkable, and pregnancy ultrasound revealed a single fetal

The maternal-fetal anesthetic considerations of ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure: Experience from a tertiary referral center and literature review.

The ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure is a specialized surgical technique designed to safely establish cardiopulmonary support by maintaining placental circulation during cesarean delivery. It is most commonly indicated for fetuses with compromised airways caused by cervical masses, congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS), or tracheal occlusion. Additional indications include resection of thoracic abnormalities, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulation, management of conjoined twins, and resuscitation of extremely low birth-weight neonates. Dicephalus Tetrabrachius Parapagus Conjoined Twins: A Case Report from Orotta National Maternity Referral Hospital, Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Conjoined twins (CT) are exceptionally rare congenital anomalies, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 50,000 to 200,000 births, and they pose substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. When the condition is not identified before labour, the rigid fetal mass may result in absolute mechanical obstruction, frequently leading to severe maternal complications, including uterine rupture. This risk is particularly pronounced in low-resource settings, where delayed presentation and limited access to timely surgical intervention further increase the likelihood of adverse maternal ou

A Child with Three Legs or Conjoint Parasitic Twin?

AIM: Rachiphagus is a rare congenital anomaly in which conjoined twins are fused at the midline of the vertebral column region. When one twin is malformed, the condition is referred to as a parasitic twin. The term "parasitic twin" also encompasses cases involving extra limbs or limb-like structures. Despite ongoing research, the underlying causes of this condition remain unknown. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a systematic review of the literature with a case report. A literature search was done in English language in PubMed and Semantic-Scholar from 1952 to 2023. All articles and cases with

BACKGROUND: Maudsley Family Therapy (MFT), and its manualised version, Family-Based Therapy (FBT), are the only well-established treatment interventions for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), with treatment efficacy primarily measured by improvements in eating behaviours and weight restoration. A crucial component of this therapy is an intensive home-based refeeding intervention that requires a substantial commitment from parents for up to one year. While this treatment works to restore weight in a proportion of adolescents, very little is known about its impacts on family distress, relationshi
