Gastrointestinal parasite (GIP) infections significantly limit livestock productivity in tropical smallholder systems, yet comparative epidemiological data between cattle and buffalo remain scarce. This study examined co-infection dynamics, parasite patterns, and risk factors in cattle and buffalo in Thailand. A cross-sectional study of 302 animals (30 farms) used fecal examinations to detect nematodes, rumen flukes, and Fasciola spp. Risk factors were assessed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Animal-level GIP prevalence was 69.54% (buffalo 78.07%; cattle 64.36%), with

The liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica cause fasciolosis, a zoonotic disease of major health and livestock importance. To evade host immunity, these parasites secrete immunomodulatory molecules, including fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs), which are essential for parasite survival by mediating fatty acid uptake and transport, and by exerting anti-inflammatory effects that promote immune evasion and chronic infection. This study investigates the roles of F. hepatica FABPs' in nutrient acquisition, immune modulation, and parasite survival, assessing their potential as vaccin

Saposin-like protein 2 (SAP2) exhibits strong immunogenicity as an antigen for immunodiagnosis in ruminant and human fasciolosis. Most available immunodiagnostic test kits are based on polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against antigens from Fasciola spp. Previous studies demonstrated that polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against SAP2 showed high specificity and could effectively detect Fasciola spp. infections at an early stage. However, polyclonal antibodies are extremely difficult to produce, and quality control is not possible during production; the procedure also involves considerab

Fasciolosis remains a major constraint to ruminant production in Ethiopia, particularly in wetland-based grazing systems where infective Fasciola metacercariae encyst on pasture vegetation. This study investigated metacercarial contamination of wetland herbage and its association with forage characteristics across lowland, midland and highland agro-ecologies of the Gamo Zone, southern Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to October 2022, during which 432 herbage samples were collected for parasitological and botanical analysis, and 171 livestock owners were interv

Fascioliasis is a foodborne trematode infection caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. It is caused by ingestion of undercooked aquatic vegetation containing infective stage metacercariae. Symptoms in the acute stage include fever, abdominal pain and eosinophilia and in the chronic stage symptoms of biliary obstruction or cholangitis. Very few fascioliasis cases have been reported from India. In the last 1 year, we diagnosed six cases of fascioliasis who presented with acute stage symptoms. They were diagnosed by characteristic dietary history, liver abscess on imaging and eggs of

We report an imported case of co-infection with fascioliasis and schistosomiasis in a 37-year-old patient with no known medical history, originally from Djibouti, a country in sub-Saharan East Africa. The diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of Schistosoma ova, suggestive clinical symptoms, positive serologies to both fascioliasis and schistosomiasis, and the atypical appearance of hepatic lesions on MRI. The patient was in France as a tourist. He was treated with a dual therapy of triclabendazole and praziquantel. His clinical condition improved without treatment-related side effects. Thi

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease in regard to public health, which is sporadically reported from different parts of the world. Adult worms infect the liver and bile ducts, but extrahepatic involvement and the development of parasitic myositis and muscle mass caused by Fasciola hepatica are uncommon and very rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old Iranian female presented with a history of abdominal pain, epigastric tenderness without pallor and jaundice, along with significant weight loss for the past five months. Microscopic examination of the stool did not identify adult worms

Fascioliasis is an environmentally mediated zoonotic disease sustained by nonlinear interactions among humans, livestock, freshwater snails, and contaminated aquatic environments. In endemic agricultural settings, transmission is influenced by heterogeneous contact structures arising from clustered village interactions, shared water sources, and livestock movement. A deterministic multihost transmission framework is formulated in which connectivity effects are incorporated through effective transmission coefficients derived from a mean-field approximation of contact structure. The model integr

Fasciolosis, caused by the liver fluke Fasciola gigantica, remains a major parasitic disease affecting livestock in tropical regions and results in substantial economic losses. Although anthelmintic drugs are widely used for disease control, increasing reports of drug resistance highlight the need for alternative strategies such as vaccination. In this study, a recombinant digestive protein-based chimeric antigen (rFgCHI-DP) composed of three F. gigantica antigens-cathepsin L1 (FgCL1), cathepsin B1 (FgCB1), and saposin-like protein 2 (FgSAP2)-was designed and expressed in Escherichia coli. We present the case of a 9-year-old girl from the Peruvian Andean Region (Ancash), diagnosed with fascioliasis, who was also suffering from severe malnutrition. Initially, she was referred for treatment of skin necrosis caused by cutaneous visceral loxoscelism, but during hospitalisation she developed persistent vomiting and pancreatitis. Magnetic resonance cholangiography showed dilation of the intrahepatic and common bile ducts. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography identified an adult Fasciola spp. specimen. She also expelled adult worms of Ascaris lumbricoides during vomiting. Del

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, elicits a complex host immune response characterized by the formation of a fibrotic capsule known as the adventitial layer. While the cellular composition of this layer has been previously studied, the spatial distribution of T lymphocytes remains poorly defined, particularly in relation to cyst fertility, host species, organ localization, and co-infection with Fasciola hepatica. In this study, we evaluated the distribution of CD3⁺ T cells in the adventitial layer of hepatic and pulmonary CE cysts col

Egg morphometry provides valuable information for investigating phenotypic variation and host-associated patterns in Fasciola hepatica. However, comparative studies evaluating egg morphometric variation across multiple definitive host species remain limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate morphometric variation in F. hepatica eggs recovered from different definitive host species using univariate, multivariate, and host-level classification approaches. A total of 690 eggs obtained from 60 independent host individuals representing cattle, sheep, goats, horses, mules, donkeys, a

Fasciolosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, which is distributed worldwide, causes significant losses to livestock farming. The development of a rapid detection method will aid in disease prevention and control. Although there are many studies on rapid diagnostics, most are based on natural antigens. A colloidal gold detection method based on recombinant antigens for diagnosing F. gigantica infection is lacking. Given the potential of mixed recombinant antigens for enhanced diagnostic efficacy, a colloidal gold method based on re

The digenean trematodes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica are the major causative agents of human and animal fasciolosis worldwide. Control of fasciolosis relies mainly on chemotherapeutic drugs, particularly triclabendazole (TCBZ). However, the emergence of drug resistant flukes necessitates the need for alternative control strategies. Plant derived compounds and their nanoparticle formulations have recently attracted attention as potential anthelminthic agents due to their bioactivity, biocompatibility and lower risk of development of resistance. The present study evaluated the in vitro ant

BACKGROUND: Fasciola gigantica (F. gigantica) is a widespread zoonotic trematode that poses a substantial burden on livestock and public health in endemic regions. Elucidating host-parasite interactions relies largely on proteomic data. Excretory-Secretory proteins (ESPs) can play central roles in the host-parasite interactions, immune evasion, and parasite pathogenicity; however, proteomic information on F. gigantica infecting buffalo remains scarce, particularly from Pakistan.
OBJECTIVES: In this study, we present the first comprehensive proteomic characterization of adult F. gigantica reco

Although oxfendazole (OFZ) has been traditionally used to control nematode parasites in domestic animals and more recently in human medicine, high efficacy against porcine cysticercosis and fasciolosis in both sheep and pigs has been observed when the drug is administered at higher dose levels. In this context, the plasma disposition kinetics and the pattern of drug accumulation in adult Fasciola hepatica was characterized in infected sheep orally treated with OFZ at either the nematodicidal dose of 5 mg/kg (OFZ5) or at a higher dose of 30 mg/kg (OFZ30). OFZ was the main analyte detected in pl
