Misophonia is a disorder characterized by exaggerated emotional responses and heightened autonomic arousal triggered by specific sounds. Despite evidence that higher-level cognitive processes contribute to misophonia, it remains uncertain whether they can be used to modulate misophonic responses to trigger sounds. Based on the observation that individuals with misophonia often report listening to music as a coping mechanism, we investigated how directing attention to music could modulate physiological responses of individuals with misophonia in the presence of trigger sounds. Participants with

In this case report of a 36-year-old with a remotely healed tracheostomy stoma, urgent intubation led to false passage formation despite the endotracheal tube appearing to pass through the vocal cords. Absent end-tidal CO₂ and breath sounds were initially attributed to severe bronchospasm, but progressively increasing subcutaneous air prompted fiberoptic bronchoscopy, which revealed a paratracheal false passage. The patient developed hypoxic cardiac arrest, required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and, ultimately, died. This case underscores the critical need for early bronchoscopy evalua

BACKGROUND: Tension gastrothorax is a rare but life-threatening pediatric emergency that most commonly results from herniation of the stomach through an unrecognized congenital diaphragmatic defect, followed by progressive intrathoracic gastric distension and compression of intrathoracic structures. Because its clinical presentation often mimics tension pneumothorax, delayed diagnosis, or inappropriate management may rapidly lead to obstructive shock, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest. Prompt recognition and timely intervention are therefore essential to prevent fatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Primary care providers (PCPs) are not successful in accurately identifying Still's murmur with no available clinical tools to aid in the process. Existing deep learning (DL) methods primaryly focused on adult pathological murmurs or murmur detection, lacking dedicated approaches for Still's murmur. Furthermore, the absence of a specialized database hampers the development and validation of AI models for pediatric populations.
OBJECTIVE: To collect a pediatric dataset and evaluate DL methods in identifying Still's murmur in pediatric patients from phonocardiograms (PCGs) acquired u

OBJECTIVE: Identifying the first and second heart sounds (S1 and S2) from phonocardiogram (PCG) signals is an essential step in automating the diagnosis of cardiac conditions such as irregular heartbeat, valve misfunctions, and heart failure. Recent research inspired by image segmentation has shown promise in utilising deep neural networks for point-wise PCG segmentation with the support of synchronised electrocardiogram (ECG). This paper shifts the focus from point-wise segmentation to identifying the onset/offset of S1 and S2 heart sounds in the PCG signal.
METHODS: We incorporate the ECG s

The number of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases has been steadily increasing, with the majority occurring in underdeveloped regions. Doctors in less developed regions often have limited clinical experience to diagnose these diseases by listening heart sounds, whereas artificial intelligence can serve as a valuable tool to assist them in conducting auxiliary diagnoses. However, small samples and strong noise reduce the diagnosis accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, a novel method is put forward for heart sound classification, which integrates sample augmentation and injected noise dual atten

INTRODUCTION: Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds (known as triggers) cause a negative and often overwhelming emotional response. Common triggers include human-produced and repetative sounds such as chewing and tapping. The extent to which this response is modulated by task focus - such as whether a sound is attended or not - is largely unknown. Similarly, the extent to which these responses are specific to triggers or found, to some degree, for a wider range of stimuli is unclear.
METHODS: In this study, two groups (misophonics, controls) engage in a visuo-motor task during the

Heart failure (HF) represents a growing clinical and socioeconomic burden worldwide, placing increasing pressure on health care systems in both high- and low-resource settings. Remote patient care (RPC), encompassing telemonitoring and other digitally enabled strategies, has emerged as a promising adjunct to conventional follow-up by enabling continuous physiological assessment and early detection of clinical deterioration. Such proactive surveillance facilitates timely therapeutic adjustments and may improve patients' outcomes. A broad range of monitoring approaches is currently available or

The acoustic variability index (AVI), derived from continuous phonocardiographic analysis of heart sounds via an esophageal stethoscope, is a novel minimally invasive method for intraoperative hemodynamic monitoring. We evaluated the ability of AVI to predict fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing hepatectomy and compared its performance with that of the conventional indices. Forty adult patients who underwent hepatectomy were enrolled in this prospective, single-center observational study. After major surgical resection and stabilization, a 500 mL crystalloid fluid challenge was administ

Pupil-based biofeedback has been shown to enable healthy participants to volitionally control locus coeruleus-mediated arousal. The locus coeruleus is considered a critical player in the central stress circuitry and dysfunctions in the system, causing dysregulated arousal levels, have been tightly linked to neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety and stress-related disorders and stress-induced cardiovascular vulnerability. Yet, it remains unclear whether physiological and self-rated affective responses to emotional stimuli are influenced by volitional control of arousal levels. In this stud

Stress increased markedly in recent years, highlighting the need for effective and accessible relaxation strategies. Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a promising intervention. While most prior VR studies were conducted under controlled conditions, the present study explored the acceptability and feasibility of VR as a relaxation tool in naturalistic settings. Additionally, it explored the effects on the perceived level of relaxation and mood, and whether heart rate (HR) data obtained from consumer-grade wearables correlated with changes in psychological state. The study involved 160 partici

Singing and vocalization practices are reportedly associated with increased relaxation, better emotional regulation, and enhanced social closeness. Here, we investigate the neural underpinnings of such effects and ask whether they are related to processes linked to the vocalization aspect or are a result of modified breathing patterns. Toning is a form of vocalization involving the expression of vocal sounds for the duration of the exhalation, often resulting in a slower breathing frequency compared to rest. It is increasingly used in therapeutic environments, but its neural underpinnings are

Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of these diseases are of critical importance. Stethoscopes are the easiest and fastest medical devices for the initial diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, interpreting heart sounds requires considerable expertise. The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare for decision support has increased and become popular recently. Methods: The popular 2016 PhysioNet/CinC Challenge dataset, consisting of phonocardiogram (PCG) signals, was used to implement the p

Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) is a rare developmental lung anomaly that may present in the neonatal period with respiratory distress, and its association with dextrocardia is exceptional, potentially leading to diagnostic challenges. We report the case of a 26-day-old male neonate, born at term, admitted for cyanosis and respiratory distress. Clinical examination revealed tachypnea (68 breaths per minute), oxygen desaturation (SpO₂ 65% in room air), and signs of respiratory distress, with cardiac auscultation suggesting right-sided heart sounds. Imaging studies demonstrated a

BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the chromosome 17q12-q21 region and, independently, early-life nasal microbiota dominated by Moraxella, Streptococcus, or Haemophilus (MSH) increase risk of chronic wheeze and asthma development.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether 17q12-q21 risk SNPs and nasal microbiota interact to modulate childhood wheeze risk.
METHODS: Nasal wash samples from 12-month-old infants in 2 birth cohorts, COAST (Childhood Origins of Asthma; n = 180) and URECA (Urban Environment and Childhood Asthma; n = 139), underwent 16S ribosomal RNA variable regi

INTRODUCTION: The global prevalence of heart failure continues to increase, particularly in ageing populations. Many older patients receiving home-based medical care have limited access to standard diagnostic tools, such as chest radiography and echocardiography, which can delay the detection of disease progression. AMI-SSS01, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based portable phonocardiography device, enables rapid and reproducible analysis of heart sounds, potentially allowing earlier identification of heart failure exacerbations in home-based medical settings. This trial aims to evaluate the fe

Music and sounds elicit a wide range of emotions and activate numerous psychological and physiological effects associated with the functioning of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and involved in the maintenance of homeostasis. As such, sound interventions can play an important role in supporting human wellbeing and improve outcomes in medical patients. Psychophysiological responses are dependent on the stimulus type, frequency, duration, and spatial conditions of the acoustic environment. To arrive at a more articulate understanding of these dependencies, the effects of singing bowl sounds a

Misophonia is characterized by decreased tolerance to specific trigger sounds, yet the underlying physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Misophonic responses are also often reported to be elicited not only by the auditory triggers themselves, but also by visual cues associated with those sounds. However, direct empirical evidence for visual cues associated with auditory triggers remains limited. Moreover, it is not known if misophonic responses can be elicited in the absence of any sensory input, such as during auditory mental imagery. The present study systematically examined phys

Peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) is a rare congenital anomaly that requires surgical treatment. Its clinical presentation varies and can affect one or more abdominal organs. This case report refers to a recently described surgical technique called ventral advancement of the diaphragm (VADT). Previously, a complete diagnostic approach was made in a 4-month-old, 6 kg (13.22 lbs.), uncastrated, mixed breed dog, with a history of cough from the time of adoption, with no known record of trauma. Physical examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnea, body condition score of 5/9, positi
