Fetal karyotyping in adolescent pregnancies: a population-based cohort study on outcomes of invasive prenatal testing.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancies present unique challenges in prenatal diagnostics, yet data on the prevalence and types of chromosomal abnormalities in this population remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and spectrum of chromosomal abnormalities and evaluate the effectiveness of invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed data from invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures (amniocentesis and transabdominal chorionic villus sampling) and fetal karyotyping in adolescent pregnancies, comparing them with data obtained

A case report of a patient with Turner syndrome who develops catatonia secondary to psychotic symptoms.

RATIONALE: Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder associated with partial or complete monosomy X abnormalities; some patients may have a higher risk of psychiatric symptoms. Catatonia is associated with a wide range of life-threatening complications with complex pathogenesis; However, It very rare for patients with TS to develop psychotic symptoms and eventually progress to catatonia. This case report describes the diagnostic and therapeutic course of catatonia-associated TS. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this study, we report the case of a patient with TS who initially developed sudden hallucinat

Age at and indication for diagnosis of Turner syndrome in the pediatric population.

Early diagnosis of Turner syndrome (TS) enables timely intervention and may improve outcomes, but many are still diagnosed late. The objectives of our study were to describe the age and clinical features leading to diagnosis of TS in a large referral center. We hypothesize that newer testing modalities, such as noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT), may lead to a decline in the age of diagnosis. Medical records of TS patients followed at The Cincinnati Center for Pediatric and Adult TS Care between 1997 and 2016 were reviewed for age at diagnosis, karyotype, and clinical indication(s). Patients

Increased occurrence of liver and gastrointestinal diseases and anaemia in women with Turner syndrome - a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Liver and gastrointestinal diseases are frequent in women with Turner syndrome. However, their association with bleeding disorders, anaemia and the impact of hormone replacement therapy is unknown. AIMS: To investigate the risk of liver and gastrointestinal diseases, haemorrhage and anaemia in women with Turner syndrome compared with the female background population, and the long-term impact of hormone replacement therapy on these conditions. METHODS: One thousand one hundred and fifty-six women with Turner syndrome diagnosed during 1960-2014 were identified using the Danish Cyto

Neurological and neuropsychiatric complications of COVID-19 in 153 patients: a UK-wide surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding potential neurological complications of COVID-19 are being increasingly reported, primarily in small series. Larger studies have been limited by both geography and specialty. Comprehensive characterisation of clinical syndromes is crucial to allow rational selection and evaluation of potential therapies. The aim of this study was to investigate the breadth of complications of COVID-19 across the UK that affected the brain. METHODS: During the exponential phase of the pandemic, we developed an online network of secure rapid-response case report notification porta

Cardiac transplantation in children with Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, and other chromosomal anomalies: A multi-institutional outcomes analysis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence, characteristics, and outcomes in pediatric patients with chromosomal anomalies (CA) undergoing orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT). METHODS: A query of the database of the Pediatric Health Information System, a large administrative and billing database of 43 tertiary children's hospitals, was performed for the Years 2004 to 2016. Pediatric patients who received OHT were analyzed based on presence and type of CA. CA analyzed included: Down syndrome (DS); Turner syndrome (TS)/gonadal dysgenesis; conditions due to anomaly o

Contributions of pain sensitivity and colonic motility to IBS symptom severity and predominant bowel habits.

OBJECTIVES: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients show pain hypersensitivity and hypercontractility in response to colonic or rectal distention. Aims were to determine whether predominant bowel habits and IBS symptom severity are related to pain sensitivity, colon motility, or smooth muscle tone. METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine patients classified as IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D, N = 44), IBS with constipation (IBS-C, N = 29), mixed IBS (IBS-M, N = 45), and unspecified IBS (IBS-U, N = 11) based on stool consistency, and 30 healthy controls (HC) were studied. Further delineation of aortic dilation, dissection, and rupture in patients with Turner syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Although cardiovascular malformations (CVMs) are well-recognized congenital anomalies in Turner syndrome, aortic dilation and dissection are less common and less familiar. Most of the relevant literature is limited to single cases reports or small series. We sought to increase the information available about the frequency and characteristics of aortic dilation in patients with Turner syndrome. DESIGN: A 1-page survey of cardiac abnormalities, including aortic dilation, was mailed to approximately 1000 (1040 verified) members of the Turner Syndrome Society as an enclosure in the Jun
