Differentiable ray tracing optimization of freeform spectacle lenses for astigmatism correction.

Refractive error is a global public health challenge, with astigmatism correction being one of the key issues. While spherocylindrical lenses compensate for static astigmatism, they fail to address optical axis shifts during eye movement. To address this problem, we propose a single vision lens design method with freeform surfaces based on differentiable ray tracing. Our method integrates the rotation model of the human eye into the optical design framework. Besides, it leverages the high design freedom of the freeform surface to realize effective correction of optical focus errors across diff

Space-time odd-symmetric Butterfly wave packets with multidimensional modulation properties.

Achieving multidimensional modulation and analysis of breathers in a local nonlinear medium is a highly significant research area. We present what we believe is the first investigation of space-time odd-symmetric Butterfly (STOSB) wave packets in a local nonlinear medium, focusing on their odd-symmetric focus and focal length control. Meanwhile, a completely new modulation method for breathers is proposed that can alter the intensity distribution of breathers in the X-Y plane while leaving the intensity distribution in the X-T and Y-T planes unchanged. Furthermore, both the unique self-healing

Multifunctional Collagen-Like Protein as a Gene Therapy Vehicle for Biomedical Applications.

Gene therapy, utilizing a protein-based delivery system, offers a promising alternative to viral vectors owing to their stability, cell specificity, and adaptability. This study investigates the potential of collagen, a key extracellular matrix (ECM) component, as a gene delivery vehicle. While natural collagens play a crucial role in tissue regeneration, their high molecular weight limit efficient cellular uptake. To overcome this, we engineered a collagen-like protein (CLP) containing G-X-Y repeats mimicking type I collagen and retaining its functional properties. Furthermore, mussel adhesiv

Drivers of systemic male-female allele frequency divergence in humans.

Allele frequency differences between males and females in genetic studies have been interpreted as suggestive of sex differences in natural selection. However, systemic differences may also arise through sex differences in study participation as well as bioinformatic artifacts. To mitigate these confounding effects, we performed a meta-analysis of sex differences in allele frequencies across three genetic studies. We identify twelve concordant genes with cross-study evidence of sex differences in allele frequency. We propose four hypotheses for how and when sex differences in allele frequencie

Carbon vacancy network mediated hydrogen trapping at the α-Fe/VC interface.

Hydrogen embrittlement poses a significant threat to the structural integrity of high-strength steels. Although vanadium carbide (VC) precipitates are recognized as effective traps for mitigating hydrogen-induced damage, the precise mechanisms of hydrogen trapping and diffusion within VC remain controversial. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the influence of carbon vacancies on hydrogen trapping and diffusion behavior at the coherent α-Fe/VC interface. Our results reveal that interfacial carbon vacancies facilitate hydrogen approach along the xy-plane, whil

Hundred-Nanosecond Equivalent Pixel Dwell Time for Deep-Tissue 3D Three-Photon Fluorescence Microscopy via Sparse X-Y-Z Reconstruction.

Three-photon fluorescence microscopy (3PFM) enables high-resolution volumetric imaging in deep tissues but is fundamentally constrained by a trade-off among imaging speed and spatial resolution, due to low photon flux and prolonged laser exposure. We present DeepR-SXYZ, a deep learning framework that achieves pixel dwell time equivalent to hundreds of nanoseconds (0.168-0.38 µs) through sparse X-Y-Z reconstruction for 3PFM. Trained on paired datasets consisting of sparsely acquired low-resolution volumetric scans (e.g., 256 × 256 pixels, 1.2 µs per pixel, Z step: 16 µm) and their corresponding

Ohmic-Polarization transition in hydrated DNA.

A quasi-two-dimensional DNA-water system was investigated under a perpendicular magnetic field of 0.5T and a constant 0.1V bias at near-room temperature. Upon cooling, the system undergoes a sharp crossover near 20 °C from a regime with finite longitudinal conduction to a regime in which the longitudinal current Ixx collapses, while the transverse voltage Vxy and a correlated photovoltage remain finite and develop slow, coherent modulations. This decoupling of longitudinal and transverse responses cannot be explained by conventional charge transport and instead indicates a transition from ohmi

Phase Diagram and Compositional Studies of Sc2-x-yFexAlyW3O12: Discovery of New Zero and Low Thermal Expansion Materials.

This work reports on the discovery of new materials in the Sc2-x-yFexAlyW3O12 family. Members with compositions containing high concentrations of Fe are found to crystallize to a structure in the monoclinic P21/a symmetry, while compositions with low values of Fe and Al crystallize in the orthorhombic Pnca structure at room temperature. The orthorhombic samples in the compositional range x = 0.5, y ≤ 0.5 are found to transition to the monoclinic P21/a structure at 210-230 K. Specifically, Sc1.25Fe0.5Al0.25W3O12 is found to exhibit a volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of -0.48(7)

Seven new karyotypes for subfamily Cercosaurinae (Squamata, Gymnophthalmidae) with a synthesis of chromosomal data.

Gymnophthalmidae is a monophyletic family of currently 297 Neotropical lizard species. Over the past 25 years, molecular studies have redefined previous morphology-based classifications, confirming the family's monophyly and revealing three major clades plus Rachisaurinae: ((Riolaminae(Rachisaurinae(Gymnophthalminae)))(Cercosaurinae)). Despite increased taxonomic efforts, especially in the tribes Bachiini and Cercosaurini, of Cercosaurinae, cytogenetic data remain limited. Of over 200 species in these tribes, only three had published karyotypes. Here, we provide new karyotypic data for seven s

Advanced-Stage Gonadal Dysgerminoma in a Patient With a Previous Diagnosis of Familial Swyer Syndrome: A Very Rare Genetic Entity.

INTRODUCTION: Swyer syndrome is a genetic abnormality characterized by a 46,XY karyotype in a phenotypically female individual. Affected individuals typically have average or tall stature, unambiguous genitalia at birth, the presence of Müllerian structures, and bilateral streak gonads. Familial Swyer syndrome is extremely rare, and we identified only two case reports describing families with two and three sisters affected by this syndrome. Individuals with Swyer syndrome have an increased risk of developing gonadal malignancies. CASE: A 19-year-old patient with primary amenorrhea, who had be

Disruption of meiotic sex chromosome inactivation by X-autosome translocations in Drosophila melanogaster.

In male heterogametic species, the difference in ploidy of the X chromosome between females (XX) and males (XY) has led to the evolution of sex chromosome-specific regulatory mechanisms. In Drosophila melanogaster, expression of the single X chromosome is upregulated in male somatic cells by the well-known process of dosage compensation. In contrast, expression of the X chromosome in the male germline is suppressed by an as yet unknown mechanism that has similarities to mammalian meiotic sex chromosome inactivation. To gain insight into this suppression, we carried out a forward mutagenesis sc

Superprotonic Conduction in Donor Co-Doped Perovskites.

Donor doping of oxygen-deficient BaScO2.5 is an unexplored strategy for achieving high proton conductivity at intermediate temperatures of 200-400 °C. In this work, a new series of BaSc1- x - yMoxWyO3- δ compounds was prepared via Mo/W donor co-doping where x is the Mo content, y is the W content, and δ is the amount of oxygen vacancies. The present work reports the enhancement of proton conductivity by the Mo/W donor co-doping of BaScO2.5. BaSc0.8Mo0.1W0.1O2.8 exhibits exceptional proton conductivity-0.10 S cm- 1 at 315 °C and 0.01 S cm- 1 at 193 °C-alongside outstanding chemical stability in

Recombination landscape shaped by inversion polymorphisms: a high-density linkage map and chromosome-level assembly of inversion-rich spruce bark beetle genome.

Understanding the recombination landscape is crucial for revealing the extent of its variation across the tree of life and for uncovering its underlying causes and evolutionary consequences. Among the many factors influencing recombination rates, polymorphic inversions are particularly important modifiers. Increasingly, complex inversion landscapes are being documented across diverse taxa, and detailed recombination rate data are essential for advancing our understanding of variation in inversion-rich genomes. Here, we combined whole-genome sequencing of 2 two-generation families with cytogene

Modulating the Electronic Structures of Co-Based Spinel Compounds via Rare Earth Tetrad Effect.

Rare earths (RE) are crucial strategic resources and have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in material modification. However, there is a wide variety of RE elements, and the mechanism for regulating electronic structure is unclear, which limits their accurate selection and efficient utilization. The RE tetrad effect divides RE elements into four groups, with the boundaries set at the points where the 4f electrons are filled to 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. Herein, we present a systematic strategy for regulating the electronic structure of Co-based spinel compounds via it. Research results on a series of

Beyond XX and XY, Understanding Sex Differences in Leukemia.

The major subtypes of leukemia show sex differences. This review summarizes current knowledge and identifies gaps regarding sex differences across acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphoblastic leukemia in epidemiology, mortality and survival rates, risk factors, and epigenetic, metabolomic, and sex-specific patterns. Males have higher incidence and mortality rates of leukemia compared to females, emphasizing the importance of biological sex. Underreporting of sex differences in leukemia is highlighted, suggesting that sex is often ove

Shifting the PPARγ conformational ensemble toward a transcriptionally repressive state improves covalent inhibitor efficacy.

The nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) regulates transcription in response to ligand binding at an orthosteric pocket within the ligand-binding domain (LBD). We previously showed that two covalent ligands, T0070907 and GW9662-extensively used as PPARγ inhibitors to assess off-target activity-weaken but do not completely block ligand binding via an allosteric mechanism associated with pharmacological inverse agonism (Shang and Kojetin, 2024). These covalent inhibitors shift the LBD toward a repressive conformation, where the activation function-2 (AF-2) he

Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha regulates fetal testis differentiation via an ERK-CREB axis.

Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (Pdgfra) plays a crucial role in mesenchymal cell differentiation, but the molecular signaling involved in this process remains unclear, particularly within the fetal testis. Here, we use XY Pdgfra-null gonads to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying testicular organogenesis, focusing on the formation of testicular architecture and the differentiation of fetal Leydig cells (FLCs), the steroidogenic lineage arising from mesenchymal precursors within the testicular interstitial compartment. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pa

Preferences of Mn, Ni and point defects at A, B and B sites, respectively, are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, while preference of Mn at the A site is not perfectly accomplished in Fe2.010Mn0.980O4. Mean-square displacements of atoms along the 3 axis in [111] are peculiarly large at the B site in Fe2.9
