Case report on refractory epistaxis successfully treated with a novel taping therapy: A new approach.

RATIONALE: Epistaxis is a very common nose disease that often requires hospital admission. Chemical therapies, surgery, and nasal packing have mostly been used for treatment; however, it remains prevalent, and noninvasive treatments using meridian and acupuncture theory have rarely been studied. Here we report two chronic cases that were successfully treated with novel taping therapy. PATIENT CONCERNS: First, a 62-year-old male patient with right-side epistaxis, which appeared almost every morning and had lasted for6 months visited. Second, a 9-year-old female patient with both-side epistaxis

Unilateral proptosis as the primary presentation of Stage IVb Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma with direct external carotid artery supply: Case report.

Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign, hypervascular tumor that typically presents with nasal symptoms. However, when it presents with isolated ophthalmic features, it can lead to significant diagnostic pitfalls. We report a rare "ophthalmic-first" presentation of a Stage IVb JNA in a 19-year-old male. The patient presented only with progressive unilateral proptosis for 7 months, initially misdiagnosed as a traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula due to a history of minor head trauma. Advanced imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) corrected the diagnosis by

Integrating optoacoustic microscopy with existing and emerging imaging modalities: a review.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the distribution of fetal nuchal translucency thickness in normal and chromosomally abnormal fetuses in Sardinia and to determine the effectiveness of screening by a combination of fetal nuchal translucency and maternal age. METHODS: Fetal nuchal translucency thickness and crown-rump length were measured at 10-14 weeks of gestation in 12 495 pregnancies. A reference range of fetal nuchal translucency thickness for crown-rump length was determined from the 10 001 singleton pregnancies with known normal pregnancy outcome. The median nuchal translucency thickness for crown-

Monthly bleeding nasal endometriosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease defined as the presence of functional endometrial glands and stroma outside of the uterus. Depending on the area identified, endometriosis can be pelvic and extrapelvic. The nasal mucosa is an exceptional localization for endometriosis. This case is important because there are few case reports in the world, and it will give an insight for physicians to have index of suspicion for nasal endometriosis in those female patients in the reproductive age presented with cyclic nasal bleeding. CASE PRESENTATION: This patient

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma of the sinonasal tract: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas of the sinonasal tract (ENA-SNT) are exceptionally rare tumors that remain poorly characterized in the literature. We aim to systematically review and synthesize the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of ENA-SNT. METHODS: This review adhered to PRISMA guidelines. A literature search was conducted across major databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles that reported ENA-SNT cases in humans were eligible for inclusion. Data extraction and quality assessment were independently performed by two revie

Unmasking a Rare Genetic Puzzle: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia in a Black Kenyan Woman: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by mucocutaneous and visceral telangiectasias, often leading to severe complications. This case report presents an uncommon manifestation of HHT in a 57-year-old Black Kenyan female with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Given the rarity of HHT in our region, this case underscores the importance of early recognition, particularly in resource-limited settings, to improve patient outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old Black Kenyan female presented with recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding. E

Unique Imaging Findings of a Calvarial Ossifying Fibroma Successfully Managed With Surgery and Definitive Intent Radiotherapy.

This case report describes a 6-year-old female neutered Boxer dog diagnosed with calvarial ossifying fibroma presenting with left-sided periocular swelling, nasal discharge, epistaxis, and subtle exophthalmos. Diagnostic investigations included serial computed tomography (CT; five studies over 14 months), ultrasound-guided needle aspiration, surgical biopsy, and CT-guided core biopsy. CT identified a well-delineated, non-mineralized, strongly enhancing expansile lesion within the orbital portion of the left frontal bone with retrobulbar tissue displacement and a lobular sinonasal mass causing

Endoscopic endonasal approach with extended orbital roof removal for a giant esthesioneuroblastoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a rare malignant tumor originating from the olfactory epithelium, often involving the anterior skull base with intracranial extension. Surgical management options include the transcranial approach combined with the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) or purely EEA. However, conventional indications for EEA are limited to tumors with lateral extension not exceeding the midorbital line, due to restricted lateral exposure. Logically, extending the resection of the orbital roof bone can enhance lateral access, potentially expanding the surgical indication

Circulating angiogenic and inflammatory biomarkers profiling in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an inherited vascular disorder affecting BMP9-ALK1-endoglin signaling, leading to vascular malformations. HHT is marked by recurrent bleeding (mostly epistaxis and gastrointestinal) that can result in severe anemia. Thus, there is a need for circulating biomarkers to quantify clinical severity, monitor response to anti-angiogenic therapies such as bevacizumab and to support diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an exploratory, observational, prospective study conducted in an HHT referral Unit. We profiled 22 circulating angiogenic

The routine use of nasopharyngeal airway in the setting of monitored anesthesia care during gastrointestinal endoscopy: A multi-center single blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) is commonly used for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, allowing patients to breathe spontaneously while sedated. Despite its benefits, MAC is associated with respiratory adverse events, such as desaturation or the need for interventions. Limited studies have examined the effectiveness of nasopharyngeal airways (NPA) in reducing airway maneuvers and improving respiratory stability during MAC. The study evaluates the efficacy and safety of NPA in reducing the occurrence of at least one airway intervention/desaturation in patients undergoing GI

Does prior nasopharyngeal airway dilatation improve nasotracheal intubation with suction catheter guidance? A prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding during nasotracheal intubation occurs in approximately 80% of cases, caused by injury to the turbinate or avulsion of the mucosa during the passage of the endotracheal tube (ETT). Anatomical variations and sudden changes in direction during the passage of the ETT aggravate the trauma. Among the mechanical and pharmacological methods described to minimize bleeding, the use of a soft malleable guide to railroad the ETT into the hypopharynx and the instillation of vasoconstrictor drops have been found to be effective. Studies comparing added dilation using a nasopharyngeal ai

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia in a 72-year-old woman presenting with recurrent epistaxis and liver cirrhosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare inherited vascular disorder characterized by mucocutaneous telangiectasias and visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Although epistaxis often begins in childhood, serious complications, particularly hepatic involvement and, rarely, cirrhosis, manifest later. Hepatic AVMs can cause portal hypertension, high-output cardiac failure, and regenerative liver changes mimicking cirrhosis. True cirrhosis is uncommon but may obscure diagnosis, underscoring the need for early recognition and multidisciplinary manage

Traumatic Carotid-Cavernous Fistula in a Child with Nasal Penetrating Injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic penetrating carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is an uncommon complication of craniofacial trauma, particularly in pediatric patients. Prompt recognition is essential to prevent irreversible visual and neurological deficits. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 2.5-year-old boy who sustained a penetrating nasal injury caused by a screwdriver. He initially presented with epistaxis and subsequently developed left-sided proptosis, chemosis, and restricted ocular motility. Early imaging studies were inconclusive, and orbital cellulitis was initially suspected. DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGE

A bloody surprise: rare presentation of pituitary apoplexy with epistaxis-a case report.

Pituitary apoplexy (PA) is an endocrine emergency caused by haemorrhage or infarction of the pituitary gland, often occurring in patients with known tumours. Classical presentation includes headache, visual disturbances, and cranial nerve palsies. We describe a rare presentation of PA with epistaxis in a 71-year-old man with a known non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma. On admission, he had acute confusion, worsening headache, and left-sided epistaxis with signs of Cranial Nerve (CN) III palsy and reduced consciousness. Initial Computerized Tomography (CT) showed a stable macroadenoma withou
