Iocetamic acid (Cholebrin) and calcium ipodate (Solubiloptin) were randomly allocated to two groups of 50 patients. Each patient completed a detailed questionnaire for side effects. There was no significant difference between the contrast media in their ability to opacify the gallbladder. In a study of 10 patients suffering from hypertension the results showed that combination treatment with prazosin, cyclopenthiazide and a beta-blocker produced a significant fall in blood pressure. Side-effects such as palpitations, headache, syncope and drowsiness which may occur with prazosin alone were obviated by combining prazosin with a beta-blocker.

The syndrome of mitral valve prolapse with associated auscultatory-electrocardiographic findings is now well documented. Two representative cases of repetitive tachyarrhythmias in patients with mitral valve prolapse are discussed as well as an analysis of the 589 cases in the English literature of arrhythmias in patients with mitral valve prolapse. The correlation between palpitations and arrhythmias was examined using 319 long term Ecgs of 167 patients. Furthermore, we attempted to determine the shortest possible recording time permitting the correct diagnosis of an arrhythmia and ST-segment changes. 31 arrhythmias (9.7%) were correctly identified by our patients; On the other hand, while there were 20 palpitations (39%) that could not be related to an arrhythmia we recorded 39 instances in which these same patients missed an arrhythmia. A 55 year old woman with palpitations during ingestion of food or drink was evaluated with surface, esophageal and dynamic electrocardiographic techniques. Recordings documented the consistent induction of supraventricular tachycardia by swallowing; no definable gastrointestinal or other cardiac abnormality was present. Nine previously reported cases are reviewed, with special reference to the role of vagovagal reflexes in the pathogenesis of this unusual clinical syndrome.

Since 1971 we have employed the Morrow procedure in 30 patients with idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS). All manifested obstruction to left ventricular outflow either at rest or with provocation (Valsalva) and 17 had moderate or severe mitral regurgitation. There were no operative deaths. Obstruction was abolished in all patients except one in whom a trivial 15-mm pressure gradient persisted, and all patients with moderate or severe mitral regurgitation evidenced marked amelioration of the mitral regurgitation. We present clinical and electrophysiological data on 9 patients with paroxysmal reciprocating sinus tachycardia (PRST) of whom only 6 described palpitations. A new aerosol bronchodilator, carbuterol, was compared with isoproterenol during a three-month double-blind trial in 15 matched pairs of patients with relatively stable and partially reversible obstructive airways disease. Pulmonary function tests were performed at baseline and at 30 and 120 minutes after bronchodilator administration on days 1, 15, 28, 56, and 84. Isoproterenol and carbuterol produced improvement in all parameters at 30 and 120 minutes. Left ventricular function, as measured by systolic time intervals, was studied in 30 subjects with the syndrome of midsystolic click and late systolic murmur (ages, 20 to 53 years; mean, 34 +/- 9 years). Tachycardias may be associated with the pre-excitation syndrome, a short PR interval or a prolonged QT interval. A crossover comparison of metoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide has been performed in 20 patients with mild hypertension. A 48 year old female presented with a long history of palpitations and syncopal episodes. His bundle electrogram studies were performed in order to evaluate the conduction system. The electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed normal PR and QRS intervals, while the unpaced His electrogram was normal. With atrial pacing rates of 110 to 180 beats/min, the AH and HV intervals remained essentially unchanged. This signifies that there was an accessory conduction pathway which bypassed the AV node. Thus, pre-excitation can not be eliminated as a diagnostic possibility even if the ECG is normal.
