Timing of Fasciola hepatica infection selectively impairs antibody avidity after foot-and-mouth disease vaccination in cattle.

INTRODUCTION: Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite of ruminants that induces potent immunoregulatory responses, potentially compromising vaccine-induced immunity. This study evaluated the effect of F. hepatica infection and its timing on immune responses elicited by foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) vaccination in cattle. METHODS: Fifty-two one-year-old calves free of maternal FMDV antibodies were allocated to five experimental groups (10-11 animals/group). Animals were experimentally infected with F. hepatica either before or after FMDV vaccination and compared with antiparasitic-trea

Human infestations with Fasciola hepatica in Austria between 1955 and 2025: data from a low-incidence country.

Although rare, human Fasciola hepatica (FH) infestations represent a clinically relevant parasitosis that can cause significant clinical manifestations and functional limitations, particularly affecting the liver. Laboratory tests typically reveal elevated white blood cell counts and absolute or relative eosinophilia. The Department of Medical Parasitology at the Institute for Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine, Center of Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology, Medical University of Vienna, is the national reference center for FH infestations in Austria. In this study, we assesse

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Bovine Fasciolosis in Injibara Town, North Western Ethiopia.

Fasciolosis is a snail-borne parasitic disease caused by genus Fasciola liver flukes that leads to high morbidity and moderate to high mortality in cattle. A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to may 2026 to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of bovine fasciolosis in Injibara town. A total of 384 cattle faecal samples were collected using simple random sampling techniques and subjected to the faecal sedimentation technique. The overall prevalence of fasciolosis was 122 (31.8%) [95%, CI=27.3-36.6]. Statistically significant variation (P < 0.05) was observed in t

Fascioliasis and anisakidosis highlight the need for integrated One Health approaches to food safety and security.

Food-borne parasitic diseases pose an escalating challenge to global food security, public health, and sustainable food systems, particularly in the context of climate change, environmental disturbance, globalised food trade, and shifting dietary practices. Within a One Health framework, fascioliasis and anisakidosis represent two globally distributed and increasingly important helminth zoonoses that span terrestrial and aquatic food systems, affecting livestock, fisheries, and human populations. Fascioliasis, caused by Fasciola spp., remains a major constraint on livestock productivity and a

From synthetic design to biological evaluation: Small-molecules as strategies against zoonotic neglected tropical diseases.

Zoonotic neglected tropical diseases (zNTDs) constitute a major global health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where close interactions between humans, animals, and environmental reservoirs sustain pathogen transmission. Collectively, these diseases affect millions of people worldwide and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, yet they continue to receive comparatively limited attention in drug discovery. Therapeutic options are still limited and are often associated with high toxicity, prolonged treatment regimens, variable efficacy, and the emerg

Prognostic Impact of Liver Metastases on [177Lu]Lu-PSMA Therapy Outcomes in Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate brushing of oral mucosa is important for accurate human papillomavirus (HPV) detection in potentially malignant (oral leukoplakia [OL], oral lichen planus [OLP]) and malignant (oral squamous cell carcinoma [OSCC]) lesions. Since various factors may limit the adequacy of oral brushing and, consequently, the accuracy of HPV detection, modified sampling procedures should be evaluated for their effect on HPV frequency and/or types detected. AIM: To compare the HPV frequency in samples obtained by brushing the lesion site with the frequency in samples obtained by brushing an

Hampi Tariki Kit: thin-layer chromatography for semiquantitative screening of solid oral medicines in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Essential precondition for the development of cervical cancer is a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The majority - approximately 70% - of cervical carcinomas is caused by two high-risk HPV types (16 and 18). Recently, two vaccines have been approved to the German market with the potential to induce protection against HPV 16 and HPV 18 among additional low-risk virus types. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether HPV vaccination is effective with regard to the reduction of cervical cancer and precursors of cervical carcinoma (CIN), respectively? Does HPV vaccination repres

Estimation of the global burden of tungiasis in endemic countries using a disability adjusted life-years modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical zoonotic skin disease which is endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, caused by sand fleas of the genus Tunga, which burrow into the skin of affected humans and animals, most commonly when the feet come in contact with infested soil. Sand flea infection leads to inflammation, severe itching, and pain, with the potential for secondary bacterial or viral infections, gangrene, and disfigurement. Tungiasis disproportionately affects poor rural communities, and individuals living in unhygienic settlements. To date, the existing burden of tungi

Exposed yet unmapped: evidence of differential flood exposure in deprived urban areas using citizen science.

BACKGROUND: Due to their immature immune system, neonates are at high risk of infection. This vulnerability when combined with limited resources and health education in developing countries can lead to sepsis, resulting in high global neonatal mortality rates. Many of these deaths are preventable. The BabyGel pilot trial tested the feasibility of conducting the main randomised trial, with the provision of alcohol handgel to postpartum mothers for prevention of neonatal infective morbidity in the rural community. This secondary analysis sought to evaluate the methods of detecting infections in

Mechanical‑immune feedback regulation in distraction osteogenesis: From mechanotransduction to immune microenvironment remodeling (Review).

BACKGROUND: Prostatic male genital schistosomiasis and prostate cancer co-existence cases are uncommon however, some studies have indicated that schistosomiasis may trigger development of prostate cancer regardless of age. Schistosomiasis is a public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa and may account for some undocumented cases of schistosomiasis prostatic cancer in schistosome endemic rural communities. It is against this background that we investigated the association between schistosomiasis and risk of prostate cancer development in residents of Murehwa Community, a schistosomiasis endemi

Concurrent evaluation of oxidative stress biomarkers, cytokine expression, molecular identification, and histopathological findings in sheep naturally infected with Fasciola hepatica.

Ovine fascioliasis, caused by Fasciola species, challenges livestock productivity worldwide and remains insufficiently characterized at the molecular and immunological levels in endemic regions, such as Egypt. In 150 slaughtered sheep, the prevalence was determined, mitochondrial COX1 was sequenced for species identity, hepatic cytokine transcripts were quantified via qRT-PCR, oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA, TAC, TOS, and OSI) were assayed, and histopathology was evaluated. The prevalence was 15.3 %, with non-significant sex/season effects. COX1 phylogenetics confirmed that Fasciola hepatica

Parabens and estrogen-mediated cancers: unraveling coincidence, co-occurrence, and causality.

Trabeculectomy remains the 'gold standard' intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering procedure for moderate-to-severe glaucoma; however, this approach is associated with the need for substantial post-operative management. Micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures aim to reduce the need for intra- and post-operative management and provide a less invasive means of lowering IOP. Generally, MIGS procedures are associated with only modest reductions in IOP and are targeted at patients with mild-to-moderate glaucoma, highlighting an unmet need for a less invasive treatment of advanced and refracto

Case Report: A concomitant case of eosinophilic granuloma of the spine and Fasciola hepatica infection of the liver in a young patient, and review of the literature.

Eosinophilic granuloma (EG) is a benign osteolytic bone lesion and is a localized form of Langerhans cell histiocytosis, most commonly involving the skeletal system. EG is a rare tumor, and involvement of the spine is low. Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease caused by Fasciola species. The concomitant occurrence of EG and Fasciola hepatica infection is very rare. We report the clinical case of a young man (22 years old) who presented with acute pain in the dorsum. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a T9 vertebra lesion that was hypointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted

Lyell´s syndrome associated with the use of topical agents: case report.

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Fasciola hepatica in alpine dairy farming: prevalence trends, risk factors and associations with Salmonella Dublin seropositivity.

Fasciola hepatica impairs animal health and productivity in ruminants and has been associated with Salmonella Dublin infection, a zoonotic pathogen in cattle that causes diarrhea, abortions, and pneumonia. This work reassessed F. hepatica seroprevalence in Tyrolean dairy herds and investigated associations with alpine pasturing, the breed, S. Dublin occurrence and milk performance. In late autumn/early winter 2023, bulk tank milk samples from 3645 farms were tested using a commercial ELISA test (IDEXX Fasciolosis Verification Test, Montpellier, France). Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. Expert knowledge elicitation to determine the relative importance of potentially foodborne parasitic diseases in Armenia.

Reliable prioritization of foodborne parasitic diseases is challenging in settings where routine surveillance and attribution data are limited. For example, In Armenia, the relative importance of different foodborne parasitoses has not previously been assessed. This study applied expert knowledge elicitation (EKE) to identify and rank foodborne parasitic diseases of public health relevance and to support national prioritization efforts. A structured questionnaire was administered to experts from human health, veterinary medicine, food safety, and biological sciences. Participants evaluated sel
