Infestation by the zoonotic trematode Fasciolopsis buski (fasciolopsiasis) is seen in several parts of South-East Asia. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, mucosal ulceration, intestinal obstruction, anasarca, and even fatality are described following heavy infestation. We present here the case of a 10-year-old boy from the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, India with heavy infestation by Fasciolopsis buski causing intestinal perforation. Fasciolopsiasis is by no means rare but its presentation as a case of intestinal perforation is extraordinary.

The authors consider the specific features of development ofa Fasciolopsis buski trematode in the environment and intermediate and final hosts. It has been ascertained that under the conditions of Vietnam, the eggs may develop in the temperature range of 20 to 34 degrees C, which takes 20 to 51 days. The eggs die at less than 12 degrees C. As a new intermediate host of the trematode, the authors have registered the mollusk Indoplanorbis exutus, the development of the parasite in which occurs within 32-37 days at 27-33 degrees C. Invasiveness of adolescaria reduces with age. The parasite develo

Reports of intestinal trematode infections are not common from Bihar, India. However, we herewith report one case of fasciolopsiasis from North Bihar, India. A 14 years old girl presented with diarrhea, vomiting, generalized pain abdomen and loss of weight. Routine stool examination and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed fasciolopsis buski in large numbers. Her rural life style and food habit (ingestion of raw vegetables- caltrops and water chest nuts) supported the cause of infestation. Despite treatment with praziquantel, the patient died after two days. Mild infestations of Fasciolop

Fasciolopsiasis is a disease caused by the largest intestinal fluke, Fasciolopsis buski. The disease is endemic in the Far East and Southeast Asia. Human acquires the infection after eating raw freshwater plants contaminated with the infective metacercariae. There has been no report of fasciolopsiasis either in man or in animal in Malaysia. We are reporting the first case of fasciolopsiasis in Malaysia in a 39-year-old female farmer, a native of Sabah (East Malaysia). This patient complained of cough and fever for a duration of two weeks, associated with loss of appetite and loss of weight. Sh

Fascioliasis and other food-borne trematodiases are included in the list of important helminthiases with a great impact on human development. Six plant-borne trematode species have been found to affect humans: Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica and Fasciolopsis buski (Fasciolidae), Gastrodiscoides hominis (Gastrodiscidae), Watsonius watsoni and Fischoederius elongatus (Paramphistomidae). Whereas F. hepatica and F. gigantica are hepatic, the other four species are intestinal parasites. The fasciolids and the gastrodiscid cause important zoonoses distributed throughout many countries, while W

Immunologic response to acute hepatitis C is mainly a Th1 response, whereas fasciolopsiasis is associated with a diverse T-cell response. Interferon-alpha has immunomodulatory effects and enhances Th1 immune response. Fasciola infection could theoretically interfere with the Th1 immune response, even when acquired after an initial response to interferon-alpha treatment for acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. We report here the case of a male patient who acquired Fasciola hepatica infection after an initial response to IFN-alpha therapy with a favorable outcome.

This review deals with waterborne zoonotic helminths, many of which are opportunistic parasites spreading directly from animals to man or man to animals through water that is either ingested or that contains forms capable of skin penetration. Disease severity ranges from being rapidly fatal to low-grade chronic infections that may be asymptomatic for many years. The most significant zoonotic waterborne helminthic diseases are either snail-mediated, copepod-mediated or transmitted by faecal-contaminated water. Snail-mediated helminthiases described here are caused by digenetic trematodes that u

The colloidal dye immunofiltration assay (CDIFA) combines the concepts of the double-antigen sandwich assay, the Dot immunofiltration assay, and colloidal dye-linked antigen technique to produce a new dye immunoassay for antibody detection in schistosomiasis. The CDIFA consisted of soluble egg antigen (SEA) of Schistosoma japonicum coated onto nitrocellulose membrane, mounted on a flow-through test device to provide the assay capture matrix. SEA absorbed to a red colloidal dye, R-3, produced in China, served as the antigen-antibody complex detecting reagents. The results showed that the sensit

Fasciolopsiasis, endemic to the Orient and Southeast Asia, is a snail-transmitted, intestinal, food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by a trematode, Fasciolopsis buski, which also infects farm pigs. Fasciolopsiasis remains a public health problem despite changes in eating habits, alterations in social and agricultural practices, health education, industrialization, and environmental alterations. The disease occurs focally and is most prevalent in school-age children. In foci of parasite transmission, the prevalence of infection in children ranges from 57% in mainland China to 25% in Taiwan and

Fasciolopsiasis, or infection by the intestinal fluke, Fascilopsis buski, is endemic in the eastern states of our country. While it is by no means a rarity, especially in the rural set up, awareness regarding this common parasitic infestation is still a much-needed entity. The importance of a strong degree of suspicion and early diagnosis cannot be over emphasised, if a successful campaign is to be launched in its control. With this as our central theme, we proceed to report a case of and unsually heavy Fasciolopsis buski infection in our hospital, which had failed to be diagnosed in a semi ur

Fasciolopsiasis is endemic in the far east. In India, there have been a few reports of the infection, prior to the 1990's. We report two cases from Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. Both the cases were from nearby villages where water chestnuts are cultivated. These may be a source of infection. Pigs are commonly observed in these areas and and may be the source of ova. The only missing link is the finding of infected snails. Presence of at least three cases (one reported earlier) in the area indicates the potential for the infection to re-emerge. Further epidemiological studies are needed t

In this study, naturally occurring anti-idiotypic antibodies in sera from patients with schistosomiasis japonica were demonstrated by using McAb (5B5H)-ELISA. McAb 5B5H against Schistosoma japonicum soluble egg antigen (SEA) was purified by precipitation with 50%, 40% and 33% saturated (NH4)2SO4 and coupled to CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B (Pharmacia). 5B5H column was loaded with sera from two patients with schistosomiasis japonica and then the bound material was eluated with 3M KCNS. The resulting eluate was further characterized with McAb-ELISA and complement fixation test in order to minimize

The People's Republic of China has a large number of animal parasites transmitted through the ingestion of food products. Approximately 20 species of parasites in animals and man are reported from most of the provinces and autonomous regions of the country. The major food-borne parasitic zoonoses are reported from pigs, cattle, fish, crabs and crayfish, snails, frogs, snakes, and aquatic plants. The most important diseases are toxoplasmosis, taeniasis, cysticercosis, sparganosis, clonorchiasis, fascioliasis, fasciolopsiasis, paragonomiasis, echinostomiasis, trichinosis, gnathostomiasis, and an

Although there have been no recent epidemiological studies on parasitic zoonoses in Hong Kong, the following diseases are known to occur locally: toxoplasmosis, clonorchiasis, fasciolopsiasis, cysticercosis, hydatidosis, sparganosis, trichinellosis, angiostrongyliasis, gnathostomiasis and trichostrongylosis. Most of them are due to the consumption of infected animals imported from China. Due to the general unawareness of parasitic diseases by physicians and health authorities, the importance of zoonoses has been under recognized.

Only a few food-borne parasitic zoonoses have been reported in Indonesia. The most frequently observed food-borne parasitic diseases are: toxoplasmosis, taeniasis and cysticercosis. Little data are available on other parasitic zoonoses in Indonesia. Taeniasis has been reported in nine provinces. Toxoplasmosis in humans, with prevalence rates ranging from 1 to 60%, has been reported in 12 provinces; in animals, toxoplasmosis is known to occur throughout the country, with serologically positive cases in as many as 75% of animals examined. However, it is expected that other parasitic zoonoses, su

The development of eggs of Fasciolopsis buski requires oxygen and the eggs cannot survive anaerobic conditions. The eggs have some resistance to low temperature and can be maintained at 4 degrees C for 3 to 4 months; however, the eggs are killed at 50 degrees C in four hours. The presence of salts can influence the development time of the eggs and reduce their hatching rate. Encysted cercariae exist not only on aquatic plants, but also on the surface of the water. The number of encysted cercariae floating on the water surface is about 3.6% of that of the total encysted cercariae. By inquiring

This study was conducted from March 1985 to September 1987 among the pupils of Chung-Ying Primary School of Hsia-Ying township in Tainan Country, Southern Taiwan. Health education revealed the preferred control method against Fasciolopsis infection in this study. The education method included lectures, demonstrations of parasites and home visits at regular intervals. The subjects included the staff and children of the school and all family members. At the same time, the children infected with Fasciolopsis were treated with praziquantel in June, 1986. Fecal material of the all primary school ch

Among the available immuno-diagnostic methods of parasitoses, dot-immunobinding assay (DIBA) has been proved to be promising for its high sensitivity and specificity, easy performance, lack of need of special equipment, and consequently its practical usage in field work. In previously reported tests, soluble antigen was used, thus a sonicator and an ultracentrifuge were required to produce the antigen. This paper reports the application of integral P. falciparum as antigen in DIBA to detect antibodies in falciparum malaria cases. Of 52 sera from falciparum malaria patients tested, 49 (94.2%) s
