BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a subclass of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression and play important roles in infectious diseases. Echinococcosis is a globally distributed disease caused by various species of Echinococcus. The disease can be asymptomatic in the early stages, but if left untreated, it can lead to severe complications. Like other helminths, Echinococcus spp. exhibit immunomodulatory capacities that favour infection establishment and progression. Currently, there is no fully accurate, non-invasive method for early detection of echinococcosis. This systematic re

BACKGROUND The use of ex vivo liver resection and autologous liver transplantation (ELRA) for end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis is gradually increasing, while postoperative psychological disorders in these patients remain underrecognized. We prespecified that longer pre-transplant waiting time, postoperative complications, and higher transfusion volume would be associated with worse anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance at 1 month after ELRA. MATERIAL AND METHODS This single-center retrospective study enrolled 138 patients who underwent ELRA from 2020 to 2025. We collected demogra

Hepatic echinococcosis is a rare parasitic disease, with the incidence of the alveolar form increasing in Central Europe in recent years. Cystic and alveolar echinococcosis differ substantially in their biological behavior and management. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the current literature and to present the experience from a tertiary center with the surgical treatment of this disease. The study combines a review from the literature with a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent surgical treatment at the University Hospital Hradec Králové between January 2022 and

Cystic echinococcosis is an endemic parasitic disease in Morocco, characterized by cystic lesions, most commonly in the liver or lungs, with lesions in other locations being less common. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman presenting with chronic pain and swelling in her left thigh. An ultrasound of the thigh revealed a multilocular mass located on the posteromedial aspect of the thigh. An MRI of the left thigh showed a multilocular subfascial cystic mass containing multiple fluid-filled vesicles and a sinuous hypointense membrane (serpent sign). An MRI of the thoracolumbar spine and an

BACKGROUND: Serum Raman spectroscopy provides label-free molecular fingerprints for bioanalytical screening, but conventional models often rely on a single preprocessing pipeline. Because preprocessing can alter spectral distributions and attenuate information retained in raw spectra, this study developed a dual-channel fusion strategy for echinococcosis screening.
RESULTS: We analyzed 573 serum samples from hepatic echinococcosis (HE), liver cirrhosis (LC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and normal controls (NC); 458 formed the development set and 115 were reserved for held-out testing. We

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic liver disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus (E.g) infection, characterized by hepatic fibrosis and liver necrosis. Ghrelin and its receptor GHSR have been proven to regulate the progression of hepatic E.g infection, and GHSR knockout inhibits infection progression. Nevertheless, the specific regulatory mechanism remains poorly understood.
METHODS: In this study, mice with hepatic E.g infection were intraperitoneally injected with ghrelin protein and the GHSR antagonist [D-Lys3]-GHRP-6 for 90 days, and the related molecular and pathol

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus that most commonly affects the liver and lungs. In disseminated disease, the combination of bilateral pulmonary nodules, cavitary consolidation, mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and hepatic lesions can closely mimic metastatic malignancy on cross-sectional imaging and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT). This case highlights disseminated CE mimicking pulmonary embolism (PE) and metastatic malignancy. This is a case of a previously healthy 27-year-old woman w

BACKGROUND: While socioeconomic status (SES) indicators such as educational attainment and employment are among the major drivers of health and illness, the health returns of SES indicators may differ across racial groups. Built on Marginalization related Diminished Returns framework (MDRs) that refers to weaker health effects of SES indicators for marginalized and minoritized groups than non-Hispanic White people, we conducted this study with two aims: First to test the association between educational attainment and employment with cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), and second, to test racial v

Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, most commonly affects the liver and lungs. Involvement of the head and neck region, particularly the parapharyngeal space, is extremely rare and poses a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl from an endemic area who presented with a painless, rapidly enlarging mass in the right parapharyngeal space, developing over 6 months. Clinical examination revealed a firm, non-tender, transilluminant swelling with intraoral bulging. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined cystic lesion in the right parapharyngeal space.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of gastrointestinal tract cancers (GICs)-specifically liver cancer (LC), colorectal cancer (CRC), gallbladder and biliary tract cancers (GBTCs), and pancreatic cancer (PC)-attributable to high body mass index (BMI) is of increasing concern, especially among middle-aged and elderly populations.
METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 1990-2021, we assessed deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR), and estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) for LC, GBTCs, CRC, and PC attributable to high B

Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, commonly affects the liver and can lead to complications such as rupture, secondary infection, and anaphylaxis. While surgery is the traditional treatment for complicated cases, minimally invasive techniques are emerging as viable alternatives. We report a case of a 27-year-old female with a history of gastritis and a pancreatic cyst who presented with acute diffuse abdominal pain and nausea. Imaging revealed an 11.8×8.8×5.2 cm cystic structure in the left hepatic lobe, consistent with a hydatid cyst, with free intraperitoneal fluid concernin

(1) Background: Echinococcosis is a significant zoonotic disease that the World Health Organization (WHO) aims to eliminate by 2050. Current drug-based control faces challenges such as drug resistance, highlighting the urgent need to develop vaccines as a supplementary strategy. Although some progress has been made in the study of intermediate host vaccines using antigens such as Eg95, there is still no commercial vaccine available for the definitive host, canines-which are crucial for transmission-and it is not yet suitable for large-scale use. While vaccine studies targeting the key enzyme l

Growing evidence suggests a role for the gut microbiome in progression of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), however, its diagnostic and therapeutic potential remains incompletely characterized. Here, metagenomic sequencing was performed on fecal samples (n = 785) from individuals across East, Central, and Northwestern China. Gut microbial dysbiosis in CCA was characterized by depletion of short-chain fatty acids-producing species and enrichment of potential pathobionts (Klebsiella aerogenes, Clostridium symbiosum). Diagnostic models built using species-level markers demonstrated superior performance,
