AIM AND BACKGROUND: To study the procedure-related complications and outcomes of intrauterine transfusion (IUT) in fetal anemia.
METHODS: A single tertiary care center, retrospective observational study of severe fetal anemia treated with IUT. The influence of gestational age (GA) at transfusion, hydrops, and route of transfusion on procedure-related complications were studied and the postnatal outcomes were recorded.
RESULTS: A total of 59 IUT's were performed in 33 anemic fetuses. Rh isoimmunization (30/33) was the most common indication in 90.9%. The mean GA of fetuses who developed proce

The spread of invasive crayfish species poses a growing threat to freshwater ecosystems and public health, not only through direct ecological impacts but also by facilitating the transmission of symbionts and potential zoonotic pathogens. This study characterizes the symbiont diversity associated with the crayfish species that occur in northern Spain. In addition, the first comprehensive and comparative compilation of reported symbiont and parasite species of crayfish species reported in Iberia is provided. A combination of scanning electron and optical microscopy analysis and a review of the

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by trematodes belonging to the genus Paragonimus. It is acquired by ingesting freshwater crustaceans or raw game meat. Here, we report two patients (a couple) who developed paragonimiasis and pulmonary lesions with peripheral eosinophilia after sharing and consuming previously frozen freshwater crabs (Eriocheir japonica) together at the same restaurant in Tokyo. One patient developed peripheral airspace consolidation, which was initially misdiagnosed as chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, whereas the other exhibited eosinophilic pleural effusion. Antipar

Paragonimiasis is a foodborne zoonosis transmitted mostly by the consumption of inadequately cooked crabs and crayfish harboring Paragonimus metacercariae. We present the case of a 38-year-old male with a history of crab ingestion who developed severe eosinophilia, transaminitis, and serositis. Initial presentation included fever, epigastric pain, weight loss, and pleural effusion. He was managed empirically with albendazole and corticosteroids along with other supportive measures. Two months later, he re-presented with hemoptysis and hypoxemia. HRCT showed multiple cavitary pulmonary lesions,

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus, which use freshwater snails and crustaceans as intermediate hosts and mammals as definitive hosts. Despite its public health importance, few studies have documented the distribution of this parasite in tropical regions of Mexico. In April 2024, a total of 180 freshwater crabs of the genus Pseudothelphusa were collected from five localities in Oaxaca State, Mexico. Metacercariae were observed in 47.2% of the crabs examined, with the highest mean intensity (18.46 cysts per crab) recorded in San Pedro Molinos loc

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical characteristics of atypical subcutaneous nodule-type paragonimiasis in children and accumulate experience in its diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 3 pediatric cases with atypical subcutaneous nodule-type paragonimiasis.
RESULTS: All patients had a clear epidemiological history, significantly elevated peripheral blood eosinophils and positive Paragonimus antibodies. Oral praziquantel achieved excellent therapeutic effects, and surgery could serve as an adjuvant treatment.
CONCLUSION: Paragonimia

OBJECTIVES: Cysteine proteases, the major components of excretory-secretory substances excreted from adult Paragonimus worms, are known to be useful diagnostic antigens for human paragonimiasis. In this study, we developed immunochromatography-based kits to detect specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) antibodies against recombinant cysteine protease-6 (rCP-6) and evaluated their diagnostic performance.
METHODS: The rCP-6 was expressed in Escherichia coli, affinity-purified, and evaluated for immunoreactivity. The rCP-6-based immunochromatographic kits were evaluated for

Paragonimiasis, a food-borne zoonosis caused by Paragonimus spp., can cause severe pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. However, relationships among the host, parasite and lung microbiome at defined infection stages remain poorly understood. We compared independent groups of rats sampled at 14, 28 and 42 days post-infection (dpi), together with a separate group sampled after triclabendazole (TCBZ) treatment. Histopathological and molecular analyses were combined with multi-region (5R) 16S rRNA gene sequencing and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Groups sampled at later post-infection

Paragonimus spp. are foodborne trematodes with complex life cycles involving freshwater snails and decapod crustaceans. In Central America, Paragonimus mexicanus is a known zoonotic agent, whereas the public health significance of P. caliensis remains unclear. Between 2015 and 2016, we surveyed freshwater crabs across 51 sites in 15 river basins spanning three major climatic regions in Costa Rica. A total of 419 crabs (10 species) were examined for metacercariae; male crabs were identified morphologically, and infected females were identified to species by 16S rRNA and COI sequencing. Metacerc

OBJECTIVES: Central nervous system (CNS) paragonimiasis is relatively uncommon and its imaging findings have not been fully described in the limited literature. Our aim was to investigate the comprehensive imaging features of CNS paragonimiasis based on a large-scale case series study, with an emphasis on the unreported imaging findings.
METHODS: The clinical and imaging data of 206 pediatric patients with CNS paragonimiasis were continuously collected from 1181 cases of paragonimiasis in the past 12 years at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University (China). All patients underw

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis is a parasitic disease characterized by diverse clinical manifestations, among which pulmonary involvement is the most frequently observed. However, there are no documented cases of paragonimiasis presenting as a mediastinal mass. We report a case of paragonimiasis associated with such a presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: A large mediastinal mass was identified in a 13-year-old child. Due to the limited efficacy of antibiotics and indeterminate diagnosis, thoracoscopic surgery was performed. Histopathological findings were consistent with paragonimiasis. The patient re

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis, a foodborne zoonotic disease caused by Paragonimus (lung fluke) species, is prevalent mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. It is estimated that 23 million people are infected worldwide. Many reviews have been published in recent years, but very few reviews focused on distribution have been published. Here, we performed a review to map the global distribution of Paragonimus species.
METHODS: We systematically searched Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, African Journals Online, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang D

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis in children is rare as isolated pericardial effusion, especially when presenting despite the absence of elevated eosinophilia. We report such a case to highlight this atypical manifestation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old male child was admitted to the hospital with “pericardial effusion found for 5 days”. The initial differential diagnosis included infectious, autoimmune, and neoplastic causes of pericarditis. Laboratory tests on admission showed normal serum and pericardial effusion eosinophils, and the pericardial effusion was positive for paragonimiasis IgG. Mu

In recent years, the number of foreign technical intern trainees in Japan has been steadily increasing. As a result, opportunities to treat foreign patients with different cultures and customs have also increased and so has the possibility of encountering cases that have not been previously experienced. We report a case of a 25-year-old Cambodian man who is residing in Japan as a technical intern trainee. He presented with a chief complaint of headache and dizziness. After further examination, a diagnosis of intracerebral hemorrhage was made. Blood tests revealed peripheral eosinophilia, and c

Paragonimiasis, a parasitic infection caused by Paragonimus westermanii, presents with a range of symptoms, including chronic cough, chest pain, and hemoptysis, often mimicking tuberculosis. This case report describes the first documented case of Paragonimus westermanii infection in Bihar, India, presenting with hemoptysis. The patient, a 40-year-old female with a history of consuming smoked and improperly cooked crabs, exhibited eosinophilia and chest radiographic abnormalities. Microscopic examination of the sputum revealed characteristic Paragonimus eggs. Praziquantel treatment led to rapid

BACKGROUND: Paragonimus heterotremus is a parasitic flatworm endemic to Southeast Asia that causes pulmonary and extrapulmonary infections. While more common in adults, pediatric cases are rare and often present atypically, posing diagnostic challenges. Eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation due to parasitic infection is especially difficult to identify in children. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old female child initially exhibited subcutaneous swelling and notable peripheral blood eosinophilia, resulting in two hospital stays without a conclusive diagnosis. Upon admission to our center, labora

BACKGROUND Paragonimiasis, a food-borne parasitic zoonosis mainly caused by Paragonimus westermani and Paragonimus skrjabini in China, is rarely reported in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, a low-incidence urban setting. Paragonimiasis is often misdiagnosed due to its long incubation period, atypical manifestations, and low clinician awareness in non-endemic regions. Pleural effusion is common in thoracopulmonary paragonimiasis. We describe 2 imported, family-clustered pediatric cases (cousins) from endemic Zhaotong, Yunnan Province, both of whom presented with pleural effusion detected by chest c

This case report delineates a noteworthy diagnostic challenge at the intersection of hepatic infectious disease and oncology: The imaging features of atypical focal hepatic parasitic disease can overlap with those of hepatic malignancies, leading to a risk of misdiagnosis. We present a 38-year-old female with a left hepatic mass. Initial contrast-enhanced CT findings were suspicious for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), yet serological tumor markers were within normal limits. Subsequent contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) revealed paradoxical tunnel-like enhancement, typically associated
