In silico design of an epitope-based vaccine ensemble for fasliolopsiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Fasciolopsiasis, a food-borne intestinal disease is most common in Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Pigs are the reservoir host, and fasciolopsiasis is most widespread in locations where pigs are reared and aquatic plants are widely consumed. Human infection has been most commonly documented in China, Bangladesh, Southeast Asia, and parts of India. It predominates in school-age children, and significant worm burdens are not uncommon. The causal organism is Fasciolopsis buski, a giant intestinal fluke that infects humans and causes diarrhoea, fever, ascites, and intestinal blocka

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for the diagnosis and treatment of biliary Fasciolopsis buski: A rare case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Fasciolopsis buski can cause fasciolopsiasis, which usually parasitizes the duodenum and jejunum in humans, the biliary tract is rarely reported. However, as most infections are asymptomatic or present with nonspecific symptoms, they are often not diagnosed or sometimes even misdiagnosed. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the rare case of a 59-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital with a history of recurrent and unexplained abdominal pain for ≈11 years and worsening symptoms for 5 days. DIAGNOSES: Following laboratory tests, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, endoscop

Fasciolopsis buski isolated from human host, India has distinct clade based on nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences.

Fasciolopsiasis caused by Fasciolopsis buski, is a significant cause of morbidity. In the present study F. buski detected during endoscopy of a 50-year-old male patient form Uttar Pradesh, India was used for phylogenetic analysis based on 28S rDNA and ITS2 regions. The parasite was genetically similar to an isolate of pig from Meghalaya. The intra-species genetic variation for 28S rDNA was 1-3% (India), 5% (Vietnam) and for ITS2, 1-2% (India) while 17 % from Vietnam. Thus, F. buski from humans or pigs from India were closely related than those from Vietnam and China which were grouped into sep

Fasciolopsis buski Detected in Humans in Bihar and Pigs in Assam, India.

The foodborne intestinal trematode Fasciolopsis buski causes the neglected zoonotic disease fasciolopsiasis. We detected F. buski infection in 14 pediatric patients in Sitamarhi, Bihar, and in pigs in Sivasagar, Assam, India. Proper diagnostic methods and surveillance are urgently needed to accurately estimate the true burden of this disease in India.

Heavy Load of Intestinal Fluke in a Four-Year-Old Child with Severe Acute Malnutrition: A Case Report.

Fasciolopsiasis, a food-borne intestinal parasitosis, occurs focally, and remains a significant public health problem in endemic areas. However, due to the wide spectrum of clinical presentation and unclear diagnosis or even misdiagnosis, it often goes unreported. The correlation between trematode infection and malnutrition is also often debated. We report a case of heavy infection of Fasciolopsis buski in a 4-year-old girl with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The patient presented with a passage of many adult worms per stool following the consumption of some herbal concoction. A wet mount of

A review of Fasciolopsis buski distribution and control in Indonesia.

Fasciolopsiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the flatworm Fasciolopsis buski. Since 1982, fasciolopsiasis has been reported in Indonesia's Hulu Sungai Utara (HSU) Regency, South Kalimantan Province. Fasciolopsiasis occurs when contaminated raw or undercooked aquatic plants are consumed. Cercariae of the parasite encyst in a variety of aquatic plants and grow into metacercariae that infect and reproduce in the human intestine. Until now, treatment for F. buski infection in the HSU Regency has been comparatively short, with patients receiving only a single dose of praziquantel, 30 mg/kg bo

Fascioliasis and fasciolopsiasis: Current knowledge and future trends.

Food-borne zoonotic trematodiases are classified as neglected diseases by the World Health Organization. Among them, fascioliasis is caused worldwide by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, and represent a huge problem in livestock production and human health in endemic areas. Fasciolopsis buski, restricted to specific regions of Asia, causes fasciolopsiasis. The incidence of these trematodiases is underestimated due to under-reporting and to the lack of sensitive and widely accepted tool for their diagnosis. This, together with a rising trend in reporting of drug resistance and the need for an

An Autochthonous Human Case of Fasciolopsiasis in Nepal.

Fasciolopsiasis is rarely known as the parasitic disease in Nepal. Herein, we report a case of fasciolopsiasis in a 22-year-old man who was admitted in the hospital with abdominal pain, distension and loss of appetite for a month. He had previously diagnosed with acute viral hepatitis but, his abdominal pain was not resolving despite improvement in his liver function and general condition. During endoscopy an adult digenean worm was seen in the first part of the duodenum. After isolation, the worm was identified morphologically as Fasciolopsis buski. Microscogic examination of the patient's st

Snail-borne parasitic diseases: an update on global epidemiological distribution, transmission interruption and control methods.

BACKGROUND: Snail-borne parasitic diseases, such as angiostrongyliasis, clonorchiasis, fascioliasis, fasciolopsiasis, opisthorchiasis, paragonimiasis and schistosomiasis, pose risks to human health and cause major socioeconomic problems in many tropical and sub-tropical countries. In this review we summarize the core roles of snails in the life cycles of the parasites they host, their clinical manifestations and disease distributions, as well as snail control methods. MAIN BODY: Snails have four roles in the life cycles of the parasites they host: as an intermediate host infected by the first

Fasciolopsis buski infection in a Vietnamese pregnant woman with systemic lupus erythematosus.

A clinical case of infection caused by Fasciolopsis buski in a 24 weeks pregnant woman from Vietnam affected by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is reported here. On 22 February 2012 the patient was admitted to Hue Hospital in Hue, Vietnam, with a diagnosis of general illness and suspected acute anaemia. Laboratory analysis indicated possible SLE syndrome and coprological tests demonstrated the presence of F. buski eggs. During hospitalization the patient naturally eliminated the adult form in faeces suggesting the infection had already progressed at least for three months. One month after h

Praziquantel treatment in trematode and cestode infections: an update.

Status and emerging issues in the use of praziquantel for treatment of human trematode and cestode infections are briefly reviewed. Since praziquantel was first introduced as a broadspectrum anthelmintic in 1975, innumerable articles describing its successful use in the treatment of the majority of human-infecting trematodes and cestodes have been published. The target trematode and cestode diseases include schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis, paragonimiasis, heterophyidiasis, echinostomiasis, fasciolopsiasis, neodiplostomiasis, gymnophalloidiasis, taeniases, diphyllobothriasis,

A finding of live Fasciolopsis buski in an ileostomy opening.

A pair of live Fasciolopsis buski wriggled their way out through the ileostomy opening in a young adult male who had recently migrated to Delhi and had met with a road traffic accident. Finding this parasite in the national capital, a non endemic area for Fasciolopsiasis, prompted us to emphasize the importance of changes in the ecology, human demography, and human behaviour that may provide an environment conducive to their adaptability to the new geographical requirements. Awareness of Fasciolopsiasis, which is endemic in some regions of India, especially in rural settings, is an important i
