Phonocardiogram (PCG) is a graphical representation of heart sounds and murmurs, playing a vital role in the early screening and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this study, we propose a first camera-stethoscope that is capable of recording PCG contactlessly, enabled by the principle of defocused speckle imaging (DSI). By illuminating the chest surface adjacent to the heart with a laser beam and employing a defocused camera to capture the reflected laser speckle interference, the subtle cardiac vibrations involved in heart sound generation are magnified and measured. INTRODUCTION: Aging is associated with an increased risk of morbidity, multimorbidity and mortality in cats. However, longitudinal cohort studies are somewhat limited in this species. Information about the prevalence and incidence of age-related disease, combinations of morbidities, and factors associated with mortality could provide insights into the impact of aging on the welfare of domestic cats.
METHODS: The prevalence and incidence of common age-related diseases, patterns of multimorbidity and causes and risk factors for mortality were investigated in a prospective longitudinal cohort st

BACKGROUND: Cardiac murmurs are common in childhood, yet their detection often triggers significant parental anxiety. This study aimed to measure anxiety levels in parents of infants and young children under 24 months of age referred to pediatric cardiology due to heart murmurs, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) before and after examination, and to investigate the impact of expert assessment and echocardiography (ECHO).
METHODS: This prospective study included parents of 241 asymptomatic children (under 24 months) referred for initial cardiac evaluation due to a murmur. Parenta

Pediatric heart murmurs are common findings during physical examination, but only a small number of cases require intervention. This case report highlights a routine physical examination for a 10-year-old male patient that revealed a grade III/VI harsh systolic murmur heard in all areas of auscultation and a fixed split S2. A subsequent transthoracic echocardiogram showed an atrial septal defect that required catheter-based closure. This case proved to be one of the few cases in which urgent treatment of the heart murmur is required, and it helps highlight the features of pathologic murmurs th

BACKGROUND: We describe a patient with a "northwest" cardiac axis and electrocardiographic features of right ventricular (RV) pressure overload in the setting of Fontan circulation.
TAKE-HOME MESSAGES: In atrioventricular canal defects with Fontan circulation, a northwest cardiac axis on electrocardiography reflects altered RV activation and remodeling, often persisting from childhood into adulthood and secondary to RV outflow tract obstruction.
CASE SUMMARY: A 28-year-old woman presented for routine medical follow-up. Medical history was notable for Fontan procedure, with the last operation

Anurse-led heart murmur clinic was introduced at Sheffield Children's Hospital in 2023 to reduce waiting times, support the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) role development, and improve cost-efficiency. By triaging appropriate referrals to a CNS-led pathway with pre-arranged echocardiography and telephone follow-up, the clinic reduced wait times from 16 to 5-6 weeks and saved over £3,000 in its first year. The model demonstrates that nurse-led services can safely and effectively manage selected paediatric referrals, improve access to care, and deliver measurable service efficiencies.

A systolic murmur best heard at the aortic area with radiation to the neck is considered a hallmark of aortic stenosis. We report a patient with this auscultatory pattern in whom investigation revealed an unexpected diagnosis. Accompanying symptoms reinforced the initial suspicion, adding another layer of complexity to the diagnostic process. This case highlights the limitations of relying solely on symptom profile and murmur topography, and underscores the importance of comprehensive physical examination and diagnostic imaging in evaluating valvular heart disease.

Heart disease continues to be the world's number one killer, making low-cost, early screening a priority. A phonocardiogram (PCG), a simple recording of sounds made by the heart, provides valuable clues to conditions such as murmurs and valve defects and can be recorded cheaply using a digital stethoscope. With less accessibility to specialists, the automatic analysis of heart sounds is preferred for screening and tele-health environments. We compare five deep convolutional neural networks in this work, namely LeNet5, AlexNet, VGG16, ResNet-50 and a hybrid LSTM-CNN, on the task of separating n

BACKGROUND: Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a rare, chronic, idiopathic large-vessel vasculitis. Early stages are often underdiagnosed. It can lead to arterial wall thickening, stenotic or occlusive lesions, and aneurysms, resulting in stroke, blindness, refractory hypertension, or heart failure.
CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old woman presented with dyspnea, upper limb claudication, discrepant arm blood pressures, and murmur in the interscapular region. Computed tomography scan revealed multiple calcified saccular aneurysms and postductal aortic coarctation. The heart team favored medical management,

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation of monomorphic premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) in symptomatic or haemodynamically compromised patients has a Class I recommendation in cardiomyopathy and a Class IIa recommendation in patients comprising non-outflow tract PVC morphology and a physiologic anatomy according to current ESC guidelines. It is therefore widely performed and generally considered safe. Rare but clinically significant complications can occur and may present considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
CASE SUMMARY: A 77-year-old woman underwent radiofrequency (RF) cathete

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are a common cause of chronic renal disease and usually manifest either antenatally or in the early years of life. Solitary Kidney with Renal Dysplasia presents early in life due to regular antenatal sonographic scans. The rarity of diagnosis being deferred until adulthood has important implications when there is prematurity and other associated congenital anomalies, such as Congenital Heart Disease.

Cardiovascular (CV) disease is the leading cause of mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in SLE is twice the incidence and ten years earlier in onset than in the general population. We present the first known case in the Philippines of acute MI from triple vessel coronary artery disease (CAD) in a young female patient with SLE. This aims to increase recognition and improve preventive strategies for this rare lupus complication. A 31-year-old female with SLE for thirteen years, antiphopspholipid syndrome (APS) and controlled hypertension (HTN)

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but life-threatening condition that poses diagnostic and management challenges, particularly in cases involving atypical presentations or uncommon pathogens. This is a case of a 54-year-old male patient who presented with gastrointestinal (GI) and constitutional symptoms of one week duration, including abdominal pain, intermittent fever, and unintentional weight loss. He tested positive for Helicobacter pylori gastritis that did not improve with antibiotics and supportive management during admission. Further inpatient evaluation revealed new heart murmurs

BACKGROUND: Systolic murmurs are common in adults without significant valvular heart disease (VHD) and are more prevalent in women than in men, but the determinants of murmur audibility remain unclear. We aimed to identify the physiological determinants of innocent murmurs and examine the basis for sex differences in murmur prevalence.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional population-based study, we analysed data from 1680 participants in Tromsø7 without significant VHD who underwent echocardiography and heart sound recording. We used multivariable logistic regression with complete-case data from

A four-year-old female neutered Labrador retriever was referred for investigation of paroxysmal tachycardia. On physical examination, a heart rate of 220 beats/min with no heart murmurs was noticed. Cardiac troponin I was significantly increased. A six-lead electrocardiography revealed phases of narrow QRS complexes tachycardia with regular RR intervals and a QP'/P'Q of 0.80, compatible with orthodromic atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia (OAVRT), alternating with sinus rhythm. On ambulatory electrocardiography, initial phases of OAVRT were followed by sinus rhythm. The sinus beats were
