Human schistosomiasis is a zoonotic disease, meaning that wild animals or livestock can serve as reservoirs for the disease. This sustains active parasite transmission in regions where extensive treatment initiatives are underway, potentially undermining efforts to combat schistosomiasis. In multi-host and multi-parasite systems, achieving disease elimination necessitates the incorporation of all reservoir hosts. For this reason, animal diagnosis is crucial to enable accurate targeting of treatment. However, methods for diagnosing animals remain underdeveloped. We have evaluated two commercial

Artificial light at night (ALAN) negatively impacts organisms in many ways, from their feeding behaviors to their response and ability to deal with disease. Our knowledge of ALAN is focused on hosts, but we must also consider their parasites, which constitute half of all described animal species. Here, we assessed the impact of light exposure on a model host-parasite system (Poecilia reticulata and the ectoparasitic monogenean Gyrodactylus turnbulli). First, parasite-free fish were exposed to 12:12 h light:dark (control) or 24:0 h light:dark (ALAN) for 21 days followed by experimental infectio

BACKGROUND: Despite the national campaigns in 1997 to control Opisthorchis viverrini (OV), a significant risk factor for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) was accounted for in the northeast of Thailand, which is also considered the highest-risk area for CCA as per the latest national-wide survey in 2019. Social innovations were employed to address OV and CCA issues in this area, but they have yet to be thoroughly investigated. Investigating social innovations in areas where issues can already be solved is a particular approach for expanding on a broad basis.

BACKGROUND: Persistent hotspots have been described after mass drug administration (MDA) for the control of schistosomiasis, but they have not been studied during the course of a multiyear MDA program.
METHODS: In data from a 5-year study of school-based and village-wide preventive chemotherapy strategies for Schistosoma mansoni, spatial scan statistics were used to find infection hotspots in 3 populations: 5- to 8-year-olds, 9- to 12-year-olds, and adults. Negative binomial regression was used to analyze changes from baseline, and receiver operating characteristic analyses were used to predi

A retrospective study on different Lymnaea glabra samples collected from central France between 1993 and 2010 was carried out to determine the prevalence of natural co-infections with Calicophoron daubneyi and Fasciola hepatica, and to specify the composition of redial burdens. Experimental infections of L. glabra performed during the same period of time were also analysed to study metacercarial production of each digenean in co-infected snails. Controls were naturally or experimentally co-infected Galba truncatula. In natural co-infections, prevalence was 0.7% in L. glabra (186/25,128) and 0.

Experimental infections of Egyptian Radix natalensis (shell height at miracidial exposure: 4 mm) with a French isolate of Fasciola hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions at 22 °C to specify the characteristics and follow the dynamics of their egg-laying. Controls constituted unexposed R. natalensis of the same size. No significant difference between controls and the uninfected snails of the exposed group was noted, whatever the parameter considered. In controls and exposed snails, the dates of the first egg masses were close to each other (56.4-65.3 days). In contrast, the life

Experimental infections of two South American lymnaeids (Lymnaea neotropica and L. viatrix var. ventricosa) with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out to determine if these snail species could sustain larval development of this digenean and, if so, to specify their potential for cercarial production. A French population of Galba truncatula infected and raised according to the same protocol served as controls. In both experiments, prevalence of P. daubneyi infections in snails did not significantly differ from each other. In snail groups evaluated for cercarial shedding (first experiment), a

The data on species diversity of trematodes from bats collected in the Middle Volga Region are summarized. According to original and literary data, 20 trematode species were recorded in bats of the region examined. Plagiorchis elegans, Lecithodendrium skrjabini, L. rysavyi, Prosthodendrium hurkovaae, and Pycnoporus megacotyle are specified for the bat fauna of Russia for the first time. For 11 species of parasites, new hosts are recorded. The analysis of bat helminthes demonstrated that the fauna of trematodes of the northern bat (12 species of trematodes), of the pond, and of the Brandt's bat

The simplest way to study the spatial pattern of a disease is the geographical representation of its cases (or some indicators of them) over a map. Maps based on raw data are generally "wrong" since they do not take into consideration for sampling errors. Indeed, the observed differences between areas (or points in the map) are not directly interpretable, as they derive from the composition of true, structural differences and of the noise deriving from the sampling process. This problem is well known in human epidemiology, and several solutions have been proposed to filter the signal from the

Processing of the same stool samples was done using standard Kato-Katz (KK) technique with 41.7 mg of stools and one of the three modifications. These included KK technique using a higher concentration of glycerin (one and quarter, usual one) for preparation, or another stain (negrosin-eosin), with a specified formula, instead of the standard malachite green, or processing a smaller volume of stools (20mg). The results showed that, using cumulative infection rate from the two comparable tests as the reference, KK with higher concentration of glycerin was more sensitive than standard KK (sensit

In the course of previous works, we described an IgM monoclonal antibody directed to a carbohydrate epitope located on the gut epithelium surface of the Schistosoma mansoni adult worm. We provided evidence that this epitope was present in all stages of the parasite and was particularly abundant in eggs. The current work was performed in order to specify the epitope localisation, at each stage, by immunohistochemical techniques. The epitope appears to be located on the peripheral membranes of the adult worm, while it is produced by the alive miracidium in the eggs located in the tissues and sub
