Open surgical management of pediatric hepatic hydatid cysts: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, remains a major public health concern in endemic regions such as Iran. The liver is the most affected organ in children, and surgical intervention is often required due to the risk of complications and recurrence. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of open surgical treatment for hepatic hydatid cysts in pediatric patients managed at two tertiary pediatric hospitals. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 102 children who underwent open surgery between 2017 and 2024. Data were retrospectively collec

Polarization of Hepatic Macrophages in Alveolar Echinococcosis and Its Role in Remodeling the Immune Microenvironment.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by Echinococcus multilocularis larvae, is a severe zoonotic disease mimicking tumors, primarily affecting the liver with high mortality if untreated. Host immunity plays a pivotal role, shifting from Th1/Th17-mediated clearance to Th2/Treg-driven tolerance, enabling parasite survival. Liver macrophages, including Kupffer cells, polarize towards M2 phenotype under parasite antigens (e.g., phytic acid, exosomes), promoting immunosuppression, fibrosis, and T cell exhaustion via IL-10/TGF-β. This reshapes the tumor-like immune microenvironment with M2 macrophag

Locally Aggressive Hepatic Echinococcosis With Colonic Involvement Requiring a Right Hemicolectomy: A Case Report and Focused Literature Review.

Echinococcosis most commonly presents as a slowly enlarging hepatic cyst, whereas extensive inflammatory extension with colonic involvement is uncommon. We report the case of an 80-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and fever and reported having been aware of a hepatic echinococcal cyst for approximately 30 years. CT showed a giant calcified hepatic cyst containing an air-fluid level and intralesional gas, suggestive of secondary infection; intraoperative cyst-fluid culture subsequently grew Escherichia coli. Emergency laparotomy revealed dense inflammatory adherence to the transve

Occurrence and Determinants of Periprosthetic Fractures of the Femur During Intraoperative and Post-operative Period in Patients Undergoing Hip Arthroplasty: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Stachybotrys chartarum is a damp building mould and a potent toxin producer that has been related to serious cases of respiratory health problems. However, the direct link between exposure and health symptoms has not been established. OBJECTIVE: To examine the mechanism by which exposure to spores of satratoxin producing and non-producing S. chartarum strains induce inflammatory responses in murine lungs. METHODS: BALB/c mice were intranasally exposed for 3 weeks to spores of a satratoxin-producing and a non-producing S. chartarum strain. Inflammatory cell infiltration was charac

Minimally invasive versus open liver resection for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis within a disease-control oriented surgical strategy: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The surgical strategy for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) differs from that for typical malignant tumors, as treatment is not solely determined by the feasibility of complete (R0) resection. While complete resection remains the preferred goal, cytoreductive surgery combined with albendazole therapy is considered in selected cases. The role of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) within this disease-control oriented strategy remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 126 patients who underwent liver resection for hepatic AE between January 2010 and March 2026: 87 underw

An atypical case of bilateral pulmonary hydatid cyst with endo-rupture managed with two-stages uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in Palestine: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis is a helminthic infection caused by cestodes of the genus Echinococcus (e.g., E. granulosus, E. multilocularis). Infection is typically acquired by accidental ingestion of Echinococcus eggs, which are shed in the feces of infected dogs. Infection results in cystic lesions in the liver (75% of cases), lungs (15% of cases) and, rarely, other organs. CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a case of a bilateral pulmonary hydatid cyst in a 19-year-old female with endo-rupture of the cyst in the right upper lobe. The patient presented with a history of longstanding dry cough

Hydatid Cyst of the Right Atrium With Hepatic and Pulmonary Involvement and Concomitant Pulmonary Embolism, Presenting With Massive Haemoptysis: A Case Report.

Hydatid cyst disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affects the liver and lungs, while cardiac involvement, especially the right atrium (RA), is extremely rare. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman who presented with massive haemoptysis and hypoxemia. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a large multicystic mass occupying the RA cavity, adherent to the atrial wall and interatrial septum, strongly suggestive of a hydatid cyst. Chest computed tomography angiography confirmed multiple pulmonary cystic lesions, intravascular filling defects consistent with pulmonary embo

Quantitative Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Characterization of Perilesional Perfusion and Its Association with CD34-Positive Cell Density in a Rat Model of Hepatic Alveolar Echinococcosis.

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) is characterized by infiltrative growth and remodeling of perilesional host tissue, including microvascular changes. We investigated whether quantitative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) could characterize perilesional perfusion and its animal-level association with CD34-positive cell density in a standardized rat model. Twenty female Sprague Dawley rats underwent ultrasound-guided intrahepatic HAE modeling and CEUS 10 weeks later. Peak enhancement (PE), rise time (RT), time to peak (TTP), wash-in rate (WiR), wash-in perfusion index (WiPI), and wash-in

Untargeted LC-MS metabolomics reveals source-dependent metabolic remodeling of Caco-2 cells exposed to bovine hydatid cyst fluid.

Hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) is a biochemically complex parasite-derived mixture whose effects on host and cancer cells are highly context dependent. The aim of this study was to determine whether short-term exposure to bovine liver- or lung-derived HCF alters Caco-2 XTT-based viability/metabolic activity and to characterize the associated global metabolic changes using untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Caco-2 cells were exposed to HCF at 20-60 μg/mL for 24 h for XTT analysis, and 40 μg/mL was selected for untargeted LC-MS metabolomics. XTT-based viability/metabolic activ

Rare anatomical localizations of hydatid cysts (2020-2025): Narrative review of presentation, imaging, and management.

Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically affects the liver and lungs. However, cyst development in rare anatomical sites presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We conducted a narrative review using a structured search of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar (first 200 records), with predefined eligibility criteria and dual-reviewer screening where applicable. Findings were synthesized narratively; numeric summaries reflect reporting frequency among included case-level reports rather than prevalence or comparative effectiveness. Seventeen studies (case reports

Hydatid Disease Masquerading as Infected Non-Union of Subtrochanteric Femur: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Infected non-union of the subtrochanteric femur is commonly attributed to bacterial infection and mechanical instability; however, rare etiologies may mimic this presentation and delay appropriate management. Hydatid disease involving bone is an uncommon manifestation and is often overlooked due to its non-specific clinical and radiological features. Reports of intraosseous hydatid cyst presenting as infected non-union are exceedingly rare, making this case clinically significant. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old female of Indian origin presented with pain, inability to bear weight, a

Exploring cheminformatics tools to combat prostate cancer: diagnostics, therapeutics, and mechanistic studies.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke leaves many people with upper limb impairments which significantly affect function and Quality Of Life (QOL). Most studies report outcomes at the impairment and activity level. Less attention has been paid to real-life use of the affected upper limb in daily activities. Self-reported measures of performance of activity in daily life using the affected upper limb is important to obtain as people may have minimal deficits on impairment and activity level outcomes yet still have significant difficulties performing self-care and other Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). These d

Clinical Characteristics, Management, and Outcomes of Intracranial Hydatid Cysts in Pakistan: A Narrative Synthesis.

A hydatid cyst is caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It is transmitted to humans via the feco-oral route. It occurs mostly in the liver or lungs. Intracranial occurrence is a very infrequent phenomenon. This review aimed to provide an insight into the clinicopathological spectrum of primary intracranial hydatid cyst and its management in Pakistani patients. Databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) and national journals were searched using predefined keywords from their inception until October 31, 2025. All case reports (CR), case series (CS), and original articles that satisfied the inclusion and

Simultaneous surgical treatment of multiple abdominal echinococcosis and benign pelvic organ tumours: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis of the liver is a parasitic infection that poses a significant healthcare challenge in endemic regions. The majority of cases present with either no clinical signs or non-specific ones, making differential diagnosis difficult until after the operation. Preoperative diagnostics rely mainly on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. The usual treatment for liver echinococcosis involves an operation, such as percutaneous intervention, surgical resection of the cyst as well as surrounding liver tissue, or major liver resection, followed by prolon
