The effect of the calcium antagonist, nifedipine, on menstrual pain was investigated in 40 women with severe, primary dysmenorrhoea and 36 of them were observed over 3 consecutive menstrual cycles. Twenty-six patients experienced good pain relief, 10 moderate relief and 4 reported no benefit. The frequency of symptoms associated with menstrual pain was not reduced. Fifteen women regularly suffering from migraine during the menstrual period reported increased headache after intake of the drug. Oral administration of 50 mg tartrazine to 122 patients with a variety of allergic disorders caused the following reactions: general weakness, heatwaves, palpitations, blurred vision, rhinorrhoea, feeling of suffocation, pruritus and urticaria. There was activation of the fibrinolytic pathway as shown by reduction of plasminogen with high pre-kallikrein and low kallikrein values. The onset of action of three sympathomimetic drugs (rimiterol 0.2 mg, terbutaline 0.25 mg and isoprenaline 0.08 mg) administered by metered dose inhaler was compared in 12 asthmatics. In order to evaluate side effects of the drugs, a second dose of the aerosols, 8-10 times higher than the first one, was given after 30 min. The effects were measured in terms of VC, FEV1.0, PEF and heart rate. All the substances caused a significant increase in spirometric values within 1.5 min, the results with isoprenaline being slightly better than those with terbutaline. The purpose of this study was to determine whether adult patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can safely perform pulmonary hygiene measures without compromising their arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) levels (less than 80 per cent). A case of pheochromocytoma, which was discovered during the patient's admission for treatment of mandibular fracture, is presented. Pheochromocytoma represents a potentially life-threatening disease, but alsl is a curable cause of hypertension. Therefore, in spite of its low incidence, it is important that the oral surgeon consider it in his evaluation of the hypertensive patient, especially when associated symptoms of sweating, palpitations, and headache are present.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia often develops in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, particularly elderly women. It is heralded by a drop in the hematocrit, elevation of reticulocytes, development of jaundice, or a rise in the indirect fraction of serum bilirubin. Evidence of hemolysis supports the diagnosis, and a positive result of the Coombs test confirms it. Thirty-one patients who presented with the symptoms of palpitations and/or syncope were personally studied by the Holter monitor electrocardiogram method. The method is briefly described. A prospective, double-blind, randomized comparison of propranolol, 40 mg three times daily, and matching placebo showed propranolol to be no more effective than placebo in controlling hot flushes in a group of 25 perimenopausal women. Other menopausal symptoms, such as insomnia and palpitations, were equally unaffected. However, a very close correlation was found between the daily atmospheric temperature and the number of flushes occurring in the group.

Multiple, short runs of repetitive ventricular premature beats are present in 5 adolescents. These premature beats are continually present, uniform, long and variably coupled and occasionally fuse with sinus beats. This pattern is constant over several years and is associated with generally healthy individuals and otherwise normal hearts. Four of the subjects are completely asymptomatic without syncope or palpitations. The 5th case was asymptomatic for 2 yr until she died suddenly during sleep. Autopsy revealed a pathology of the specialized conduction system in the region of the AV junction.

Terbutaline, a selective beta2-adrenergic receptor stimulator was given to 10 patients with chronic bronchitis. The effects of the drug were tested by measurements of forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1), peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), heart rate, blood pressure and blood gas analysis. In a field study comprising 678 patients with arterial hypertension efficacy and tolerance of the stable combination VKB 105 consisting of 10 mg Pindolol (Visken) and 5 mg Clopamid (Brinaldix) were investigated. Treatment with 1--2 tablets of VKB per day resulted in a successful therapy in 94% of all patients corresponding on the average to a reduction in blood pressure to 145/85 mm Hg within 14 days. 45 patients with an age of 3--15.5 yr are reported. Only 9 of them showed symptoms (palpitations, dyspnea, fatigue). The murmur was often uncharacteristic, only 42% had a click. ECG changes could be found in 60%. The associated cardiac lesions and the angiographic findings are represented. Correlating to an angiocardiographically LVOTO we found in 13 patients (28.9%) the echocardiographic signs of an ASH with a septum/LV posterior wall quotient of 1.45 +/- 0.15. We conclude, that myocardial disease is one pathogenetic factor in the MVPS.

The value of 24-hour ambulatory monitoring of the ECG for the diagnosis of symptoms of dizziness, palpitations and syncope is controversial. In this study results from a hospital-based, clinical service have been analysed.
