Oxprenolol, a beta-blocker, is an effective antihypertensive when administered 3 or 4 times daily. We evaluated the antihypertensive effect of oxprenololgiven twice daily (bid). The subjects were 15 ambulatory men whose standing diastolic blood pressure (BP) was at least 100 mm Hg after 3 wk of treatment with hydrochlorothiazide and oxprenolol placebo. Oxprenolol 40 mg twice daily was then substituted for the placebo. On subsequent weekly vists oxprenolol was titrated to 80 and 160 mg bid if the standing diastolic BP was greater than 90 mm Hg. During 1973 through 1975, more than 1 million persons were screened in the nationwide Community Hypertension Evaluation Clinic (CHEC) program at 1,171 sites. While those screened were not from defined populations, findings paralleled those of recent surveys of US population samples. Between January 1974 and March 1975, blood pressures were taken on all 2,222 dental patients admitted for treatment at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. In a double-blind trail in 22 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension, indapamide was compared with chlorathiazide and placebo. Dosage levels were set at 5 mg. indapamide and 500 mg. chlorothiazide daily, for 5 days out of 7, and patients were treated alternately, in random sequence, with each drug for a month over a 3-month period. The sequence of pathophysiological changes that can result from the stimulating effects of a sustained disturbance of the social environment was studied in ten colonies of socially deprived mice. A model for the investigation of blood pressure changes resulting from a renal arteriovenous (A-V) fistula is presented. After base line blood pressures were established in five adult mongrel dogs by carotid loop puncture, an A-V fistula was constructed between the right renal artery and vena cava. Weekly blood pressure determination showed a rise in systolic and diastolic pressure over control values. Split renal vein renins and split function studies were obtained at 3 months postfistula. The interesting problem is considered of a comatose alcoholic diabetic with an extremely high systolic blood pressure, as determined by the usual means, who was subsequently found to have severe medial calcinosis and normal intraarterial blood pressure. The syndrome of the noncompressible brachial artery surely accounts for this patient's falsely elevated blood pressure reading. Though infrequently reported, this condition can be one cause of "difficult to control" hypertension in the elderly and in the diabetic patient.

Hypertensive blood pressure readings were recorded in 282 women from a group of 1025 consecutive patients returning for their sixth-week postpartum visit.
