The Common quail Coturnixcoturnix Linnaeus, 1758 is a wild migratory bird which is distributed in Eurasia and North Africa, everywhere with an accelerating decline in population size. This species is protected by the Bonn and Berne conventions (1979) and by annex II/1 of the Birds Directive (2009). In Algeria, its breeding took place at the hunting centre in the west of the country. Breeding errors caused uncontrolled crosses between the Common quail and Japanese quail Coturnixjaponica Temminck & Schlegel, 1849. In order to help to preserve the natural genetic heritage of the Common quail and

Spindly recruits a fraction of cytoplasmic dynein to kinetochores for poleward movement of chromosomes and control of mitotic checkpoint signaling. Here we show that human Spindly is a cell cycle-regulated mitotic phosphoprotein that interacts with the Rod/ZW10/Zwilch (RZZ) complex. The kinetochore levels of Spindly are regulated by microtubule attachment and biorientation induced tension. Deletion mutants lacking the N-terminal half of the protein (NDelta253), or the conserved Spindly box (DeltaSB), strongly localized to kinetochores and failed to respond to attachment or tension. In addition

Condensin complexes are thought to play essential roles in mitotic chromosome assembly and segregation in eukaryotes. To date, two condensin complexes (condensin I and II) have been identified. Both complexes contain two structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) subunits and three non-SMC subunits. In plants, little is known about the localization and function of all the condensin subunits. Here, we report the analyses on the localization of a non-SMC subunit of Arabidopsis condensin I and II, AtCAP-H, and AtCAP-H2, respectively. Our study indicated that localization of AtCAP-H and AtCAP-H2 i

In Drosophila oocytes, euchromatic homolog-homolog associations are released at the end of pachytene, while heterochromatic pairings persist until metaphase I. A screen of 123 autosomal deficiencies for dominant effects on achiasmate chromosome segregation has identified a single gene that is haplo-insufficient for homologous achiasmate segregation and whose product may be required for the maintenance of such heterochromatic pairings. Of the deficiencies tested, only one exhibited a strong dominant effect on achiasmate segregation, inducing both X and fourth chromosome nondisjunction in FM7/X

OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence of congenital aural atresia in patients with a deletion of the long arm of chromosome 18 (18q- deletion or de Grouchy syndrome).
STUDY DESIGN AND PATIENTS: This retrospective study presents an overview of the otologic findings in 33 Dutch and Belgian patients with a deletion of 18q.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Detailed information on otorhinolaryngological findings was obtained from otorhinolaryngologists and audiologic centers. Data about medical and developmental history and phenotype were collected from physical examination by a clinical geneticist, by interv

A feedback control mechanism, or cell cycle checkpoint, delays the onset of anaphase until all the chromosomes are correctly aligned on the mitotic spindle. Previously, we showed that the murine homologue of Bub1 is not only required for checkpoint response to spindle damage, but also restrains progression through a normal mitosis (Taylor, S.S., and F. McKeon. 1997. Cell. 89:727-735). Here, we describe the identification of a human homologue of Bub3, a 37-kD protein with four WD repeats. Like Bub1, Bub3 localizes to kinetochores before chromosome alignment. In addition, Bub3 and Bub1 interact

Genes within the differential region of the human Y chromosome do not recombine, and therefore the determination of their location depends on physical mapping. Yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contigs spanning the euchromatic region of the human Y have become a powerful tool for the generation of an overlapping clone map. With this approach, however, complete physical mapping is difficult in Y euchromatic regions that are rich in repetitive sequences. We have, therefore, made use of the fluorescence in situ hybridization technique as an alternative strategy for physically mapping the PRKY and

The authors have studied a series of 23 DiGeorge syndrome patients by prometaphase chromosome analysis and/or by FISH with a set of 6 cosmid probes spanning the previously described commonly deleted region. Four patients display a cytogenetically visible interstitial deletion in band 22q11.2, whereas the other 18 patients exhibit a molecular deletion evidenced only by FISH analysis. For 21 of the patients studied, the deletion encompasses the 6 loci tested, while for one, only the most telomeric of these loci is conserved. The last patient does not show any deletion with the probes used.

Nonclaret disjunctional (ncd) is a kinesin-related microtubule motor protein required for meiotic and early mitotic chromosome distribution in Drosophila. ncd translocates on microtubules with the opposite polarity to kinesin, toward microtubule minus ends, and is associated with spindles in chromosome/spindle preparations. Here we report a new mutant of ncd caused by partial deletion of the predicted coiled-coil central stalk. The mutant protein exhibits a velocity of translocation and ability to generate torque in motility assays comparable to near full-length ncd, but only partially rescues

Down syndrome (DS) is a major cause of mental retardation and heart disease. Although it is usually caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21, a subset of the diagnostic features may be caused by the presence of only band 21q22. We now present evidence that significantly narrows the chromosomal region responsible for several of the phenotypic features of DS. We report a molecular and cytogenetic analysis of a three-generation family containing four individuals with clinical DS as manifested by the characteristic facial appearance, endocardial cushion defect, mental retardation, and prob

G-banded and C-banded prometaphase and metaphase karyotypes of the Chinese hamster Don cell line from three different laboratories were compared. All the cell lines were pseudodiploid. Each consisted of two distinct cell populations designated S1 and S2. The chromosome complements of each of these populations differed from the diploid by only one additional chromosome band on a subterminal 1p in S1 and on a median 1q in S2. The sites of these extra bands were neither constricted nor heterochromatic. All other different karyotypes, including those from seven distinct subpopulations, had basic p

Retinoblastoma occurs with increased frequency in children born with a deletion of the long arm of chromosome 13. Recent reviews have noted that the region 13q14 is consistently deleted in documented cases. Prometaphase and late prophase banding allowed Yunis and Ramsay to determine that a deletion in one patient included the sub-bands q14 . 12, q14 . 13, and q14 . 2, and a portion of q14 . 11 and q14 . 3. We report the results of similar cytogenetic techniques applied in the case of a 26 month old Caucasian female with unilateral retinoblastoma, moderate developmental delay, and subtle dysmor

Seven complete chromosomes and nine telocentric chromosomes in telotrisomics of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were identified and designated by an improved Giemsa N-banding technique. Karyotype analysis and Giemsa N-banding patterns of complete and telocentric chromosomes at somatic late prophase, prometaphase and metaphase have shown the following results: Chromosome 1 is a median chromosome with a long arm (Telo 1L) carrying a centromeric band, while short arm (Telo 1S) has a centromeric band and two intercalary bands. Chromosome 2 is the longest in the barley chromosome complement. Both arms

High-resolution replication banding was performed to (1) delineate at the prometaphase level small interstitial deletions of chromosome 13 in two unrelated patients with retinoblastoma (Rb) and (2) study the influence of these deletions in the replication autonomy of the regions involved. The present study indicates that, in spite of the fact that break points separate (split) bands q14 and q21 in different segments, these deletions do not produce a position effect or alteration in the replication behavior of the abnormal chromosome 13's. Each segment in the deleted chromosomes replicates with
